What is TRX and what is it used for?

TRX is an acronym for Total-body Resistance Exercise, or “resistance exercise for the whole body”. It is a device that consists of two elastic bands that are attached to a surface.

This surface can vary greatly and the best models come with various supports. There are ways of attaching the TRX to doors, walls or even taking it outdoors, using it on trees, parks or posts. The only care is that the place chosen supports your weight.

The exercise is done from the suspension of the body by these tapes. Once again, there is an incredible variety of possibilities. The whole body can be worked in some way.

For a piece of equipment like this to be recognised as an original TRX, it needs to follow two basic rules: the tapes should be 4 cm wide and made of nylon.

There is an official brand that bears the name of the sport, but several others make quality replicas.

Did you know that TRX is a very new exercise module?

It was created in the late 20th century by US Navy soldiers who needed a practical way to stay fit: something that could be done anywhere.

It spread very quickly and today it is already a fever. To give you an idea, it was only in 2006 that the sport crossed borders and became known outside the United States.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of TRX?

TRX allows a rare practicality in relation to physical exercises. It can be done anywhere and it is easy to transport, store and install. It is ideal for those who don’t have the time or financial conditions to go to a gym regularly.

Versatility can also be highlighted. It is possible to do exercises that work every muscle in the body. There is a huge range of possibilities of what you can do with your TRX. A quick search on the internet can give you several ideas.

There are many benefits. The increase in strength and weight loss are the main ones, since there is a great burning of calories and most of the exercises are related to muscle gain. Your posture will also improve a lot.

Among the not so positive points, we point out that it is an exercise that will often be done at home (although it is also offered in gyms), and, therefore, without supervision. This can be dangerous and lead to injury.

Check out the main advantages and disadvantages of TRX below:

Advantages
  • Very practical: can be done anywhere and is great for those who do not have so much time
  • Easy to store
  • Works the whole body and provides advantages such as muscle mass gain and weight loss
  • Improves posture and flexibility
Disadvantages
  • If done at home, will have no supervision, and can cause injuries
  • Can be quite difficult in the beginning for sedentary people
  • Not recommended for people with back problems

What are the main exercises performed on the TRX?

Many of the most traditional and well-known daily exercises can be done with even more efficiency with the TRX tape. Among them, we can highlight the abdominal crunches, squats and some variations of plank.

The important thing is to realize that a good workout on the device will have repetitions capable of working several muscles of the body. As we have already highlighted, it is this versatility that makes the TRX so exceptional.

How much does it cost?

A complete device for the practice of TRX has in the price one of its most striking features.

This variation happens due to the quality of the material (features such as weight supported and maximum extension) and the accessories offered. The more supports for the equipment to be attached in different places, the more the price should rise.

Purchase criteria: what to consider when choosing your TRX

We’ve already talked about the advantages of the TRX and the whys of acquiring this suspension training device. Now we will discuss the issues that will influence your choice of model.

Below, we will explain each one of them better!

Materials

The tape itself won’t change: it will always be nylon. But there are several other components of the TRX that will provide an enhanced experience depending on the quality of the materials used.

We highlight the gauntlets, where you will lean on to do the exercises. Not simply being plastic and having a rubber or foam finish helps a lot. It is a question of comfort for the practitioner and durability of the equipment.

The same goes for wall brackets: the stronger the karabiners, for example, the less chance of accidents. Prefer those made of steel. Reinforced seams will increase the lifespan of the tape.

Supported weight

It is common to see people installing two or more tapes in the same support, especially in gyms. For this to be done without major risks, it is fundamental that the weight supported by the device be great.

There are complete sets for TRX that support between 200 and 500 kg. If you are going to train alone at home, it makes no difference, but if you are going to train with someone or if the acquisition is for a larger group of people, it is good to pay attention to this specification!

Tape Extension

The length of the tape is related to where the machine will be installed. If it’s in your home, on a wall or door, standard numbers between approximately 1.50 and 2.50 metres will suffice.

But it’s possible that your home has very high ceilings and needs a longer length, or that you intend to do the exercise in places like trees or public parks. In that case, longer tapes will be needed.

Some models come with extenders among their accessories that solve this issue, taking the length of the tapes to more than 4 metres.

Accessories

TRX tapes, by themselves, are not very practical. Therefore, the kits are predominant in the market. But for each place you intend to install the equipment, a different type of support will be necessary.

For example, for doors an anchor is used, for walls, carabiners, for trees, extenders with the ability to be tied. Ideally, your chosen TRX should have all of these! Other important things are the bag for transport and the adjustments on the tape.
