Basically, the pocket spring mattress and the barrel pocket spring mattress only differ in the shape of the individual springs. While the normal pocket spring core has a waisted shape, the barrel pocket spring core is bulbous. This makes the barrel pocket spring mattress even more stable than ordinary pocket spring mattresses and consequently has a longer life.

How do I clean and care for my pocket spring mattress properly?

This prolongs the life of the mattress considerably. When turning the mattress, it is a good idea to wash the cover at the same time. You should do this about every 3 months, as everyone sweats during sleep and the cover is only protected by a thin sheet. However, you should refrain from vacuuming the pocket spring core or using cleaning agents on it.

When is the time to replace my mattress?

After a certain amount of time, every mattress should be replaced because it is no longer comfortable to lie on. It is also important to dispose of an old mattress for health reasons. Every mattress reaches the end of its life at some point. After five years at the latest, you should take a closer look at your mattress. Does it already show signs of dents? Is there visible damage such as mould or protruding springs on the mattress? Does the mattress smell musty? If so, it’s time for a new mattress!

The lifespan varies between 5-14 years, depending on the price range. Inexpensive mattresses should therefore be disposed of after 8 years at the latest. High-quality mattresses, on the other hand, can sometimes be used for 10-14 years. Proper care also plays an important role. If the mattress has never been turned and the cover has never been washed, for example because it is not removable, you should replace the mattress after about 5 years. The hygiene in the bed would no longer be sufficient, which can lead to illnesses in the long term.

Which slatted frame is suitable for my pocket spring mattress?

Simple slatted frames are particularly recommended for pocket spring mattresses. With an adjustable slatted frame, it can no longer adapt properly to the body. If the slatted frame is adjusted very much, the springs can be damaged. They would assume an unnatural position, which shortens the life span. Healthy and restful sleep is important for your body, but also for your psyche. Are you often tired in the morning, feel listless or don’t fall asleep at all? Often it is our behaviour that negatively influences our sleep. That’s why I’ve put together 5 tips for you to help you find restful sleep.

  1. Do not eat large meals before going to bed. This keeps the body too busy with digestion and prevents it from resting. Instead, eat a small, light meal such as a yoghurt or apple if you feel hungry before going to bed.
  2. Get enough exercise throughout the day. If all you do during the day is sit in your office and then go home and sit on the sofa in front of the TV after a hard day, this will not help you sleep. Physical exertion will do you good, and not just when you sleep. Why not go for a walk in the evening or ride your bike to work?
  3. Don’t take your mobile phone or laptop to bed with you. The blue light irritates your nerve cells. This makes you feel more awake. Your biological sleep rhythm is pushed back, as if you were having a coffee before going to bed. So better put away your mobile phone or laptop 1-2 hours before you go to bed. Instead, take a book to bed with you.
  4. End the day consciously. Don’t take negative thoughts to bed with you or think too much about the next day. Maybe it helps to write down your thoughts or important tasks to clear your head. Or take a bath, do a round of yoga or relaxation exercises. Anything goes as long as it helps you relax!
  5. Develop a sleep rhythm. It’s best to go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time in the morning. This way your body gets used to the times. Of course, this is not always compatible with your daily routine, but you should try to stick to these times as often as possible.
