Tumble dryers cost electricity and are not cheap to buy. If you live alone or in a small household and don’t plan to use your dryer too often, we don’t recommend buying a heat pump dryer. This is only worthwhile after about 4 years for a family of 3 or more.

Exhaust air dryers have the big disadvantage that you have to break through a wall or have a window available. The air is discharged to the outside through a hose.

If there are fireplaces in the vicinity, this dryer can create a negative pressure in the rooms, which means that there is a risk of poisoning by exhaust fumes as well as radiation exposure due to the radioactive gas radon that is sucked in from the ground. For this reason, it is important to seek advice from your chimney sweep before purchasing.

What is the energy consumption of a tumble dryer?

To save money, it’s best to get a tumble dryer with an energy efficiency rating of A or higher.

The EU stipulates that tumble dryers must be classified into energy efficiency classes based on their electricity consumption. G is the worst and A the most economical energy efficiency class. Class A is also subdivided by the + symbol, so A+++ is the most efficient and economical energy class.

What capacity should the tumble dryer have?

Never compare the capacity of your washing machine with that of the tumble dryer. Wet laundry is much heavier.

Before buying, you should determine the capacity that suits you best. Basically, the following rule applies: if you have a washing machine that can hold 5 kilograms of laundry, you should make sure you buy a tumble dryer that can hold 7 to 8 kilograms of laundry.

The figures for a washing machine refer to dry laundry. The capacity of a dryer is designed for wet laundry, as this is much heavier.

For single households, a dryer with a capacity of 3 to 5 kilograms is suitable. If you live with two people, it is advisable to buy a dryer with a capacity of 5 to 6 kilograms. For families, a tumble dryer with the largest capacity of 7 to 9 kilograms is suitable.

If the drum is fully loaded, you will also save the most electricity.

How loud are tumble dryers?

You can find the volume on the energy label of your tumble dryer.

If you put your dryer in the basement, you won’t be disturbed by the noise it makes. However, if you plan to put your tumble dryer in the kitchen or bathroom, you should pay attention to the noise level. Modern appliances produce around 65 decibels (dB), which is roughly the noise level of a small group of people. This is often not perceived as annoying. If your dryer produces a noise level of 70 to 80 dB, please put it in your laundry room.

What programmes should a tumble dryer have?

What can I put in a tumble dryer?

We recommend that you first consult the sewn-in label of your garment. If the dryer symbol (circle in a square) is crossed out, do not tumble dry and dry on a drying rack.

If you see one dot in this symbol, this means that you should choose gentle drying at a reduced temperature. If you see two dots, you can dry it without any further settings.

Silk, synthetic materials, textiles made of real wool as well as garments made of synthetic materials, rubber or caoutchouc should not be put in the dryer.

What problems can occur?

Mainly, the laundry does not dry properly. What can be the reason? Most of the time this problem is due to lack of maintenance. We advise you to check the lint filter, the condensate container and the water drain.

One possibility is that the indicator light of the water tank flashes. But it is not full at all. Some models have two water containers . Before the water is pumped into the upper water tank, it is first trapped in a lower tank.

Since there is also lint in the water, over time it clogs the container and becomes a lint sponge. This said lint sponge prevents the water from being pumped out. The tumble dryer does not know which container is clogged.

If the underlying container has been emptied and the light is still flashing, there is a possibility of a broken condensate pump.

If your laundry comes out of the tumble dryer just as wet as it was after washing, the thermostats may no longer be working properly. They become brittle after a while and cannot be heated properly.

If you miss the typical sound of the dryer after starting the programme, the drum is probably no longer turning and the drying process is also much quieter. Try turning the drum. Is it harder or easier to turn than before? If both are true, one of these problems may be present.

It is possible that the drive belt is broken. If, contrary to expectations, the belt is OK but the drum is spinning, it still needs to be replaced. If the belt is very difficult to move or does not move at all, this can be attributed to the tensioner pulley. In rare cases, there is a problem with the motor.

How do I dispose of a tumble dryer?

The easiest way is to have the dryer disposed of by a specialist company. This is best done by the company from which a new appliance is purchased.

Many online shops and electrical retailers offer the disposal of the old appliance as a service. You can usually save money here, as they take care of the removal and disposal at a reasonable price, some even free of charge.

You can also dispose of your tumble dryer yourself. Since a tumble dryer is made of a lot of metal, you can take it to a recycling centre or scrap metal dealer. We would like to draw your attention to the fact that local disposal companies often charge a fee.

A huge advantage of the condensation dryer is that it is not connected to a water or exhaust air system. All you need is a place to put your tumble dryer and a power socket. Et voilà, the drying can begin.

The operation of the condenser dryer is quite simple. A heating unit located inside the tumble dryer heats up the draught in the rotating drum. The now hot air can absorb more moisture and thus remove it from the laundry. The condenser cools this humid air, so the water in the air condenses and is collected in the condenser tank.

How does a condensation dryer with heat pump work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Due to the design of this dryer, also called a heat pump dryer, you can save up to half the electricity compared to a pure condensation dryer.

The process of a heat pump dryer is almost the same as that of a condensation dryer. The small difference lies in the detail, in our case in the heat pump. Here, the heat is extracted from the already heated air with the help of the heat exchanger and fed back into the drying process. Since the heat is reused, there is no need for reheating. This technology can save up to 50 percent energy compared to pure condensation dryers.

How does an exhaust air dryer work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The price of an exhaust air dryer is simply unbeatable, starting at 189 euros. This puts it well ahead of its tumble dryer counterparts in terms of price.

The way this recirculating air dryer works is very simple. The heated air is blown into the drum, which absorbs the moisture and releases it to the outside via the exhaust hose.

It is absolutely necessary to lead this hose outside because of the negative pressure and the resulting danger of poisoning. In most cases, the masonry must be penetrated or a hose is routed to the outside through a window.

The washing process is the same as with a normal washing machine. The functionality is also the same. With a washer-dryer, you have the option of choosing between different programmes, just as if you had a standard washing machine in front of you.

The drying process is the same as with a condensation dryer. Here, cold water is used to condense the moist circulating air.

How does a solar dryer work and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A new type of tumble dryer on the market is the solar dryer. The dryer is connected to the heating system of the line like a radiator.

The solar collectors heat the water in a stratified storage tank, which is used to heat the air in the dryer and then returned to the storage tank. The cold water from the heating system is also drawn from the stratified storage tank, used for condensation in the dryer and then returned to the storage tank.

You should choose a tumble dryer type depending on its design and placement. Both vented and condensing tumble dryers work in a very similar way. In both types, the air inside the tumble dryer is heated. This warm air absorbs the moisture from your laundry.

The exhaust air dryer now blows the air to the outside via a suitable exhaust air system, whereas the condensation dryer cools the air and collects the water in a condensate container.
The exhaust air dryer is also much cheaper to buy than a condensation dryer.

The product dimensions

Please remember that you need at least 60 cm of space in width and 60 cm in depth for a tumble dryer.

Before you buy a tumble dryer, you should of course check that you have enough space for a tumble dryer. The standard dimensions for free-standing tumble dryers are 60 x 60 cm. Despite these standard dimensions, always take into account the dimensions of your product. The standard dimensions are a guideline. Manufacturers’ dimensions usually vary between 58 and 64 cm.

Dryers with a low capacity of 4 kg are usually narrower. The width is about 45 cm. The rare top-loading tumble dryers also have a reduced width.


As already mentioned in the guide, you should pay attention to the drum capacity. To make the right decision for you, use the capacity of your washing machine as a guide. But please be careful not to transfer the capacity 1:1 to your tumble dryer.

The energy efficiency classes range from G to A+++, with G being the worst and A+++ the best, most energy-efficient energy class.

If you compare a tumble dryer with an energy rating of B and a tumble dryer with an energy rating of A+++, you will immediately notice that you can save up to 70% of electricity with the A+++ rating compared to energy rating B.

Condensation efficiency class

The condensation efficiency class indicates how much moisture is released into the air during the drying process. The less moisture that enters the room, the better.

You can also find this class on the energy label of the European Union on your appliance. Here, too, G is the worst and A the best condensation class. This value compares the amount of water before and after drying.

Before drying, the amount of water in the textiles is measured. After the drying process, the measuring process is carried out again with the water that has collected in the condensation tank. The two measured values are compared with each other. If the values are close to each other, only little moisture was released into the air.

If you want to install your tumble dryer in a passive house or in a well-insulated room, we advise you to pay particular attention to the condensation efficiency class. The less moisture that gets into the air, the lower the risk of mould.

Annual energy consumption

This value indicates how many kilowatts of electricity are consumed per hour or per year during fully loaded drying cycles.

Please refer to the exact operating instructions of your tumble dryer. In most cases, this value is only an approximation and a recommendation for average drying cycles. Due to various factors such as load, residual moisture and temperature, this value may vary depending on the running time and consumption.

Again, as described in the guide, load your tumble dryer fully. This saves energy, your wallet and the environment.

Drying time

This value indicates the average drying time of the standard programme with a fully loaded tumble dryer.

As described under energy consumption, this value is also an approximation. Again, please take into account the various circumstances such as load, type of textiles, residual moisture and temperature.


You can find the volume level on the energy label of your appliance. A value of 65 dB is recommended. The lower the value, the quieter the appliance.

Free-standing tumble dryers are usually non-integratable appliances. The surface of these freestanding appliances can be used as a shelf. If it has not been specifically stated by the manufacturer, the lid of this type of appliance cannot be removed. Consequently, you cannot install this appliance under a work surface or anchor it permanently.

If the installation type is specified as under-mountable, the tumble dryer is suitable for under-mounting. Instead of the machine lid, a cover plate is fitted to protect the furniture from moisture and heat. In addition, it is possible to install a cover panel and a plinth.

If you do not have much space in your flat, you can place your tumble dryer on top of your washing machine and fix it there. This feature of your tumble dryer is described as columnable. The stacked appliances make it easy for you to put your laundry in, take it out and move it around.


The basic warranty for tumble dryers is one year. Many manufacturers provide a full warranty for 2 years.

As a customer, you are protected from defects for at least 2 years by the warranty law. You can only make use of this law if your goods were already damaged when you bought them. The warranty obligation must be fulfilled by the dealer, i.e. the seller of the appliance.

The gentle smell of freshly washed laundry often disappears when it is aired in the drum. There is a remedy for this in the form of scented wipes. You can simply put them in the drum with the laundry. During the drying process, the cloth releases its scent.

You can do without fabric softener during the washing process, your dryer will do that for you.

Are there any tips for saving energy?

After spinning at the highest speed, select the appropriate programme and start the dryer with a full load.

The most energy-efficient process is probably drying the laundry in the open air. But this is only recommended in summer. If you dry your laundry indoors, the humidity rises and the temperature drops. There is a risk of mould and heating costs rise.

Spin your clothes at the highest speed before putting them in the dryer. This saves energy and time when drying.

Fill your tumble dryer completely, but don’t overload it! If you only half-fill the drum, energy consumption will increase.

Choose the right programme. It doesn’t always have to be “extra dry”.

It’s enough to dry your laundry at a low temperature. This not only saves you electricity and money, but also protects your textiles and the environment.

How does an ultrasonic dryer work and what are its advantages?

Another modern tumble dryer is the so-called ultrasonic dryer. An ultrasonic dryer was developed in collaboration with researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the US Department of Energy’s Buidling Technologies Office and appliance manufacturer GE Appliances.

In 20 minutes, a complete load of laundry is supposed to be fluffy soft and dry. A huge plus point of this dryer is its low energy consumption. Allegedly, only 30 per cent of energy is needed compared to appliances on the market.

The appliance uses high-frequency vibrations instead of hot air. This high-frequency vibration is created by piezoelectric transducers; they are small crystals that are made to vibrate.

These micro-vibrations dissolve the water from the textiles, after which it is transformed into a fine mist and extracted. Through this process, no moisture is released into the room, only cold air. This protects against mould.

Allegedly, this model will be launched on the market in 2019. The purchase price is still uncertain.

When was the tumble dryer invented?

The basic principle is still the same today, only the design and the functionality of the individual programmes have been further developed.

The first hand-operated tumble dryer was invented by M. Pochon from France in the 1800’s. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first electric tumble dryer was introduced to the market. The first tumble dryer with a glass window was built by Brooks Stevens in the 1940s. Miele designed the first European tumble dryer in 1958.
