Summary
- A rim or tyre is a kind of hollow ring made of vulcanised rubber that is resistant to high temperatures and sudden changes in speed. Inside the rim is the wheel rim, which is attached to the car to allow it to move from one journey to another. The tyres are inflated with pressurised air.
- Each car needs a specific model and dimensions, depending on the size of the car and the rim, so it is necessary to check and be sure that the tyre is optimal for your vehicle. Each brand has different models and types of tyres, so there may be differences between brands, but the essence is the same.
- Relevant factors to consider when purchasing new tyres include the size of the rim, the type of car, the surface where you usually use your vehicle, the make and model of the tyre. Buying a tyre based on your taste alone may result in a tyre that is not compatible with your car.
The Best Tyres: Our Picks
With so many different tyres on the market today, it can sometimes be difficult to find the best tyres for your car. That’s why we’ll mention the most popular and best-selling models to help you compare and analyse what customers are looking for when it comes to tyres.
Buying guide: What you need to know about tyres
When thinking about buying tyres, many people have in mind that it is enough to find the model they like the most. However, it is vitally important to keep several criteria in mind, so that when making a decision, the probability of having the right tyres for your car is as high as possible. We will elaborate on them below.
What is a rim and what are its advantages?
The main function of tyres is to facilitate the movement of any vehicle, as well as to complement the aesthetics of your car. Tyres are used not only for automobiles, but also for bicycles, motorbikes, among others.
For car lovers and for those who have 2 or more vehicles, if you have different cars you need wheels of different models, making your choice more difficult. The important thing is to identify the characteristics of each wheel. For car collectors, acquiring a wheel is very important even though they hardly use them.
Radial, conventional, fuel-saving radial, all-season or winter tyres – what should you look out for?
As you can see, all types of tyres are very good, their main difference lies in the surface where you will frequently use them. In the following we will explain each type of tyre in detail.
Radial Tires. They are the most popular and the most used. The layers of rubber are parallel to each other, at a 90-degree angle to the circumference of the rim. Supporting belts are placed over the plies along the periphery of the tyre. These belts may be made of steel.
These tyres are the most common choice, have lower rolling resistance than other tyres and consequently improve fuel efficiency. Because of the way they are manufactured, they provide stability, driving comfort and offer better performance under extreme conditions such as rain or waterlogging.
Conventional tyres. These are mass-produced for compact cars and are the ones that usually come on new cars from the dealer. They are called conventional because they meet minimum quality and safety standards and are therefore the most economical. They are made of rubber through the vulcanisation process.
The part that has contact with the ground, or better known as the tread pattern, is very basic, with straight lines that run the entire length of the tyre. As a side note, the more complex the tread pattern, the better the stability and control the driver has over the car.
Fuel-saving radial tyres. The growth in sales and popularity of this type of tyre has reached unimaginable levels, since independently of the fuel savings, there is a considerable reduction in energy consumption and consequently in the carbon footprint on the environment.
In addition to the technology included in this type of tyre, the tyres are inflated to a higher calibre than common radial tyres. This results in lower rolling resistance and avoids over consumption of fuel.
All-season tyres. These tyres are designed for areas where seasonal changes are very drastic, as the weather ranges from extreme heat to heavy rain, ending with snowfalls below -10 degrees C. They have technology that allows for adaptability to any climate change.
They provide precise, stable driving and allow maximum grip. They can withstand high temperatures and speeds, are ideal for motorways and offer outstanding performance on dry and wet surfaces. So they are perfect for speed and adventure enthusiasts.
Winter tyres. The greatest benefit of these tyres is maximum traction on icy and snow-covered areas, preventing skidding and providing stability and driving safety. In addition, because of their manufacturing process, these tyres are difficult to puncture.
The biggest impact is that they are not only designed for optimum grip in this type of weather, but also have a special treatment to resist the most extreme frost. The tread patterns of these tyres are highly complex and irregular, resulting in safe driving.

Buying criteria
If you are passionate about cars and like to get the most out of them, the right tyres make an unforgettable first impression. However, buying tyres is also a considerable investment. So we show you the important factors to consider when buying new tyres. These are:
Quality
If you are one of those who do not skimp when thinking about your car, a smart investment is in tyres, as you always look for the best for your vehicle. That’s why it’s important to analyse and compare before you decide. Tyre quality depends on the type of materials and the manufacturing process.
Quality tyres give you benefits such as the ability to replace them in the long term because of their durability, fuel-saving technology, stability, control and better handling, and increased life of wear parts such as brakes and brake linings. Quality can be measured in three ways:
The stiffness of the tyre casing. Whether it is stiffer or less stiff depends on the sportiness of the tyre. The important thing is to have the optimum flexibility to ensure that the carcass does not bend and thus guarantee that the tread surface is always in full contact with the road.
Performance on wet asphalt. The greater the depth of the tread lines, the better their ability to filter water during rolling. It is important to keep in mind that a new tyre with a tread depth of 7 mm takes approximately 50 m to brake the car.
Whereas a tyre with 5 mm tread depth will need more distance to achieve the same braking. The permitted limit is 1.6 mm, requiring about 85 mm to achieve adequate braking, increasing the risk of a collision because of the longer distance needed.
The quality of the raw material used in its manufacture. The quality of the rubber has a direct impact on the grip of the tyre itself. A hard or poor quality rubber offers little resistance when driving, resulting in a superficial grip on the pavement. Therefore, the quality of the rubber is of utmost importance.
Size
When analysing the wide variety of tyres available for sale, you have to make sure which ones are optimal for your car. That’s why you first need to know the size of the rims and what category your vehicle is in, as well as the characteristics of your current rims so that the new ones are the right match.
It is important to understand the size specifications on the sidewall of each tyre. In order to explain in detail we will take 225/55 R17 94H as a reference. These codes are included in all tyres without exception, which explain size, power and speed.
- We will start with the “225”, which is the width of the tyre measured in millimetres, from one end to the other of the surface on which it rolls.
- The number “55” is known as the aspect ratio and expresses as a percentage the relationship between the width of the rim and the height between the tyre and the tread surface. The higher the number, the higher the profile of the tyre.
- The letter “R” means that the carcass of the rim is radially shaped.
- The number “17” is the tyre size in inches and must always, without exception, be equal to the rim size.
- The “94” is the load index, in other words, the maximum weight that each tyre can withstand. This number means that the tyre can carry a maximum of 670 kg.
- The letter “H” shows the speed index, i.e. this letter is the maximum speed the tyre can withstand without endangering the car. The “H” is equivalent to 210 km/h. The letter with the lowest speed is “Q” at 160 km/h, while the letter with the highest speed is “Z”, which is higher than 240 km/h.
Brand
When analyzing the recognized brands of tyres that are on the market, which are often the best income or the most popular, they can offer and guarantee the quality of their products, as well as the materials with which they were made. Most of these brands have certifications that provide you with security.
The brands are evaluated based on aspects such as durability, noise, energy consumption, PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) content, wet road performance, grip, braking distance, handling and speed. As a result of this assessment, they can be certified as having quality products.
The most recognised brands with high safety and quality standards are: Continental, Pirelli, Dunlop, Goodyear and Bridgestone. It is important to know what each one offers, in order to find the right tyres for your car, having the peace of mind that it is undoubtedly a recognized and certified brand.
Delivery Time
There is a great availability of models in shops, however, when buying tyres online it is necessary to keep in mind the delivery time. Most people don’t consider it and after the purchase they have to wait days for them to arrive. So I recommend you to ask how long the tyres will be at your address.
The range of delivery times for tyres is as follows:
15 to 30 days. Radial and conventional wheel models.
From 30 to 45 days. All-season and winter-focused tyres.
Up to 90 days. Fuel-saving radial tyre models.
The delivery time is not only given by the model, but also the size plays an important role. If you are looking for rims between 14 and 18 inches, the delivery time will be within the stated ranges. However, if you are looking for larger wheels, the delivery time is likely to be longer, as they are usually made to order.
