Baking soda bottled in Germany allows for short delivery routes and thus protects the environment. Shelf life

What is baking soda?

The chemical formula for baking soda is NaHCO3. It is a salt whose healing properties have been known since early antiquity. In nature, the mineral occurs in isolated deposits – mainly in the USA. In Europe, it is obtained from natural table salt by exchanging chlorine for carbonate in the Solvay process. In addition, dissolved sodium bicarbonate is contained in many mineral waters and medicinal springs. Sodium bicarbonate binds and neutralises all acids and converts them into neutral salts and effervescent carbonic acid. It also has a mildly alkaline effect.

What is the difference between baking soda, baking powder and soda?

Telling soda, baking soda and baking powder apart is made difficult by the numerous names under which they can be found. Especially when baking according to English-language recipes, confusion often sets in. Here you will find baking soda under the title baking soda – not to be confused with baking powder, which is more common in Germany.

Although baking soda is contained in baking powder, you should not substitute the two products one for one. In addition to baking soda, baking powder also contains acid. Only the combination of baking soda, acid and heat leads to a reaction in the dough, which loosens it up with gas bubbles. So you can only use baking soda in recipes that contain acidic ingredients such as yoghurt, buttermilk, sour cream and the like. If these are missing, baking powder is used.

Pure soda (Na₂CO₃), on the other hand, is also known as washing soda, crystal soda or sodium carbonate. Both soda and soda ash are used for household cleaners. However, soda works better especially for heavy soiling. However, it is not suitable for consumption.

What are the side effects of sodium bicarbonate?

The following side effects can occur with an overdose of sodium bicarbonate:

Does baking soda also work for pets?

Natron is one of the home remedies that can help not only yourself but also your four-legged friend. The powder can also be used to treat stomach complaints in dogs and cats. Simply add a pinch of sodium hydrogen carbonate (E500ii) to the food or, one hour after feeding, dissolve it in water and squeeze it directly into the mouth using a syringe. As with humans, sodium bicarbonate is not a permanent solution for quadrupeds. If symptoms persist, a vet should be consulted.
