The Best Waffle Iron: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a waffle iron

What occasions is a waffle iron for?

The waffle iron makes delicious sandwiches, waffles, crepes and other desserts quickly and easily. In general, you don’t need a special occasion to eat delicious waffles with family or friends.

To prepare a romantic dinner for two, however, a waffle iron is a useful aid. A waffle iron that prepares waffles in the shape of a heart is particularly nice for this occasion. (Source: / efraimstochter)

Can a waffle iron be used together with children?

With the right waffle iron, you can easily bake delicious waffles together with the children. Younger children, for example, can help mix the batter for the waffles and do some minor prep work. Older children over the age of six can help with the baking process and operate the waffle iron themselves.

However, when baking with the children, you should use a waffle iron with a heat-resistant housing and place the appliance on a stable surface so that the children do not injure themselves.

Decision: What types of waffle irons are there and which is the right one for you ?

Basically, you can distinguish between five different types of waffle irons:

  • Belgian waffle iron
  • Brussels waffle iron
  • Double waffle iron
  • Liège waffle iron
  • Waffle iron for heart-shaped waffles

What is a Belgian waffle iron and what are the advantages and disadvantages of a Belgian waffle iron?

Belgian waffle irons are available as an electric version, as well as for the induction cooker or as an electric-free coated pan version that works with an open fire. A Belgian waffle iron can be used to make the typical square, thick waffles.

  • Space-saving waffle iron
  • Cut and scratch-resistant
  • Large quantity of waffles can be prepared in successionL
  • Dough can overflow
  • No stable housing
  • Greater risk of burns

What is a Brussels waffle iron and what are the advantages and disadvantages of a Brussels waffle iron?

Brussels waffle irons come in different shapes and designs. They all have one thing in common: they prepare the delicious square and thick Brussels waffles made of sponge batter that you surely know from the funfair or the Christmas market. Most Brussels waffle irons come with a sturdy housing and two to four waffle moulds.

  • Quick preparation
  • Heat-resistant housing
  • Space-saving appliance
  • Removable heating plates
  • Suitable for baking with children
  • Material is difficult to clean if not non-stick

What is a double waffle iron and what are the advantages and disadvantages of double waffle irons?

According to their name, double waffle irons are robust automatic waffle makers that produce two or more waffles at the same time.

  • Ideal for large events and for making many waffles at once
  • Shorter working time
  • Bake up to four waffles at the same time
  • High wattage
  • Also recommended for catering establishments
  • If the heating plate is defective, the whole appliance is defective
  • High power consumption

What is a Liege waffle iron and what are the advantages and disadvantages of Liege waffle irons?

A waffle iron for making Liège waffles with a buttery-sweet yeast batter is hardly any different from a Brussels waffle iron. They often come with a rotating baking unit and a drip tray that collects the excess batter.

  • With drip tray that collects the unused batter
  • batter does not overflow
  • Rotating rotary motion distributes the batter optimally on the baking mould
  • Waffles become crispy and brown on all sides due to rotating baking unit
  • High power consumption
  • Cannot be operated by children
  • Risk of burns due to conductive housing

What is a heart-shaped waffle maker and what are the advantages and disadvantages of heart-shaped waffle makers?

Automatic waffle makers are devices that are operated with electricity and heat the batter that is filled into them. They make the typical heart-shaped waffles.

  • Can be used in any place with access to electricity
  • Easy to use
  • Quick to prepare
  • Suitable for baking with children
  • Allow you to bake individual waffles with sweet or savoury flavours
  • Not for travelling as they need electricity
  • Heavy and time-consuming cleaning

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and rate waffle irons

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate waffle irons. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular waffle iron is suitable for you or not.

In summary, these are:

  • Shape
  • Coating
  • Temperature and baking time
  • Power (wattage)
  • Weight
  • Housing

Not every waffle iron can also make the same types of waffles. For example, while many automatic waffle makers bake thin and heart-shaped waffles, rotary waffle irons mainly make the popular Belgian waffles.

  • If you want to bake thin and heart-shaped waffles quickly and easily, you should go for a waffle maker with heart-shaped plates. It’s easy to plug in and your waffles will be ready in minutes.
  • If you want to make Belgian waffles for the whole family, you’ll need a Belgian waffle iron with a high wattage. This will allow you to make the typical thick, firm square waffles that you can buy at the Christmas market, for example.

A good coating on your waffle iron will save you a lot of work in the long run. This is because a poorly sealed waffle iron makes it difficult to clean the appliance afterwards and, in the worst case, impairs the taste component. Thanks to a non-stick coating, the batter does not stick to the appliance during baking. This means that no dough residue remains at the end.

Temperature regulation

Waffle irons come with different settings. Depending on the type of waffle iron, the waffles are either light golden, crispy brown or dark. To set the temperature, each waffle iron comes with some kind of temperature control. With some waffle irons, the temperature control can be moved, with others it can be turned.

A waffle iron with a clear temperature control that divides the possible browning levels into numbers or words is more practical to start with than a waffle iron with an unlabelled temperature control. Thanks to a labelled temperature control, you can better estimate the desired browning level.

If you want to extend the baking time individually, you should not use an infinitely adjustable waffle iron. These appliances, which only have one temperature setting, are generally of inferior quality.

The higher the wattage of the waffle iron, the faster it can make waffles and the browner the waffles will look in the end. The wattage of a good waffle iron is at least 800 watts.

Only when this temperature is reached will the inside of the waffle, which has been placed or poured with batter, become crispy and brown. From a wattage of more than 1000, you can also use your waffle iron to bake muffins, donuts and other sweets with thick batter. (Source: / Bozic A.)

One disadvantage of the more powerful wattage is the massive power consumption. If you bake waffles occasionally, you don’t necessarily need a waffle iron with powerful 1500 or 2000 watts.

Weight is another important criterion when buying a waffle iron.

Category Advantages Disadvantages
Lightweight waffle irons A lightweight waffle iron is often either an automatic waffle maker or a hinged rotary iron. It is easy to open and store, so it can be taken on the go and stowed in any bag to save space On the one hand, lightweight waffle irons are easy to transport. On the other hand, their baking surface is rather flat, so they usually cannot bake typical thick Belgian waffles.
Heavyweight waffle irons Waffle irons with a heavier own weight are stable and non-slip. Their heavy weight often comes from the massive (removable) plates. You can use them without hesitation in the kitchen at home, but you should place these types of waffle irons on a stable surface Heavyweight waffle irons are not for you if you make waffles with small children. This is because children cannot lift the heavy waffle maker and, in the worst case, bump into the sturdy housing. Furthermore, heavy waffle irons take up a lot of space, which makes them difficult to store in small kitchens and more tedious to transport on the go.

A robust housing is the basic prerequisite for safe baking with a waffle iron.

  • On the one hand, a waffle iron with a metal housing is stable and indestructible, but on the other hand it must be sufficiently insulated. Otherwise, the housing is heat-conductive, which poses a considerable safety risk. A heat-conductive housing heats up during the baking process, which can quickly cause painful burns, especially to careless children.
  • Some automatic waffle makers are encased in a plastic housing, which makes the waffle iron less conductive. This makes waffle makers with plastic housings particularly suitable if you like to bake a lot with the children and want to ensure the greatest possible safety when baking waffles.
  • A waffle iron with a coated stainless steel housing promises the greatest possible safety. On the one hand, a coated stainless steel waffle iron does not rust, so it can be transported and used on the go.
