Since most electrical networks work with 110 and 220 currents, there are three types of transformers to work in those cases where you need to step up or step down the current. It is important that you are aware of the different types of transformers so that you know which one you need to buy.

  • Boost transformer: They are used to boost the current from 110 to 220 volts. Because they raise the power emitted by an electrical network, they are used to give power to tools that work with 220 volts, such as those used in European countries, Asia and Africa.
  • Step-down transformer: These are used to reduce the current emitted by the power plant, and reduce the voltage from 220 to 110 volts. Current required

The current used in Mexico is 127 or 110 volts, so you will rarely need a step-down transformer, unless you are working in a location whose energy properties are different from those provided by the power plant, or you plan to use American tools on another continent.

It is always good to read what voltage is accepted by the equipment you buy to see if it is compatible with your mains supply – some equipment, such as phone chargers, laptop power adapters and hairdryers can operate on 100 to 240 volts, so do not need a transformer.

High current

Don’t worry if you can’t find a transformer for 127 volts, as transformers and electronic equipment often work on voltages close to the designated voltage. For example, a 110-volt TV will work on a 127-volt mains and a 110 to 220-volt transformer will boost the current from 127 to 220 volts.

To give a clearer example, let’s say you import a TV or a tool from Germany, which is a country where the equipment works on 220 volts, if you try to use it at home it will not work, so you will need a step-up transformer that adapts the 127 volts to be compatible with 220 volt equipment.

Reduced current

In the unlikely event that you need a step-down transformer for use in Mexico, you can buy a 220 to 110 volt transformer without worrying about whether the equipment is 110 or 127 volts. As a reminder, the current in Mexico is either 127 or 110 volts, so you will rarely need a step-down transformer.

Power requirements

Not all step-down and step-up transformers are the same, as they have different wattage levels, which can be found by their numerical designation followed by a W. This is a factor that must be added to the power requirements of the transformer. This is a factor that you must take into account, as the correct operation of your equipment with your transformer will depend on it.

  • If you have a transformer whose wattage is lower than what your equipment needs, it will not work properly. For example, if you need to use a 400 W power tool, the transformer you must buy must have a minimum wattage of 1200 W. So if you will be using a power transformer with powerful equipment, you must choose a transformer capable of providing the necessary wattage.

Voltage regulator

In certain places where voltage often varies during emergencies, such as earthquakes or thunderstorms, power dips can occur where equipment operates at low or very low power. This is very dangerous for the equipment as the return of power can be sudden and can damage the equipment.

Number of plugs
