The soap dispenser is one of the most practical products on the market. Its use in shops and homes has become more and more popular in recent years. It is a device that is refilled with liquid soap and then easily used for daily personal hygiene. You have probably seen it in shopping centres, universities or homes in its various forms.

The reasons why we find a soap dispenser almost everywhere are: for its practicality, for being more hygienic than using bars of soap, and for the savings. So if you’re thinking of buying one, here’s everything you need to know to make the best decision.

  • The soap dispenser is a very practical hygiene tool, which provides liquid soap and foam. It basically consists of a container that contains soap and an opening that releases it when activated automatically or manually.
  • They can be automatic (battery-operated and sensor-activated) or manual (traditional models with a pump that you press to release the soap). We will also find that some will dispense foam and others liquid soap.

What is a Soap Dispenser and what are its advantages?

A soap dispenser is a hygiene tool invented in the 1990s to make our lives easier. In essence, this tool is used to measure out the amount of liquid soap we use for our hygiene.

The advantages offered by all its variants range from increased soap yield (allowing us to save money), to skin care, as the possibility of bacteria present in bar soaps has been detected.

However, as not every invention is perfect, one of the main disadvantages is that it needs maintenance. It can get clogged and liquid soap, being less aggressive on the skin, is generally a bit more expensive.

Automatic or manual soap dispenser – what should you pay attention to?

Traditional, plastic dispensers, usually found in pharmacies, are often inexpensive and serve very practical purposes, for example in the bathroom. However, there is a wide range of automatic dispensers, which deliver soap via sensors. Which one do you think best suits your needs?

Automatic. This soap dispenser is battery operated. When a motion sensor is activated, it dispenses an exact dose of liquid soap or foam into your hands, which is wonderful as it saves time and possible product leakage.

You can find them in a variety of sizes, some 9cm high, ideal for homes, as well as 30cm high, which are often used in public bathrooms. They are made of resistant plastic and stainless steel.

Manual. Here we refer to the traditional soap dispenser. It is usually activated by pressing a button with the hand, which works as a pump so that the soap can come out. You’ve probably seen them a lot of times in homes and hotels.

Manual dispensers come in a wide variety of designs, which is ideal for adapting to any decor. However, as they are handled directly by hand, they tend to break down easily.

Automatic Manual

Buying criteria: factors that allow you to compare and rate different models of soap dispensers

Given the great variety that you will find in physical and online shops, we would like to mention some factors that you should take into account before buying a soap dispenser, whether for personal or public use. So pay close attention, so you can make the best decision.

  • Frequency of use
  • Material
  • Design
  • Capacity

Frequency of use

The lifespan of a soap dispenser will be related to the number of times it is used and the maintenance it is given. It would be absurd to buy a manual porcelain dispenser for a shopping mall bathroom, for example. However, there are models that adapt to different areas.

Household. When it comes to the home, you have the luxury of choosing the dispenser that suits your style. With different designs, they could be part of the décor. They are commonly made of materials such as glass or porcelain, although you will also find them in plastic; ideal for those who have children at home.

Public spaces. Due to the crowds in these places, it is recommended to install soap dispensers on the wall, either automatic or manual. Make sure that the soap storage capacity is one litre. At the same time, take into account that the plastic is resistant and if, on the contrary, you prefer to buy a steel one, make sure it is stainless steel.

Following the idea of the material the soap dispensers are made of, we want to mention a general classification, so you can choose the type that best suits what you are looking for: plastic, metal or other.

Plastic. This group includes most of the soap dispensers on the market. Maintenance is minor; a damp cloth will be enough to clean it. This type of dispenser could be used in both businesses and homes as its multiple designs adapt to any space.

Metal. You might think that metal would be the most resistant material, but you have to pay a lot of attention to its corrosion resistance. Otherwise, the soap dispenser would look awful over time. You could buy a metal dispenser if you want to use it in the commercial area, as they are very durable.

Other: ceramic, stone, glass, silicone. If you are an interior design enthusiast, or you want to give a very special gift, we recommend you to opt for an original model made of ceramic, stone or glass. From vintage to avant-garde, there are soap dispensers for all tastes.

There are many designers who have presented unique pieces of soap dispensers, so if you are thinking of acquiring one for your home, restaurant, gallery, or any other place where aesthetics are a must, don’t worry, there will always be one perfect for every style.

Minimalist. Minimalist style dispensers stand out for their simple shapes, neutral colours and for combining perfectly with any space. If you prefer your bathroom and kitchen to have a touch of simplicity, or you own an art gallery or simply want to give a sophisticated air, this would be your ideal style.

Vintage. This style of dispenser has an infinite variety and is perfect for people looking to add a unique touch to their spaces: porcelain, glass or plastic. They will stand out anywhere, from your personal bathroom to hotel rooms.

Industrial. An industrial dispenser is appropriate if you plan to use them in public restrooms in shopping centres, hospitals, schools and restaurants. They are usually wall-mounted, which means they take up less space in crowded places.

When buying a suitable soap dispenser, we must be very clear about the liquid soap storage capacity. This will determine how often the dispenser needs to be maintained.

300ml – 500ml. If you need a dispenser for your personal bathroom that will only be used by a few people, we recommend opting for one that holds 300ml to 500ml of soap. This amount is also perfect for use in the kitchen and small restaurant bathrooms.

600ml – 1000ml. It is not advisable to use a dispenser with a small storage capacity in crowded spaces as you would have to constantly refill the soap. In this case, it would be ideal to use one that holds between 600- 1000 ml of liquid soap, thus avoiding daily maintenance.
