The Best Weed Sprayer: Our Choices
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a weed sprayer
Why do I need a weed sprayer?
A pressure sprayer helps you spread liquids, such as weed killer. It can be used to get rid of unwanted plant guests in your garden. But you can also use the device for maintenance by filling it with care products or fertiliser.
However, you should never use the same device for weeding and plant protection. Residues can always remain in the tank.
How does a weed sprayer work?
If you have a mechanical pump sprayer, you create pressure with the help of an air pump; electric devices do the pumping for you. Then all you have to do is pull the lever and spray the liquid evenly onto the plants.
Be sure to wear protective clothing, at least gloves and a mouth guard, so that your skin is not attacked by the potentially acidic agent. Read the instructions on the package carefully before using the sprayer.
How and with what do I fill a weed sprayer?
Discharge the remaining pressure from the bottle, open the unit and pour in the liquid in the correct ratio. Use a funnel if one is not already installed and you want to make sure that nothing goes wrong.
You can tell when it is time to refill by the level indicated in a visual strip. Be sure to know exactly which products you are using to kill or care for your plants. Some chemical products are legally permitted, but pose great risks to the environment and health.
How much does a weed sprayer cost?
The following table shows you the average prices depending on size and type of drive:
|1 – 3 litres||Mechanical||10 – 20 €|
|1 – 3 litres||Electrical||15 – 20 €|
|3 – 10 litres||Mechanical||15 – 25 €|
|3 – 10 litres||Electrical||40 – 60 €|
|10 – 30 litres||Mechanical||25 – 80 €|
|10 – 30 litres||Electrical||100 – 300 €|
Add to this the cost of the contents you want, for example weedkiller and others, depending on whether you want to buy accessories.
What accessories do I need?
A pressure sprayer can be combined with various accessories. Depending on the brand, you can connect a compressor or a cordless electric pump, which eliminates the need for mechanical pumping.
For small devices you can get a compressor valve for around 12 €, large connections cost between 60 and 70 €. With the right valve, some models can be operated with the help of a bicycle pump.
For more precise spraying, you can get a spray shield attached to a nozzle. This ensures that you do not spray over the desired area. These are available in stores for 8 – 30 €, depending on the manufacturer and model.
Compressor valve, screen and other features are optional. What you need in any case is the product you want to spray. Unless you have bought a ready-mixed spray bottle, this is not included with the unit.
Depending on what kind of liquids you use, you should buy a cleaning agent for your sprayer. This will ensure that no acidic residues remain in the tank and attack the material. A cleaning agent costs on average about 10 – 15 €.
What alternatives are there to a weed sprayer?
Hot water is a household remedy against weeds. Spread it over the pests with the help of a garden hose and then simply pluck them out of the ground. You can also use a pressurised spray bottle, but check beforehand whether the material can withstand the high temperature.
You can also sprinkle a small amount of table salt on the weeds. This attacks the greenery directly at the root. Just be careful that the spice doesn’t get on the plants you love next to it.
You can also buy spray bottles filled with a ready-mixed weedkiller. All you have to do is spread it around your garden and the job is done.
Decision: What types of weed sprayers are there and which is the right one for you?
What are the features of an electric air sprayer and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
Electric devices are powered by batteries or rechargeable batteries that automatically generate the necessary pressure. An electric weed sprayer does the pumping for you, which saves you a lot of energy.
You also don’t have to interrupt your gardening work because of constant pumping. This also saves time.
However, batteries and rechargeable battery often have to be bought separately. Such a device is also more expensive. Whereas for small compressed-air sprayers the price between mechanical pumps and battery-powered ones does not make much difference.
For small gardens, the purchase of an electric drive is often not worthwhile. It is more common with devices from 16 – 20 litres.
What distinguishes a mechanical pressure sprayer and what are the advantages and disadvantages?
You can get a mechanical device at a very low price. Without having to worry about full batteries, you can do your gardening quickly and easily at any time.
Without an electric drive, you may have to stop again and again to pump when the pressure drops. This also involves a certain amount of effort.
You can combine many mechanical devices with an electric drive. With the help of a compressor attachment, for example, you can reduce the amount of power required because you no longer have to pump yourself with this mechanical device.
Purchase criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate weed sprayers
In the following we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate weed sprayers. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular weed sprayer is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:
- Pressure / pressure build-up
- Handling and weight
Pressure / pressure build-up
Pressure is measured in bar. It is necessary to spray the agent in the bottle through the nozzle. The higher the pressure, the stronger the jet. For most devices, the value is 3 to 5 bar. Smaller spray bottles have 1.5 bar. Depending on the size, the device should have at least 3 bar so that a certain spraying power is assumed.
You should also pay attention to how much force is needed for how much work. With many tools, a few pump strokes are enough to build up enough pressure. If you have to interrupt your gardening every two minutes and pump again, you will need longer.
Depending on the size of your garden and the number of pests, you will need a device with more or less capacity. To get an idea of how many litres should fit in your pump sprayer, check out the table below:
|Application area||filling quantity|
|Small garden 10 – 40 m² or balcony||0.5 – 1.5 litres|
|Home garden up to 200 m²||3 – 10 litres|
|Large garden with tall trees / shrubs||5 – 10 litres|
|Large areas and long verges||12 – 18 litres|
Handling and weight
You can hold a small spray bottle with one hand. Make sure it fits comfortably in your hand even when wearing gloves. Medium-sized sprayers should come with a strap so you can carry the sprayer on one shoulder. This makes it easy to carry and leaves your hands free for work.
Large high-pressure sprayers have straps so that the sprayer can be carried on your back like a backpack.
The heavier the sprayer, the more strenuous the gardening will be. Remember that the weight is stated on the packaging without the contents. So you have to add the liquid. It is best to use the amount of liquid to estimate how heavy the final product will be to carry.
It is best to buy a device with adjustable nozzles. Depending on the intended use, it is important whether you can spray a product in an even mist or a direct jet. The nozzle of most pressure sprayers is adjustable in steps.
This part should be replaceable so that you can change it if something breaks. It is also more practical for cleaning. Brass is better than plastic because it is more robust.
Interesting facts about weed sprayers
Is killing weeds biologically safe?
That depends on the product of your choice. Of course, it is best to use a biocompatible weed killer. In general, only products that are safe for humans and animals are allowed for private use. It is important that the environment can decompose the weed killer without harm.
It is best to look for “organic” on the bottle to make sure that the product is not harmful to the environment.
Fertiliser is often mixed with herbicides, an acidic substance that kills plants. In principle, chemical agents are not allowed in one’s own garden, only if there are horticultural or agricultural purposes behind them.
Even approved products are not always free of dangerous pollutants. Find out beforehand which substances could harm you and your environment.
Where can I spray weeds?
Especially when using chemical liquids, there are a few things to be aware of: Application near groundwater sources is not allowed. Even if there is no possibility for water to run off, e.g. on asphalt, the use is against the law and can be expensive.
As long as you keep to your own property and keep your hands off sealed surfaces, you can also put a stop to rampant greenery with chemical products. However, only if you use your garden for agricultural, forestry or horticultural purposes.
A lawn area may not be sprayed with a chemical agent, regardless of whether it is approved or not. Chemical-free plant fertiliser or alternative killers such as vinegar, salt, hot water or similar, may of course be used everywhere without hesitation.
How do you clean a weed sprayer?
If you have used an environmentally friendly product, you can simply rinse the sprayer with warm water and pour it down the drain. You automatically clean the nozzle and hose by spraying out the wash water.
You can also clean your appliance with a special cleaning agent. This is especially recommended if you have used chemical weed killers. Do not simply pour such liquids down the sink. Instead, you should collect them and take them to a collection point for pollutants so that they can be disposed of correctly.
Make sure that you always use the same product for a sprayer. Residues can always remain. So never use pesticides and exterminators in the same sprayer.
When is the best time to spray weeds?
Depending on the plant and its growth, the best time to fertilise and kill varies. After all, you don’t want to destroy the valuable greenery with it. In the first year, after you have sown new lawn or flowers, it is better not to use any products, as the plants are not yet resistant enough to herbicides and you would simply destroy them.
You should refrain from mowing the lawn a few days before and after applying a weedkiller. If there is very little rain, many products cannot fully develop their effect. Watering the weeds is then necessary or you have to add certain liquids.
You should take care of your lawn on a dry day, so that the products you use are not washed away without having had a chance to take effect. Make sure that even when it is windy, no weedkiller gets into places where it does not belong.
|Plant||Difficulty||Flowering time||Time of application|
|Daisy||Easy||Until end of November||During flowering|
|Groundsel||Heavy||March to July||If at least 4 leaves are present|
|White clover||Medium||May to September||Sufficient root system and soil moisture must be present|
|Plantain||Easy||June to October||If at least 4 leaves are present|
|Dandelion||Easy||April to June||If at least 4 leaves are present|
All weeds are not created equal. Some plants are classified differently from hobby gardener to hobby gardener. Nevertheless, we would like to show you the most common weeds in the lawn and how easy they are to get rid of (or not).
Can I hire a weed sprayer?
Sprayers, as well as other tools, can be rented in many DIY stores. You can also find garden sprayers for hire on many sites, e.g. mietmeile.de, mietguide.de or on eBay Kleinanzeigen. However, find out about rental prices beforehand so that you don’t end up paying more than if you bought a sprayer. Prices range from €6 to €30 per day.
Can I get spare parts for my weed sprayer?
Depending on the manufacturer, you can buy parts separately. Replaceable parts of a weed sprayer are:
- Spray lance
- Seals / Sealing rings
The more you can disassemble and reassemble, the more parts you can replace. So when buying, make sure that you can assemble as much of the pressure sprayer as possible yourself.
Firstly, the product is then easier to clean and secondly, you do not have to buy a new machine if weak points occur. It is best to check with the same dealer where you bought the machine. This way you can be sure that everything fits together.
