  • A pool ladder is important to ensure good and, above all, safe entry and exit from the pool. There are different types of pool ladders. You can choose between high pool ladders or built-in ladders. This mainly depends on the type of pool you want to buy or already have in your garden.
  • Materials play a big role in your choice of the right pool ladder for you. If you want a lightweight pool ladder, a plastic ladder is best suited. If you want your new pool ladder to be sturdy and robust, then a steel or stainless steel pool ladder is the better choice.
  • Besides the material, safety is also an important consideration when buying a new pool ladder. If you want the highest possible safety and children in particular often use your pool, then you should rather look for so-called safety pool ladders.

The Best Pool Ladder: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a pool ladder

Is a pool ladder suitable for every swimming pool?

Basically, no pool should be without a pool ladder. It helps you get in and out and offers you additional safety. In addition, a pool ladder keeps your swimming pool clean, as you do not enter the pool directly from the lawn or the pool surround and can place a foot basin in front of it.

Every pool ladder is not suitable for every pool. Therefore, you should check beforehand which ladder is interesting for you. There are high pool ladders and built-in pool ladders.

A ladder for high pools is suitable for you if your pool stands on the ground or is only partially embedded in the ground. The typical shape like a folding ladder guarantees safe entry and exit into your pool.

A built-in swimming pool ladder is interesting for you if your pool is completely embedded in the ground. The ladder is then simply hooked into the pool at the edge. The correct attachment is possible using various methods.

For example, you can set the handles in concrete or screw the entire ladder into the pool edge. This prevents the pool ladder from tipping over and ensures safe entry and exit.

What size pool ladder should I buy?

Most commercially available pool ladders have the same sizes, which are determined by the number of steps. There are the following common heights:

  • 76 cm
  • 91 cm
  • 107 cm
  • 120 cm

The deeper your pool, the more steps your pool ladder must have accordingly. Therefore, first measure the depth of your pool and, in the case of partially sunken pools, also take into account the pool edge. With this value, you can easily determine the number of steps you need for your new ladder and ultimately the right size.

What does a pool ladder cost?

Prices vary greatly depending on the equipment and quality. There are inexpensive entry-level models starting at 70 euros. The material, the height, but also the type of pool ladder have a particular influence on the price. Models made of a plastic-steel mix are usually somewhat cheaper than pure stainless steel pool ladders.

Variant Price
simple steel pool ladder from 70 euros
stainless steel pool ladder with plastic from 100 euros
pure stainless steel pool ladder from 200 euros

What is the alternative to a pool ladder?

The alternative to a pool ladder is a pool step. If you are planning a completely sunken concrete pool, this type of entry and exit should be your first choice. There are different types of pool stairs.

Whether you prefer a round Roman staircase or a wide staircase that extends over the entire side of your pool. There are hardly any limits. An additional handrail can make it much easier for you to get in and out.

The pool stairs are not only available in the solid construction version, but also as ready-made pool stairs made of plastic or metal. These look similar to a pool ladder. Their clear advantage is the significantly wider steps. These offer you more support and safety via the wider tread surface. This makes it particularly suitable for older people or children.

A major disadvantage is the considerably higher space requirement. Due to the wider steps, the stairs protrude much more into the pool. This ultimately leaves you with less space in the cool water.

Decision: What types of pool ladders are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, we distinguish between these types of pool ladders:

  • Steel pool ladder
  • Stainless steel pool ladder
  • Safety pool ladder

In the following, we explain the different types and their respective advantages and disadvantages. In this way, we want to help you find the pool ladder that suits you best.

What are the characteristics of a simple steel pool ladder and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A simple steel pool ladder usually consists of powder-coated steel tubes and plastic steps. These materials are corrosion-resistant, durable and therefore offer you longevity. In addition, they are quite cheap in comparison and therefore suitable for you if the budget is not too high.

  • low purchase price
  • high comfort
  • very resistant and durable
  • strong differences in quality
  • damage to the powder coating can lead to total loss

A major disadvantage, however, is the powder coating. If it is damaged by scratches, it can lead to corrosion. If you notice this quite late, it can lead to the pool ladder becoming unusable.

What are the characteristics of a stainless steel pool ladder and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A stainless steel ladder usually comes in two versions. On the one hand, the pool ladder made of pure stainless steel and on the other hand, the pool ladder made of a stainless steel-plastic mix.

Pool ladders made of pure stainless steel are robust, corrosion-resistant and will give you pleasure for a long time. They also offer a very high level of stability and have a high load-bearing capacity. One disadvantage is the higher price, but this is rather secondary due to the longevity.

  • very resistant and durable
  • easy to clean and stable
  • higher purchase price
  • stainless steel quality very variable

Pool ladders made of stainless steel and plastic are also robust, corrosion-resistant and will give you pleasure for a long time. However, the plastic steps do not offer the same stability and load-bearing capacity as a pure stainless steel pool ladder.

What distinguishes a safety pool ladder and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A safety ladder can be made of the above-mentioned materials: steel, stainless steel or a (stainless) steel-plastic mix. Accordingly, the previously mentioned characteristics also apply to the quality.

  • enormous safety
  • high comfort
  • very resistant and durable
  • Quality differences vary greatly
  • high price

A safety ladder is just the thing for you if you place an enormously high value on safety. The safety pool ladder is characterised by its extra safety features. In the following table you will find the safety features and what is hidden behind these features:

Feature Description
Safety steps The steps on the outside of the ladder can be removed, preventing children from entering the pool unsupervised.
Reinforced stability Additional stability makes the pool ladder particularly suitable for children, as stress even from frolicking or side impacts will not cause the pool ladder to be knocked over.

A safety pool ladder is therefore exactly the right thing for you if children often use your pool and you want to ensure more safety. In particular, the ability to fold down or remove the steps can be a lifesaver.

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate pool ladders

In the following, we will show you which criteria you can use to compare and evaluate pool ladders. This will make it easier for you to get an overview and decide on a suitable and effective device. In summary, these are the following criteria:

  • Material
  • Weight
  • Size

In the following, you can read about the respective criteria and find out why it makes sense for you to purchase a device based on the criteria or not.

Pool ladders are basically made of 3 different materials. These are briefly presented below.

Material variant Feature
Pool ladder made of plastic very light and very robust
Pool ladder made of steel robust and stable
Pool ladder made of stainless steel very robust and extremely stable

Plastic is the lightweight among the materials presented. It offers you a high degree of stability and is very durable yet easy to handle. If you have to move your pool ladder often, a plastic ladder is highly recommended.

One disadvantage, however, is usually stability. This is undoubtedly given, but a pool ladder made of steel or stainless steel still has a higher stability.

  • resistant and easy to clean
  • low weight
  • low price
  • not as stable as metal
  • can discolour

Steel is more stable than plastic. A steel pool ladder is durable and very strong. Most steel pool ladders are powder coated and have plastic steps. This makes the weight much less. However, the powder coating also has the disadvantage that it can come off or be damaged by scratches.

  • resistant and easy to clean
  • high stability
  • lower price than stainless steel
  • there is an increased risk of corrosion if the powder coating is damaged
  • higher price than plastic

If the steel comes into contact with water for a long time, it can lead to corrosion. This means that if corrosion damage is noticed late, your pool ladder quickly becomes unusable and must be disposed of. Therefore, check the pool ladder often for damage.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is naturally rust-free and highly resistant to corrosion. There are two variants of stainless steel pool ladders. One is the pure stainless steel pool ladder and the other is a stainless steel pool ladder with steps made of plastic.

  • very resistant and durable
  • easy to clean and stable
  • withstands various water additives
  • high weight
  • more expensive than other materials

The stainless steel pool ladder is the most stable form. However, it is also the most expensive type of pool ladder. If you have the budget for a stainless steel pool ladder, this material should be your first choice.

Basically, the pool ladder remains in the pool most of the time. However, depending on the structure, such as a pool deck or tarpaulin, you may have to take the pool ladder out of the water more often.

Therefore, you should carefully consider whether to choose a light or a heavy model. In the following table, we have briefly summarised the individual pool ladder variants and their weights.

Pool ladder variant Weight
Pool ladder made of plastic very light
Pool ladder made of steel-plastic mix light
Pool ladder made of steel heavy
Pool ladder made of stainless steel-plastic mix light
Pool ladder made of stainless steel heavy

Safety is probably the most important factor. Especially if children often want to go into the pool. Every pool ladder has advantages and disadvantages when it comes to safety. We would like to briefly introduce these to you below.

Safety pool ladder

This version is the safest and only choice if you have children in the household or if children are often in your pool. The safety pool ladder has special safety features that provide additional protection for you and your small and large pool guests.

For example, every safety pool ladder has a particularly high level of stability or removable or foldable steps, which are intended to prevent unintentional access to your pool, especially by small bathers.

Unfortunately, the term safety pool ladder is not sufficiently protected. Therefore, read the description carefully beforehand, compare and test a pool ladder best on site to ensure safety.

classic pool ladder

The classic pool ladder is normally also completely sufficient to safely get in and out of the pool. All pool ladders must be tested beforehand. Nevertheless, they do not guarantee the greatest possible safety. Therefore, you should always check beforehand whether the pool ladder you have chosen meets your safety requirements.

Facts worth knowing about pool ladders

How do I care for the pool ladder properly?

The pool ladder does not require any special or time-consuming care. You should only clean it of dirt from time to time. It is also important that you take your ladder out of the pool, if possible, when you are not using it for a while. This is especially true for steel pool ladders.

In addition, you should empty the pool over the winter anyway and store the ladder in a dry place to protect it from the weather, especially during the winter months. This way you are guaranteed to enjoy your pool ladder for a long time.

Of course, you don’t have to dismantle the stainless steel pool ladder that is permanently mounted in the pool edge. A stainless steel pool ladder for high pools can also remain outside over the winter. They can also withstand the weather in winter.

The mountable pool ladders are usually also of very high quality and are therefore also very weather-resistant. Nevertheless, you should clean them at least once a year with a commercially available stainless steel cleaner.

What do I have to bear in mind when using chlorine?

Chlorine is a chemical that, in the right concentration, keeps the water in your pool hygienically “clean” and free of algae. Correct chlorination of the pool water should not cause any problems.

Most pool ladders are compatible with chlorinated water. The plastic ladder usually has the least problems. These are very resistant and can even be used in salt water pools. However, they can also become porous if the chlorine content is too high.

Stainless steel and steel pool ladders are also resistant to chlorinated water, but here too the concentration or chlorine content is decisive. Steel ladders are completely unsuitable for salt water pools.
