What is shower gel?

Shower gel is a personal care product that is used exclusively during bathing. Like bar soap and body wash, shower gel works to cleanse the skin while it is wet. It is an alternative for those with dry skin as it contains less PH than normal soap and dries the skin less.

What are the advantages?

Shower gel has many advantages, the first being that unlike bar soap, the ingredients in this product mean that the skin does not dry out as easily. Remember how your skin feels after scrubbing with soap, it does feel clean but rough at the same time, which is exactly what shower gel avoids.

On the other hand, shower gel is much easier to use than bar soaps, for the simple fact that it comes in a plastic container that you only need to press gently to extract the liquid, while bar soap has to be placed in your shower so that it doesn’t slip and cause accidents.

  • Moisturises and cares for dry skin
  • Has less PH than traditional soap
  • Ease of use due to packaging
  • Less environmentally friendly
  • Some products are petroleum-based

Shower gel, body wash and bar soap – what should you pay attention to?

Ok, before we continue you should know that shower gel is not the same as bar soap or body wash and many users tend to confuse the two. However, what they do share is their function, as all three products are used to cleanse your skin while you bathe, but let’s take a closer look at the differences.

Shower gel. The shower gel, as its name suggests, is much more similar to a gel. Of the three products, the shower gel is the one with the thickest consistency and is therefore recommended for use in hot places as it will not lose its texture when used. Its main function is to cleanse and moisturise the skin.

Body wash. On the other hand there is the body wash which has a much less dense texture which makes it perfect for cold places because the liquid will not harden too much. The fragrance is also another difference as the body wash is not as strong as the shower gel.

Bar soap. There is very little to explain about this one, it is the one your mum used to bathe you with when you were just a little innocent child. The shape of this cleanser is firm in bar form and has a higher PH than shower gel and body wash. In terms of fragrance it is faint in most versions.

Shower gel Body wash Bar soap
Texture Dense Light Rigid
Packaging Rigid plastic Rigid plastic Plastic or cardboard bag
Fragrance Strong Strong Faint
PH 5 to 6 5 to 6 Between 7 and 8

How much does a shower gel cost?

The shower gel is a product that varies a lot in price but certainly, for the function it has, it can be considered high considering products that perform the same function. The price of the shower gel is basically affected by the incorporation of exotic ingredients such as oils and extracts of seeds or plants.

Purchasing criteria

Finally, we are going to explain the different factors and purchasing criteria that you need to take into account when buying any shower gel. If we don’t pay attention to this, the products we buy are not what we expected or we simply don’t like them. Without further ado, here is what you should consider:

  • Type of fragrance
  • Presentation
  • Complementary ingredients

Type of fragrance

It would seem that the fragrance of the shower is a minor thing, but no, it is not and never will be. Imagine that this fragrance is the one that your skin will be giving off for a good part of the day and that people who are close to you will surely be able to perceive. Now, it is more important to match the fragrance of your perfume or lotion.

Citrus fragrances. Designed mainly for young people who want to give an essence of freshness to their person. You can tell the fragrance of your shower gel from its packaging, but mainly citrus fruits such as lemon, orange and grapefruit are used. If you have light perfumes they will match perfectly.

Plant/flower fragrances. You could say that this type of fragrance is for more conservative people who want to have a more sober scent while still smelling good. As with citrus fragrances, this type of fragrance goes well with stronger perfumes or lotions and will complement a scent that is unique to you.

Another factor to consider when you are about to buy your shower gel is its presentation. What do we mean? Basically whether it’s made for women or men. We have nothing against the universal use of products but you know that marketing plays on gender roles and if you care about that you’ll want to pay attention.

Feminine presentation. The vast majority of shower gels you will see on the market have a more feminine presentation and this is because it is precisely women who use this product the most. You can distinguish this presentation by the use of ingredients such as flowers and colours such as pink or yellow.

Male presentation. On the other hand, there are also presentations focused on men in the hope that little by little they will buy more and more of this product. Unlike the feminine presentation, the shower gel uses ingredients such as mint or peppermint and the colour of the presentation tends to be blue or grey.

Complementary ingredients

Finally, you should also make sure that the shower gel you are interested in buying has certain ingredients that are considered “complementary” to help the texture of the liquid stay as good as new. In this section you will need to know that the shower gel may contain both plant extracts and petroleum.

Plant extracts. Essentially, oils derived from plants or even seeds. Many of these, as well as flavouring, help the consistency of the liquid to be maintained, but make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients and avoid having to suffer unnecessary rubbing or, worse still, the generation of hives.

Petroleum. Petroleum is the other ingredient commonly used to make the texture of shower gel stay the same over time. However, not all users like to use petroleum derivatives on their skin and considering the current damage to the environment, it is zero friendly to our planet.
