Whether round, square, fluffy or smooth. Trivets protect your table surface from visible damage and scratches. Once you have found the function for your trivet, you can choose from different materials such as wood, cork or raffia. With our large trivet test 2022 we want to help you make the right decision when shopping. To help you quickly find the right trivet for you, we have presented some products and compared them with each other. With comparisons and important information on the topic of trivets, the guide should help you to make the purchase decision as easy as possible.

  • When buying, make sure that you choose a trivet made of solid materials. Soft materials such as felt cannot be washed, unlike wood, silicone, cork, glass or stainless steel.
  • Cork and wood are among the most popular materials. They not only look simple, but are also durable and heat-resistant materials.
  • But you don’t necessarily have to buy trivets. You can make your own from materials such as felt, wool or jeans.

The Best Trivet: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a trivet

What is a trivet?

In general, a trivet is suitable for pots and pans, but also for tea and coffee pots. Usually the diameter of the trivet is adapted to the pots or pans.

A trivet is an object that protects the table surface or work surface from scratches and damage and, in the best case, also keeps your food warm. Trivets are made of different materials, such as wood, bamboo or glass, and come in various shapes and colours.

What material can I use to protect my table?

To prevent visible damage from the heat of the pans and pots, protect your table with a trivet. High-quality materials such as cork, silicone or wood prevent all surfaces from burning.
Wood only catches fire at 230 degrees Celsius. So you don’t need to worry that your trivet will start to burn when you put the pot down.

To ensure that your trivet lasts a long time, it is best to use materials such as cork, silicone, glass, wood or metal. The most popular materials are fabric, metal and cork. Most metal coasters are made of galvanised metal or stainless steel. There are small feet on the underside of the coasters to ensure a distance to the table. Fabric and cork trivets are self-insulating as they keep your table cold and your food warmed by the bottom of the pot. All materials are heat-resistant and insulating. Nevertheless, solid trivets made of metal, glass, wood, cork or silicone are better for the purpose than trivets made of fabric and cardboard.

What are the alternatives to a trivet?

If trivets made of solid materials are not for you, you can try your hand at other materials. You can make your own trivet with fabrics such as wool, denim or wine corks. You can also felt, crochet or knit your own trivet. In the trivia section you will find two DIY’s on how to make your own trivet.

Decision-making style: What types of trivets are there and which is the right one for you?

What distinguishes a stainless steel trivet and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Stainless steel is a simple and modern material that fits into any home décor. This material not only looks good, but is also heat-resistant. Objects such as casseroles are perfect for a stainless steel trivet.

  • Stainless steel is a heat-resistant material
  • Easy to clean
  • Your trivet may start to rust
  • Not to everyone’s taste

What distinguishes a silicone trivet and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Silicone protects all surfaces and work surfaces from visible damage. Silicone trivets are also very easy to clean and are made of a soft but robust material.

  • robust material
  • You can put this trivet in the dishwasher without any problems
  • Not heat conductive

What distinguishes a trivet made of felt and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Felt is a natural material and therefore very popular. The trivets feel soft and also protect your table from scratches and damage.

  • Soft material
  • felt is water and dirt repellent
  • Not heat-resistant
  • Nevertheless, the felt trivet may only be cleaned dry

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate trivets

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible trivets. With these criteria, you can compare trivets with each other and thus make your decision easier:

In this section, we explain what the individual criteria are and offer you the opportunity to make your own trivet.

Did you know that felt is breathable and climate-regulating? Felt can cool you down in summer and warm you up in winter.

As we have already mentioned, there are different materials, some more heat-resistant and others less so, from which you can choose. Nevertheless, all trivets made of the different materials serve the same purpose: to protect your work surface and the surface of your table from visible damage. Trivets made of stainless steel, silicone, wood and glass protect the surface of your table and absorb the heat from pans and pots. Materials like these are durable and heat-resistant.

To let your creativity run wild, we recommend you try out unusual materials such as felt, denim, wine corks or even wool.

Here we have linked you to a short video in which you can see how to make a trivet out of wood and with metal details: Here we have listed the most important properties of the different materials.

Material Property
Wood Wood has a high compressive strength with simultaneous elasticity and resistance
Cork Cork is a light material, is temperature-equalising, insensitive and has a high elasticity
Glass Glass is an electrical insulator and has a low thermal conductivity
Silicone Silicone adheres to almost all materials and is very light
Stainless steel Stainless steel is a durable, conductive, hygienic and temperature-resistant material

Once you know how much money you want to invest in your trivet, the easier it is to make your buying decision. Prices vary depending on the material and quality. However, you should make sure that you buy a high-quality product so that you can benefit from it in the long term.

How to make a trivet out of jeans

If you have old jeans at home, instead of throwing them away in the recycling bin, you can upcycle them into a creative trivet. To make an unusual trivet out of jeans, you will need the following:

  1. 2 jeans
  2. Pins

First, cut the seams of the jeans very close to the edge. Then roll the cut seams into a kind of scroll and fix it with the pins. Now you can shape some leftover fabric from the jeans seam into a loop and fix it with pins. This way you can hang up your trivet. For those who don’t have any old jeans at home, we have found a tutorial with which you can make a trivet out of an old T-shirt:

Wool Pom Pom Trivet Tutorial

This DIY will brighten up your dining table with a colourful trivet. For this tutorial you will need:

  1. Heat-resistant wool in different colours (e.g. green and blue)
  2. Pompom craft kit (you can order this kit online to take home)
  3. 1 thick darning needle
  4. Scissors

Make sure you don’t use synthetic wool as it is not heat resistant.

Instructions for the pompoms: Wrap enough wool around the two half circles included in your pompom set. Then pin the two halves together and cut the wool at the sides. Now thread a wool thread between the templates and knot it in the middle. Do not cut this thread. The pompoms will stand up and you can remove the templates. Finally, you can perfect your pom-poms by trimming the protruding threads with a pair of scissors. After you have made a few pompoms, use the darning needle. Use the darning needle to string the pompoms one after the other on a thick wool thread. The strung pompoms, which by now should look like a pompom string, are now laid out in the shape of a snail. The individual circles that are created by laying them on are also joined together with a thread so that a uniform coaster is created.
