  • Not every glass is dishwasher safe. Thin glasses may break in your dishwasher. The high temperatures themselves can cause your glass to become cloudy. Especially high-quality glasses with prints or finishes should be cleaned by hand.
  • The material has a great influence on the stability and durability of your glass. If you are looking for a glass for children, materials such as plastic or wood are suitable because they are very robust. Glass drinking glasses or even crystal glasses are not suitable for children.
  • You will find a suitable set for your household in every price range. Designs, engravings and decorations are already available in the middle price range of glasses. Self-blown and handmade glasses and real crystals are the highest quality productions.

The Best Water Glass: Our Picks

Water Glass: Buying and evaluation criteria

To make it easier for you to buy your water glass, we have summarised some criteria for you. With the help of the following points, you can quickly compare the different products and make the best decision. The most important features you should consider when buying are:

Ease of cleaning

Not every drinking glass can be washed in the dishwasher without any problems. It is advisable to wash crystal glasses by hand. If you expose them to too much heat, the glass will become milky and cloudy. There are several tricks you can use to make the glass shine again.

Other materials are not heat-resistant either, so make sure your glass is break-resistant. Heat can cause small changes in the structure of your glass. Although these small cracks will not cause it to break, they will make the glass wall appear dull. Glasses with finishes such as gold rims or printed images also require extra care when cleaning.

Glasses with a high proportion of calcium oxide have a high degree of hardness and are therefore more stable and longer lasting. However, you don’t often find out the exact composition of your drinking glass. However, if you buy homemade glasses from a blowing shop, it is worth paying attention to this.

The shelf life of your glass also depends on how well it is cared for.

Pay attention to the factors described above to increase the longevity of your glass. If you are looking for a glass that is also suitable for children, a cup made of plastic or wood is recommended. These materials do not break easily and are less dangerous than glass when broken.

As already mentioned, the material of your glass plays a big role in your purchase decision. Glasses are made from a variety of materials, the best known being:

  • Glass
  • Plastic / synthetic
  • Wood / Bamboo
  • Stainless steel

Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Plastic glasses last a long time, but are harmful to the environment. Bamboo glasses break down better, depending on the processing, but can also become brittle. Stainless steel glasses last a long time, but can leave an unpleasant aftertaste.

Special features in design

Before you buy a glass set, it is important to know what you value. The volume of your glass also plays a major role here. The average for a normal water glass is between 0.2 and 0.3 litres. However, you can also find other glasses that have more or less volume, depending on your needs.

If you are planning to give the glasses as a gift, you can have a personalised engraving added to the glass. If you’re looking for something more festive instead, we recommend glasses with a stem and foot to make them stand out. Grooves in the glass or other decorations such as imprints or gold finishing can also be eye-catching.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about water glasses answered in detail

In the following section, we will answer the most important questions. After you have read through the next sections, you will be perfectly prepared for your purchase.

Who are water glasses suitable for?

A simple water glass like the ones you find in every shop is suitable for everyone. It’s the specifics of the different water glasses that make the difference. If you are looking for something simple and everyday, a simple water glass is best for you.

There are many types of glasses that are better or worse suited for different situations. Especially families with children need to be careful about which glass they choose to ensure the safety of their child. (Image source: serezniy / 123RF)

For families with small children, robust and less high-quality finishes are the best choice. Materials like wood or plastic will stand up to toddlers and rowdies. However, if you’re looking for something special to impress your guests at the next dinner party, consider a set of crystal glasses. Noble gilding of the rims, or fine engravings in the glass provide an extra kick.

What types of water glasses are there?

There are no limits to the shapes and colours of glasses. You can get oval, bulbous, cylindrical or long water glasses, depending on your preference. However, there are other types of glasses that serve different purposes. In the following table, we have listed the most important ones for you:

Type of glass Purpose
Crystal glass A fine set for special occasions and dinner parties.
Small glasses (40 to 60 ml) Small glasses are suitable for adding water to a strong espresso.
Robust glasses A glass for everyone, but especially practical for families with small children.

There is a glass for every occasion. As long as you know what factors you personally value, there’s nothing standing in the way of your purchase.

How are water glasses made?

The production of the glass varies depending on the material. If we take the normal water glass as a starting point, it is usually soda-lime glass and the production process is (simplified) as follows:

  1. Composition of the glass mixture: In the industrial mass production of glasses, quartz sand and waste glass are also often added to the mixture. Each manufacturer has its own compositions to produce the best glass. It influences factors such as durability.
  2. Heating the glass: The mixture is then heated to about 1,500 degrees Celsius until it liquefies. Raw materials that are to colour the glass are added in this step.
  3. The shaping: Depending on the production process, the liquid raw glass is portioned into tropes and then shaped either by machine or by hand during the cooling process.
  4. The cooling: Now the glass has to cool down. This process should take place slowly so that the end product does not become brittle or cracked. In industrial production, so-called cooling tracks are used.
  5. Finishing: Surface finishes are added at the end of production.

The course of production varies depending on the type of glass and the manufacturer. Crystal glass, for example, is produced differently.

How much do water glasses cost?

As many differences as there are between glasses, there are also differences in price. There can be big differences here depending on production and material.

Price range Available products
Low-priced (5 to 20 €) Industrially produced water glasses. Mostly unadorned and available in sets. Glasses made of plastic and wood are also in this price range.
Medium-priced (20 to 50 €) Sets with engravings and other designs in the glass. Low-quality crystal glasses can also be found in this price range.
High-priced (from 50 €) individual glasses made of real crystal, possibly with decorations made of gold or other precious metals. Homemade glasses from glassblowers also fall into this price category.

The more you want to spend on your glass set, the higher the quality of the products you can get. But good water glasses that are useful for everyday use are already available on the market for little money. So every buyer can find something suitable here.

A water glass can be more than you might expect. It is a must for every household and you should own at least one set. There is a glass for every need, even if you are just looking for something simple for everyday use.

But even with water glasses, there is no end to the imagination. No matter how ornate, classy or colourful you want it to be, we hope you will find the right glass in dozens of shapes with the help of this guide.
