Do you know the situation: You want to buy a new appliance such as a tabletop dishwasher, but you don’t know which one is best for you? On the internet you can find a wealth of information, some of which contradicts each other and makes you feel more insecure than helpful?

We can help you solve this problem. Our tabletop dishwasher test 2022 should help you decide for yourself which table dishwasher is best for you. Tabletop dishwashers are the solution when there is not enough space for a large dishwasher. They are also very suitable for office kitchens or households with few dishes. There are some important factors to consider when choosing a tabletop dishwasher.

  • Tabletop dishwashers are a practical alternative to regular dishwashers where space is limited.
  • The appliances differ according to their connection options. They are either connected externally or to the water tap. Alternatively, there are models with a water tank instead of a connection.
  • A tabletop dishwasher can theoretically wash 2 to 6 place settings at a time, depending on its size, but to ensure clean dishes, the dishwasher should not be overfilled.

The Best Table Top Dishwasher: Our Choices

Table Top Dishwashers: Buying and evaluation criteria

Before buying a table dishwasher, there are certain criteria to consider in order to find the ideal appliance for you. The following points show the most important differences between table dishwashers.

Product dimensions

Depending on the size of the appliance, the tabletop dishwasher can hold 4 to 6 place settings, according to the manufacturer. Whether this is always realistic remains to be seen. After all, the small dishwasher should not be overloaded. Tetris masters will manage to tinker the possible number of place settings into the tabletop dishwasher, but the cleaning performance can drop noticeably with too many dishes. That is why it is advisable to wash a maximum of 4 place settings at a time, even if the manufacturer says that 6 should be possible. Then you can be sure that the dishes will come out really clean.

A big advantage of the mini dishwasher is its weight. Depending on the product, a table dishwasher weighs between 14 and 24 kilograms. Most table dishwashers reach a weight of 20 kilograms. This makes the appliance very mobile and it can also be moved around easily if it does not have a fixed connection. This makes this small dishwasher also very suitable for caravans or camping trips. In any case, the weight is not an obstacle.

Energy and water consumption

The energy and water consumption varies between the different appliances. Annual water consumption averages around 1,800 litres, while electricity consumption averages around 161 kWh per year. This means that a table dishwasher consumes a little more electricity than a normal dishwasher and usually only achieves energy efficiency class A+. On the other hand, the water consumption is positive, as it is really low. This can be attributed to a compact design. Overall, you definitely use less water than when washing dishes by hand.

Connection options

Basically, there are 3 different connection options for tabletop dishwashers. Either the tabletop dishwasher is connected to the siphon of the sink with a separate inlet and outlet, as with a normal dishwasher. For this, an additional stop valve should be purchased, which protects the kitchen in the event that water escapes from the hose.

Then there are tabletop dishwashers that are connected to the tap using a connection set. The disadvantage of this is that the sink is blocked while the dishwasher is running. In addition, some appliances generally work without a water connection and instead with a fillable water tank. However, these products are rather small, and thus limited to a capacity of around 2 place settings.

Noise emissions

On average, tabletop dishwashers operate at a noise level of between 47 and 58 dB. The louder ones tend to be cheaper and often smaller. According to comparative tests, appliances from Siemens and Bosch are the quietest, while especially the small tabletop dishwashers from MEDION, which have a capacity of 2 place settings, are among the noisier dishwashers.

After reading our guide, you will know the most important background information about tabletop dishwashers.

What is a tabletop dishwasher?

A tabletop dishwasher is a miniature version of a regular dishwasher. It is particularly useful when space is limited, for example in a caravan, or in small households. This mini dishwasher is also particularly practical for single households, office kitchens or the catering sector.

Depending on the level of convenience, a tabletop dishwasher has few or almost as many options as a regular dishwasher. These include functions such as a display with indicator, a short programme or accessories such as a cutlery basket.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a tabletop dishwasher?

One of the main advantages of a tabletop dishwasher is, of course, its size. Due to the rather small dimensions of the product, it is easier to create the necessary space. One disadvantage, however, is that the capacity of the tabletop dishwasher is considerably smaller than that of the regular size. On average, the miniature version can hold 2 to 6 place settings, while regular dishwashers can hold around 15 place settings. In addition, a tabletop dishwasher can be moved around easily and therefore does not need a fixed location. This can be a great help, especially in caravans or very small kitchens.

How does a tabletop dishwasher work?

Most tabletop dishwashers are connected to the siphon of the sink like regular dishwashers with a separate inlet and drain. The great advantage of this is that the sink remains free. One disadvantage, however, is that water can leak out of the hose. To prevent this, you can buy a separately available stop valve.

Connection to the tap is one of the most popular connection methods for tabletop dishwashers. This is because it is flexible, fast and the appliance remains mobile. (Image source: Ron Porter / Pixabay)

Furthermore, table dishwashers are available with a connection set for the water tap. In this case, the sink is also used as a drain, which means that the sink cannot be used for anything else while the appliance is in use. There are also products that do not require a water connection of any kind. These contain a water tank that must be filled before the appliance can be used. For the sake of clarity, all types of tabletop dishwashers are shown again in a table below.

Type Advantages Disadvantages
With separate inlet Sink remains free Needs additional stop valve
On tap No accessories needed Sink occupied
Without water connection Flexible positioning of the appliance Low capacity

Each variant has its advantages and disadvantages. However, the most important criterion you should consider is whether or not the appliance should be permanently connected.

How much does a tabletop dishwasher cost?

The price depends on the capacity and convenience of the appliance. Other factors include the volume of the product, the number of wash programmes, the possibility of an adjustable basket system, whether the AquaStop safety function is available and whether a display is available. The table below provides an overview of the different price classes of tabletop dishwashers:

Type Price range
Basic functions, little convenience Approx. 200 to 300 euros
Many functions, high comfort Approximately 350 to 600 Euro

If you value comfort, but still want to save money, we can only recommend that you wait for special offers. You can always find them in shops and online shops.

Which table dishwasher should you buy?

The table dishwasher test of 2020 showed that the Obmann and Bosch brands performed very well in the comparison. However, you still need to consider your individual requirements, such as which connection system you prefer or how much capacity you need. For specific product recommendations, we help you with our favourites in the previous chapter. The product recommendations listed there should make your purchase decision easier.

What size should a tabletop dishwasher be?

Depending on how many dishes you want to fit inside, there are smaller and larger appliances. There is no specific size recommendation, it all depends on your personal requirements for the product.

Options Product dimensions
Space for 6 place settings 50 x 55 x 43.8
Space for 4 place settings 53.5 x 44 x
Space for 2 place settings 44 x 42 x 43.5

The product dimensions are approximate, as the size of the appliance may vary slightly between different brands for different numbers of place settings. It should also be said that tabletop dishwashers produced for 4 place settings are very rare.

What are the alternatives to a tabletop dishwasher?

If you think that a table dishwasher is not right for you after all, there are a few alternatives. The first and obvious one would be to continue washing your dishes by hand. On the one hand, you save the cost of a new dishwasher, but on the other hand, you still have to do the work and use more water than with a dishwasher. The second alternative would be to buy a regular dishwasher. However, this requires more space. On the other hand, you also have a higher capacity than with a table dishwasher.

What should I bear in mind when looking after a tabletop dishwasher?

Basically, a mini dishwasher is a very low-maintenance product. You should make regular efforts to keep it clean and pay particular attention to the “no food leftovers in the dishwasher rule”.

  • Remove food residues: Before washing dishes with the tabletop dishwasher, food residues and coarse dirt must be removed.
  • Set a high temperature: To keep the interior clean, run a programme at high temperature.
  • Clean filters: Filters, which are attached to the bottom of the appliance, must be cleaned regularly to remove dirt.

In addition, the instructions for use of the table dishwasher should be read carefully to prevent incorrect use. If all these points are observed, the appliance can be in operation for several years. The dishwasher should be cleaned about every 3 months. It is also recommended to remove limescale deposits.

Where can a tabletop dishwasher be placed?

Depending on the product, proximity to the sink and a power connection are prerequisites. Apart from that, a table dishwasher can be placed anywhere. For example, it is also possible to install the appliance in a cupboard. The only important thing is that it is in a place that is moisture-free, stable and ideally well ventilated. The kitchen worktop is also a suitable place.

Which tabs are suitable for a tabletop dishwasher?

Basically, tabs that have been manufactured for use in a dishwasher are suitable. There are no special tabs only for tabletop dishwashers. However, with normal tabs, the use of half a tab is sufficient for a wash cycle of around 4 place settings.

How do I connect a tabletop dishwasher?

There are two ways to connect a tabletop dishwasher.

  • Connecting to the tap: Many tabletop dishwashers have an inlet hose with a so-called Perlator connector. All you have to do is remove the original aerator (attachment on the tap) from the tap. Sometimes, however, an adapter is needed because the thread diameter does not fit.
  • Connection to siphon and stop valve: Here, the drain is either also via the sink, or it is possible to connect the appliance like a normal dishwasher. However, many manufacturers assume operation via the tap, for which you need an adapter for the respective connection variant. It is therefore important to check whether all the necessary parts are present.

To connect the dishwasher, you now only need a few utensils. These include a screwdriver, water pump pliers and possibly a cloth and a bucket to catch the water.

A tabletop dishwasher is a practical alternative when space is at a premium. Ideally, the energy and water consumption should not exceed 161 kWh or 1,800 litres per year, whereby the size of the appliance should also be taken into account. For a wash cycle of 6 place settings, a little more electricity and water may be consumed than with 2 place settings.

Depending on whether the product has a fixed place available, it can be either permanently or temporarily connected, or even operated without a water connection with a water tank. Since good entry-level appliances can be purchased for as little as €200, it definitely pays to consider buying a tabletop dishwasher! Especially as the water consumption is definitely lower than with manual washing.
