The potato ricer is a practical kitchen aid for preparing delicious dishes such as spaetzle, mashed potatoes or croquettes. Cooked potatoes can be mashed with comparatively little effort. Other vegetables can also be mashed to taste, or dough preparations can be shaped. Of course, not every potato ricer is like the other.

We have compared different types and models of potato ricers so that you know which one will make your favourite dish the best. You will find out which potato presses are particularly suitable for which preparation methods and what you should look out for when buying.

But not every potato ricer is equally suitable for all dishes. Therefore, we have put together a small selection of products so that you can find the right potato ricer for you.

Potato ricers: Buying and evaluation criteria

Potato presses differ in a number of aspects. These aspects can determine what the press is suitable for and how recommendable it is. To find the right potato ricer for you, you should pay attention to the following:

Type of perforated discs

The shape and size of the sieve holes determine which applications the machine is suitable for. With small holes the result is a fine mass, with larger holes the crushed mass will be coarser. So before buying, you should think about what you want to use the press for.

Potato ricers with several perforated discs can be used flexibly.

To be able to use the potato ricer flexibly, models with several perforated discs are particularly suitable. The sieve is not fixed to the press, but can be inserted by the user. Such a potato press is usually supplied with perforated discs for fine, medium and coarse thicknesses. However, some presses also have perforated discs with elongated holes, which can be used, for example, to press spaetzle into its classic shape.

A press with different perforated discs is particularly recommended if you want to use the appliance frequently and for different dishes. For occasional cooks who only need the potato ricer for one particular preparation, however, the simple version with a fixed sieve may be sufficient.


Since you have to press the press with a lot of force, the handle should not cut into the skin. Angular handles can feel painful on the palms if a lot of force is applied.

So to avoid discomfort when pressing, make sure that the handles are comfortable to hold. This is the case, for example, with handles with silicone pads or flattened edges. People with little arm strength in particular should make sure that the handle is comfortable to hold.

A padded or flattened handle prevents the potato ricer from pressing uncomfortably into the skin.

It is also important that the handles fit firmly in the hand. If they are too slippery, the press can slip out of your hands while you are working. A smooth metal or plastic handle is therefore not ideal.

Support surface for pots

To catch the mass after pressing, you can of course simply hold the potato press over a bowl. However, this requires even more strength, as you have to hold the press straight while pressing.

With a pot holder, the potato press does not slip.

Many models therefore have a holder that can be clamped to the pot or bowl. In this way, the press does not slip and the mashed potato lands purposefully in the container.

Of course, the potato ricer also works without such a device. However, the holder makes it much more convenient to use the press. If you buy such a potato ricer, you should make sure that the holder is also suitable for different diameters – otherwise the ricer may only fit a single pot.

Stability and material

With raw potatoes or hard vegetables, it can happen that you have to press on the handles with a lot of force. Of course, these should not bend. High-quality models are made of stainless steel or other sturdy metals. If you really only want to press soft potatoes, then a cheaper version is also sufficient, but you should be careful with this one.

Most potato presses are made of stainless steel or other metals. Some models are also made of plastic. This makes the device lighter overall, but also increases the likelihood that the handles will bend or break.

Cleaning options

To ensure that the potato ricer can be used for a long time and does not get dirty after a few uses, it should be easy to clean. Models that can be dismantled into their individual parts are particularly practical. This makes it easy to wash each component, let it dry and then reassemble it.

With potato presses that cannot be disassembled, there is a risk that food residue will remain in the joints or edges after use.

Some potato presses are even dishwasher safe. However, if it is not explicitly stated by the manufacturer, it is better not to put your potato ricer in the dishwasher. Otherwise, unsuitable models may rust or the outer layer may peel off.

What is a potato ricer and what is it used for?

A potato ricer usually consists of a container with a sieve, a pressing disc and a lever with which this disc is pressed into the sieve. The device is similar in design and principle to the more familiar garlic press, it is just slightly larger.

Potatoes are placed in the container and crushed. With relatively little effort, you can make mashed potatoes, for example. Depending on the size of the recesses, the mass ends up being rather fine or coarse.

You can use potato ricers to prepare various dishes. Not only can potatoes be mashed to a pulp, but cooked vegetables or fruits can also be easily mashed.

Another possible use for potato presses is to make spaetzle. The dough is put into the press and pressed through the sieve holes. This is how the classic long spaetzle shapes are created.

Not every potato press is suitable for spaetzle, although the terms spaetzle press and potato press are often used for the same device.

For this reason, the potato press is often called a spaetzle press. But beware: although you can also mash potatoes with every spaetzle press, not every potato press is also suitable for spaetzle. In many models, the sieve holes are too close together, too small or not shaped correctly. In addition, the tough spaetzle dough can ooze out the side of the lever. If you want to mash both potatoes and spaetzle with the press, you should find out what the respective appliance is suitable for before buying it.

What types of potato ricer are there?

The best-known type of potato ricer is the one with a lever, which is the main focus of this article. However, there are also other models, some of which are known by other names.

Potato ricer with lever

The most common potato ricer today consists of a container with a sieve and a lever. The container can be of different sizes, but a filling volume of 250 ml is common. This version is particularly suitable for soft vegetables such as cooked potatoes. But other types of vegetables can also be made into porridge. Because the force required to squeeze is otherwise too great, only soft-cooked vegetables should be filled into the press.

Another advantage of the lever press is that you can make more than just porridge. For some dishes, such as spaetzle or spaghetti ice cream, a dough has to be pressed into long strings. You can also use this form of potato press for this.

However, you should know that not every model is suitable for every dish. Some potato presses with levers are only for soft potatoes, some can be used to prepare dumplings, others to make spaetzle or spaghetti ice cream.

Potato ricer with crank

Crank potato ricers are much larger than the lever version. While the lever potato ricer is placed on a bowl or pot, this one has a built-in container.

The contents are pressed through the sieve by the turning movement of the crank and thus shredded. Some models also have a knife that chops the potatoes before they are mashed. This variant is more reminiscent of a manual blender than a press.

Potato presses with a crank are also classically known under the names:

  • Masher

The design of pasta presses is also reminiscent of a potato press with a crank. However, these appliances are specially designed to press pasta dough into shape.

Electric potato press

An electric potato ricer is rare, but it does exist. Usually, it is an extra attachment for the masher. Instead of being chopped up, as the normal knife attachment of the masher would do, the potatoes are mashed with electric power.

Since you do not have to use your own power with this version, it is also suitable for mashing uncooked and hard vegetables.

How do you operate a potato ricer?

Just as with a garlic press, the potato is simply placed in the container and mashed by squeezing the levers.

Caution is advised if you want to squeeze with both hands. Then there is a danger of getting your fingers caught between the handles. So if you want to cook with your child, you should only give them soft foods to squash so that they can easily squash them with one hand.

Some appliances have a spacer between the handles so you can’t pinch your fingers.

What dishes can I prepare with a potato ricer?

There are many possible uses for a potato ricer. Depending on the model and type of perforated disc, different dishes can be prepared or cooked. For example:

  • Dumpling mass
  • Vegetable or fruit mash

Especially for spaetzle or spaghetti ice cream, however, you should make sure before buying whether the model is really suitable for this. Both ice cream and spaetzle are viscous and not solid like potatoes. The mushy mixture could ooze out the sides of the appliance instead of being squeezed through the recesses.

Even for elaborate dishes like dumplings, you should find out about the right potato ricer beforehand. Since you have to mash not only cooked but also raw potatoes for dumpling mass, you need a potato ricer that is sturdy enough for the harder potatoes.

As you can see in the table, a potato ricer is not really suitable for french fries. Most perforated discs have recesses that are too small to press the typical shape of French fries with them. In addition, French fries also require raw potatoes, which are harder to press through the press. To make your own fries at home, it is better to use a real French fry cutter. This presses the potato through a sharp grid instead of a sieve.

What are the alternatives to a potato ricer?

Depending on the dish for which you want to use the potato ricer, other kitchen utensils are also suitable for preparation. Fruit and vegetables, for example, could also be grated or mashed to make mush.

The classic masher is a good alternative to the potato ricer for preparing mashed potatoes.

Mashed potatoes can also be easily made with a classic potato masher. This is placed on the potatoes and pressed down. The advantage of the potato masher is that the potatoes can be mashed directly in the pot or a bowl. It is also usually easier to clean than the potato ricer. However, a masher is really only suitable for softly cooked potatoes. Vegetables or other harder foods can easily bend the masher.

The Flotte Lotte or masher can also be an alternative to the potato ricer. In a way, these are also potato presses, only with a crank, but the transitions between these kitchen appliances are fluid.


No well-equipped kitchen should be without a potato ricer. Anyone who likes to cook will enjoy this practical helper. Whether mashed potatoes, spaetzle, croquettes, gnocchi or spaghetti ice cream for dessert – the potato ricer supports you in many preparations.

Which potato ricer you should buy depends on what you want to make with it. Some models are better suited for spaetzle or ice cream than others.
