Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a shower squeegee

What is a shower squeegee for?

A shower squeegee is a cleaning utensil. It is used to remove excess moisture from a material so that it can dry faster. The water is not drawn up or anything else, but removed from the material with the wiping lip like a snow shovel.

A shower squeegee is used to clean the shower cubicle or the tiles on the wall of a bathtub. This cleaning is very important, because with permanent use, residues on the tiles / walls of the shower cubicle can lead to lime deposits or mould. It is also more hygienic and supports a more pleasant shower experience.

What should I look for in a shower squeegee?

A typical shower squeegee consists of a wiping lip and a handle. The handle is what makes it comfortable and looks good. The comfort can be influenced: By the material the handle is made of or by the shape of the handle. This can be ergonomic or have a simple shape. The material the handle is made of is discussed in the following subsection.

The most important point of a shower squeegee is the wiping lip, which determines how well the shower squeegee works. The wiping lip is usually made of rubber and in some cases silicone, there is no known advantage regarding the two materials.

Another difference is the hardness of the rubber, so wiping lips made of hard rubber are suitable for very smooth surfaces and for those that exert more pressure when wiping. The soft rubber wiping lips are particularly suitable for surfaces that are not completely flat, as they adapt better to the surface when wiping.

To make sure you don’t forget to use the shower squeegee, it can help to buy a shower squeegee with a wall attachment.

What materials are shower squeegees made of?

The most common materials for shower squeegees are stainless steel, zinc or plastic. At the same time, the lip of the squeegee is made of rubber or silicone. The handle, on the other hand, can be made of different materials, such as metal, plastic, silicone or partially rubberised.

Metal shower squeegees are visually attractive, but somewhat impractical, as they are usually heavier. They are also more slippery. The shower squeegees made of plastic or silicone are a little more practical to use, but the best ones for working with “wet” hands are the shower squeegees with the partially rubberised handles.

For which materials is a shower squeegee suitable?

The shower squeegee is suitable for various surfaces. Especially for smooth, solid surfaces made of glass, plastic, wood and metal. Also for tiled and tiled surfaces, with the exception of grout areas. Another suitable area of use is sealed cement floors. Here we have a few more ideas for using your shower squeegee, as it can also be used well outside the bathroom.

Application area Ideas for use
Kitchen A shower squeegee can also be used in the kitchen, as it makes it possible to quickly get coarse dirt, such as crumbs or the dripping water after washing up, under control. This means that larger amounts of water on the worktop can simply be directed towards the kitchen sink.
Outdoor area Especially after a downpour, it can be tedious to free the garden furniture from water. Here, too, a shower squeegee is very helpful, as you can quickly remove the water from the smooth surfaces without having to wipe it off several times.
Exterior windows on the car Similar to mirrors or glass in the bathroom, the shower squeegee is also a practical and quick cleaning utensil here. With a slightly longer handle, even small people can easily clean the windows of the car completely.

What does a shower squeegee cost?

The price of shower squeegees ranges from about four to almost 60 euros. So you can see that quality and functionality play a decisive role.

In addition, the price depends on the purchase channel. The different prices are also due to the material used and the degree of processing. For a good solid shower squeegee, you should budget about 15 euros.

What alternatives are there to a shower squeegee?

In the meantime, there are electronic window vacuum cleaners; with these devices, the cleaning agent is first applied and then vacuumed up with the window vacuum cleaner. The window vacuum looks like a large window wiper and works in principle like a hand-held hoover. However, these devices are in a higher price range than the normal window wipers.

Decision: What is a shower squeegee and which one is right for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between two types of shower squeegees:

  • Classic shower squeegee
  • Rectangular shower squeegee

Shower squeegees have the purpose of protecting your shower wall from unsightly water stains. You probably know the classic T-shaped squeegee. In the meantime, however, manufacturers also offer you a wider selection in this area.

In the following section, we will take a closer look at the above-mentioned types of shower squeegees. With a list of advantages and disadvantages, we will try to help you make a decision.

What is a classic shower squeegee and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

This is the best-known and still the most widespread variant. The vertical side is the handle, while the horizontal side is equipped with a rubber to pull off the shower. Basically, this puller is very easy and uncomplicated to use.

You can buy a very simple model made of plastic or a model made of metal. You can also choose from different options in terms of handle length. Adjustable models are particularly suitable for very high shower walls or if you are not that tall.

There are different hangers for all squeegees that you can use for storage. This means you don’t have to put the shower squeegee down on the shower floor. You can choose a simple version with a suction cup or a holder that is firmly anchored in the wall.

  • Easy to use
  • Size adjustable
  • Clunky design

What is a rectangular shower squeegee and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

This variant is becoming more and more popular because it is a real eye-catcher visually. Here, the rubber for pulling off the glass is usually attached to an edge. However, you can also opt for a model that is made entirely of rubber.

The rectangular shower squeegee is visually more appealing, but its handling is not comparable with the classic T squeegee. The fastening options are limited and they cannot be adjusted in size either. These shower squeegees are therefore less suitable for small people or very high glass walls.

If you want to install the rectangular shower squeegee in your shower, however, it is the more space-saving option.

  • Stylish
  • Space-saving
  • Not adjustable in size
  • Limited attachment

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate shower squeegees

In the following, we would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate shower squeegees. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a certain model is suitable for you or not. In summary, these are:

  • Material
  • Design
  • Size / Dimensions
  • Fastening
  • Functions
  • Use in damp conditions

In the following paragraphs you can read about the individual purchase criteria and how you can classify them.

In most cases, shower squeegees are made of several materials. For example, they consist of a wiping lip made of rubber or silicone and a holder or handle made of plastic, metal, rubber or a mixture of these.

Each of these materials has certain advantages and disadvantages. Models made of plastic usually have a low weight and can therefore be dropped without breaking anything. Some models, however, have to be pressed on a little harder to effectively remove water residues.

Material Properties
Plastic Low weight, little destruction if it falls to the floor, inexpensive, rubber lip usually cannot be replaced when it ages
Metal High weight, slippery surface, good cleaning properties with low counterpressure, risk of damage if it falls

The plastic handle models are perhaps visually unappealing. Nevertheless, they are cheaper. However, this also means that the entire extractor may have to be bought again if the lip shows signs of ageing.

A metal handle is sometimes found to be too slippery. If it then falls down, it can damage things. Accordingly, a secure suspension or perhaps a strap for around the wrist is particularly important.

Rubberised handles are particularly popular. They provide a comfortable feeling in the hand and reduce the risk of slipping. They also somewhat reduce the risk of damage.

If you attach importance to the interior design of your bathroom, it makes sense to get a higher-quality product made of stainless steel. Not only do they look elegant, they also usually have a better finish and come with a hanging device.

If you are getting your shower enclosure squeegee for purely utilitarian reasons, the functional plastic shower squeegees that can be easily stored in a cupboard or hung up by means of a cord will also do the trick.

Size / Dimensions

The size of the shower squeegee plays a decisive role in the purchase. As already mentioned, the range for ordinary shower squeegees is from 20 to 35 centimetres. This is because the width of the squeegee varies between models. And it would be annoying if you had to use it again just because of a narrow residual strip.

On the other hand, if the rubber lip is too wide, you might not be able to reach narrow spots. A large wiping width means less effort, unless you have angled areas that are difficult to reach with a large wiping width. Shower squeegees with a small squeegee width are ideal for shower enclosures with angled areas.

Therefore, you should ask about the wiping width of the shower squeegee.

The wiping width should also not be chosen too large, as there are hard-to-reach or winding areas in the shower or bathroom.

The handle length of the shower squeegee also counts. You can ask yourself whether you mainly want to clean surfaces at body height. Or do you intend to reach the floor or high spots as well? Nowadays there are many shower squeegees with adjustable handles.

Of course, you can simply store the shower squeegee with your other cleaning accessories. But isn’t it more convenient to simply attach it decoratively close to where you use it? There are three different methods of attachment. This also depends on the specific conditions in your bathroom.

Suspension cord

This allows the squeegee to be hung directly on a hook, a suitable door handle or on the shower fitting. However, you should make sure that the cord does not slip off easily. This can damage the shower or bathtub under certain circumstances. In the event of this risk, you should at least choose a lightweight item made of plastic.

Wall bracket

Depending on the model, a single hook or a double hook is particularly suitable. There are various forms of wall mounting, such as hooks for screwing, gluing, or with a vacuum system. The choice depends in particular on the desired effort and the survival time of the mount. In addition, you may want to leave as few traces as possible.

In that case, you should consider the screw-on hooks last. If you have a matching shower enclosure or door, you can simply hang an attachment for its shower wiper on it. This saves space and is visually appealing. Some manufacturers supply an attachment right away. This way you can be sure that it is the right size.

The window vacuum cleaner looks like a large window wiper and works in principle like a hand-held vacuum cleaner

In addition to the adjustable handle and wall mount, there is also the difference between fixed and rotating squeegee heads. These may influence the cleaning process, either positively or negatively. Maybe you’d like more flexibility. Or maybe it’s just annoying that the mop head doesn’t stay in the same position. This means that you should pay close attention to the product’s reviews before buying.

Use in damp conditions

You should keep in mind that most of the time you will probably use the shower squeegee after showering, which means that you will have to deal with wet hands and a damp environment.

Especially shower squeegees made entirely of stainless steel can prove to be impractical, as their surface is particularly slippery when wet and they are usually heavier than shower squeegees made of plastic. The best shower squeegees are those with an ergonomic handle.

Interesting facts about shower squeegees

Why do I need a shower squeegee?

You can use a shower squeegee for many purposes. First and foremost, you should pursue three goals with the bathroom cleaner:

  • Stripe-free removal
  • Reduction of limescale stains
  • Reduction of water stains

All these features can be used on different surfaces (tiles, glass, mirrors, acrylic). You can clean walls or shower cubicles with a short handle and floors with a long handle. There are also special scrapers for round cubicles.

The correct use of a shower scraper

In most cases, the panes of the shower enclosure are surrounded by a rectangular frame. Place the squeegee horizontally or vertically in an upper corner and pull the squeegee parallel to the frame to the end of the pane. Then repeat this process, overlapping the squeegee a few centimetres at a time to the area already wiped. Finally, wipe again along the edge at the “end of the pane”.

Which cleaning products are best for shower squeegees?

So if you want to clean a glass enclosure or mirror, use a glass cleaner. If it’s the back wall of the shower, you probably choose a tile cleaner. For floors, multifunctional vinegar cleaners are best.

You can get all these products in simple supermarkets. On the other hand, specialist shops or the internet can also provide a lot of inspiration in terms of care products. A proven cleaning agent for window panes is ammonia, which should be applied warm because this is the best way to dissolve the dirt.

If you still have particularly stubborn limescale residues, cold vinegar water is suitable; simply spray this onto the pane and wipe it off with a window wiper.

What accessories should be considered for shower squeegees?

Firstly, the quality of the squeegee lip plays an important role, because it is ultimately used to clean the surface. It should therefore be neither too soft nor too hard and should not contain any interruptions or the like.

Many manufacturers also supply a replacement lip. You can also decide beforehand whether a narrow or an extra wide attachment is better suited to your project.

Nowadays, many shower mops have a long handle that can be unscrewed. This means that the product can be used multifunctionally. Rotating mop heads and folding handles can also make the cleaning process more flexible.

Hooks, holders and wall hangers are very popular. These make it easier to clean up after cleaning. You can easily attach your shower squeegee near the shower cubicle without it looking visually unappealing.
