Who doesn’t love them, pancakes. Unfortunately, traditional recipes consist largely of simple carbohydrates, namely white flour and sugar. With the addition of eggs and milk, fried out in butter, they taste really delicious, but are high in calories and still provide hardly any nutrients. Let alone a lot of protein, which is known to play an essential role in building and maintaining muscles.

Protein pancakes, on the other hand, contain more protein. Whey protein is usually added to protein pancake mixes, but vegan products that do not use animals are also available.

Furthermore, many protein pancakes contain sweeteners instead of sugar. In this way, the calories from carbohydrates can be reduced even further and the pancakes still taste sweet. Some protein pancakes are also available completely unsweetened.

In addition, some protein pancakes contain no or less wheat flour. Often, at least some of it is replaced by oat flour, for example, which gives the pancakes additional nutrients.

Who are protein pancakes suitable for?

First and foremost, athletes who have an increased protein requirement can benefit from Protein Pancakes. Even if you are following a low carb diet, protein pancakes are suitable for you, especially as a substitute for traditional pancakes.

Normally, 0.8g of protein per kg of body weight is recommended daily. For a 70kg person, this means 56g. However, if you are exercising more and want to build and maintain muscle, it may be important to eat more protein. Especially after training, your body needs protein, which can be consumed in the form of delicious protein pancakes.

Even if you sometimes have to be quick, protein pancakes are just right for you. Some are available pre-packaged, but most are available as a baking mix. The practical thing about them is that you usually don’t have to do anything other than mix water with the powder and fry the pancakes. No more picking the ingredients together!

Protein pancakes also fit into a low carb diet. They do contain some carbohydrates, but a lot less than traditional pancakes.

The protein powder replaces some of the flour and because sweeteners are usually used instead of sugar, more carbohydrate calories are eliminated. Even if you’re not on a low carb diet but want to lose some weight, protein pancakes could help.

The high protein content keeps you full and satisfied for longer. They also help you not to lose muscle mass, which is very important when dieting. In total, 8% of the calories in our test winner’s protein pancakes come from fat, 21% from carbohydrates and 71% from protein.

How much do Protein Pancakes cost?

The price of protein pancakes can vary depending on the brand and composition. Often, a ready-made baking mix costs similar to protein powder. The cheapest package we found was about €9, the most expensive €26,40.

Of course, it always makes sense to look at the prices per kilo. These are usually between €15 and €44. Ready-made and packaged pancakes are available for a little more than €2 per piece.

What are the alternatives to protein pancakes?

Depending on what you are looking for in your pancakes, there are a few alternatives. It’s up to you whether you want to cook the protein pancakes yourself or get the protein you need from other dishes.

If you don’t want to buy a ready-made mix, you can simply make your own pancakes. Prepare a batter with the ingredients of your choice and add whatever protein powder you have on hand.

By the way, you can also simply put the batter you use for protein pancakes into a greased waffle iron. This way you get delicious protein waffles for a change.

If your main goal is to get a quick protein boost after a workout, good old protein powder is a great option. It’s easy to drink as a shake and easy to take with you.

If a protein-rich breakfast is important to you, try stirring a portion of protein powder into your porridge. The oatmeal makes the porridge rich in good, complex carbohydrates. The extra protein makes it an even more balanced meal that gives you energy for the day.

If you would rather have something to-go, a snack for on the go, there are also alternatives to the pre-packed protein pancakes. For example, you could always have a protein bar in your bag or a protein cookie as a sweet temptation in between meals.

What is a protein pancake mix with whey and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Most protein pancake mixes currently on the market have their increased protein content from the addition of whey protein. Whey protein is one of the most popular protein powders and is used by many athletes to support their muscles. Whey or whey protein is considered a complete protein because it contains all nine essential amino acids that the body cannot produce itself.

Whey is extracted from milk during the cheese-making process. The whey obtained from the milk contains only a small amount of Whey protein and still has to go through some filtration methods before it produces the final finished product. During the processing steps, lactose, milk fat and water are removed from the whey.

The advantage of whey is that it has the highest biological value of all protein powders. This means that your body can utilise it particularly well. It is easy for your body to absorb the whey protein quickly, which is especially practical after training.

Whey is generally not free of lactose. Although lactose is removed during production, Whey Protein Concentrate still contains the remaining lactose. If the whole thing is filtered further, you get Whey Protein Isolate, which is better suited for people with lactose intolerance due to the lower lactose content.

In the case of protein pancakes, most mixes also contain other dairy products in the list of ingredients. So if you want lactose-free protein pancakes, you are often wrong with baking mixes with Whey. Here we can recommend a vegan variant.

One disadvantage is that whey protein contains relatively little of the amino acid glutamine. Glutamine also plays an important role in building muscle and maintaining a strong immune system and should therefore be obtained from other sources.

What is vegan protein pancake mix and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Unlike Whey, vegan protein pancake mixes do not contain any animal products. Neither dairy nor egg products. This makes them suitable for anyone who wants to avoid them and eat a vegan diet. They can also be enjoyed by people with lactose intolerance or egg allergy.

There is a whole range of vegan proteins. The best known include pea, hemp, rice and soy protein. Which vegetable proteins are used in baking mixes varies. Sometimes it is also a mixture of several vegan protein sources.

While whey protein contains all nine essential amino acids, plant proteins often do not cover all of them. However, a complete amino acid profile can also be achieved with a combination of different vegan proteins.

Quite apart from the fact that livestock farming and cows are a worryingly large burden on the environment anyway and contribute significantly to extreme climate change, the production of vegan protein powder is often more environmentally friendly.

While the production of 100g of whey protein emits on average between 1.8 and 2.5kg of CO2, the production of the same amount of soy protein powder only releases 400g of CO2. The environment will thank you.

In addition, vegetable protein powders contain little fat, which makes vegan protein pancakes lower in calories. Overall, vegan protein pancakes are generally easier to digest than those with whey.

In addition, vegan protein sources do not contain cholesterol, but they do contain dietary fibre. This stimulates digestion, lowers blood sugar levels and increases your feeling of satiety, which can be particularly helpful when dieting.

Nevertheless, they have a few disadvantages, e.g. the body usually takes longer to absorb plant-based protein than Whey. After training, however, it is important to supply the body with the important protein quickly. On the other hand, a slower absorption has the advantage that the body can draw protein from the digestion over a longer period of time.

Another potential confounding factor is that vegan protein powders can have a stronger inherent taste than whey protein. However, in combination with other ingredients in the pancake mix, this could be masked.

Last but not least, there is unfortunately less choice of vegan protein pancakes on the market than those with Whey. However, as there is currently a trend towards more plant-based diets and eco-friendliness, this could also change in the future.

What is a gluten-free protein pancake mix and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The main advantage of gluten-free protein pancakes is, of course, that they can be enjoyed by people with coeliac disease or wheat allergies. Instead of wheat flour, gluten-free flour alternatives such as buckwheat, almond or rice flour are used. These also contain more vitamins and minerals than white flour and fill you up better.

What is a ready-made pancake mix and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

In addition to protein pancake mixes, there are also ready-made protein pancakes that you can take with you individually packaged. This is great if you are on the road a lot or need something sweet to satisfy your hunger in the afternoon at work.

If you’re not prepared and get hungry when you’re out of the house, it’s easy to end up with unhealthy snacks. A pre-packed protein pancake, on the other hand, can be a wholesome snack that keeps you full until the next main meal.

For home use, however, baking mixes have more advantages than pre-packaged protein pancakes. Because they are individually packaged, there is a lot of plastic waste. In addition, this is often simply thrown into the residual waste when travelling and is therefore not recycled.

In addition, the price-performance ratio is worse. Assuming you use 25g of baking mix for a protein pancake, the price is at least €0.37 but no more than €1.10, depending on the supplier. The packaged protein pancakes usually cost over €2 per piece.

As you have already seen from the different types of protein pancakes, the ingredients used for the pancakes play an important role. Protein pancakes can vary greatly in terms of the proteins used.

Most contain Whey, but others contain a plant-based protein or a combination of several vegan protein sources. Even if you live gluten-free, it is important for you to pay attention to the ingredients.

If you are lactose intolerant, you should also check whether the protein pancakes contain milk. Many products contain not only Whey, but also other milk products such as milk powder or milk protein.

Another point is how and whether you want your pancakes sweetened. Most protein pancakes are sweetened with sweeteners such as acesulfame K, sucralose, saccharin and sodium cyclamate.

Although sweeteners have no calories, they are often not optimal for the body.

When you eat sweeteners, the sweet taste can cause the pancreas to release insulin because your body thinks you’ve eaten sugar that it should digest. However, since no sugar is coming, blood sugar levels drop, triggering an abrupt feeling of hunger. You may end up eating the calories that you “saved” with the sweetener.

There are also some pancake mixes that do not contain any sweetener at all. If you still want something sweeter in the end, a dash of maple syrup or some fresh fruit might help.


No matter how protein-rich they are, you probably wouldn’t buy protein pancakes if you didn’t like the taste. Especially if you’re a fan of American pancakes, you’re probably hoping for a result that’s just as good as the original.

Many protein pancakes have a flavour that is called neutral, natural or pancake flavour. If you just want a version of the classic breakfast hit with more protein, you might be right with these varieties.

Other products have flavours like vanilla or chocolate. There are also more unusual varieties, such as white chocolate coconut or chocolate banana.

Pre-packaged protein pancakes often come with a sweet filling, the flavour of which can vary. For example, they may taste like vanilla, chocolate, peach or caramel.


Protein pancake mixes are available in different quantities. Ready-made protein pancakes can be purchased individually or in packs of several.

Baking mixes are available in quantities as small as 240g. Normally, up to 1000g of protein pancake powder are sold. In between, there are a few products of e.g. 300, 400, 500, 600 or 900g.

In this table you can see for how many pancakes one baking mix is sufficient, assuming that 25g of the mix is used for one pancake. Many suppliers recommend 50g as a portion, so the table also shows you how many 50g portions you will get.

Note, however, that some products may have different quantities on them, so 80g, for example, may be equivalent to one serving. The size of your pancakes also depends on how you prefer to prepare them.

The right amount for you depends on how often you want to prepare protein pancakes. If you want to try it out for interest’s sake, we advise you to use a smaller packet for the time being. However, if you are a tried-and-tested pancake fan and it is important to you to get enough protein every day, you can also choose a larger pack.


On the one hand, you can look at the price per pack of protein pancake mixes, which is between €9 and €26.40. On the other hand, you can look at the price per kg. On the other hand, the price per kg, which is about 15 to 44€. Of the products we looked at, a kilo of baking mix costs an average of 27€.

If it is most important to you to buy a cheap product, then look for low prices in the first place. Next, you can check if you are satisfied with the ingredients and the flavour. Especially when it comes to baking mixes with whey protein, there are many products with similar ingredients that cost more or less, depending on the brand.

If the price is not too important to you, we advise you to look for a product with ingredients and flavours that suit you. Then you can decide whether it is worth the price or not.
