Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a plancha grill
Who is a Plancha Grill suitable for?
You can prepare almost anything on this grill. Thanks to the high heat on the plancha, the pores of your grilled food close up immediately. The liquid then evaporates in the grilled food and your favourite type of meat, for example, becomes particularly tender. Especially for vegetarians, however, the Plancha grill, which after Spain has now finally found its way into the gardens at home, offers great advantages compared to a conventional grill.
Unlike a conventional grill, nothing can fall through the grill plate and aluminium foil and additional fats to prevent burning are a thing of the past.
In addition, all variations of fish can also be cooked wonderfully on the plancha grill. Unlike a charcoal grill, for example, where you find different temperatures on the grill grate, the heat is distributed equally on the plancha. Here, too, you will no longer need the aluminium foil and can easily remove the fish from the plate without additional oil.
Which Plancha grill plates are available?
First of all, there is the Plancha grill plate made of enamelled cast iron. This variant is especially recommended for home use, as the heat is evenly distributed and stored really well. Moreover, you will notice that cleaning and maintenance is very easy and does not take much time. If you have somewhat higher demands, we can recommend the Plancha grill plates made of pressed steel. This material stores the heat even better and longer than enamelled cast iron. On the other hand, cleaning and maintenance is much more time-consuming and it is possible that residues burn onto the plate. Plancha grill plates made of aluminium are an inexpensive alternative. These non-stick coated plates have a very good heat distribution, but residues burn onto the plate very quickly. You will still see this even after a lengthy cleaning process. Finally, there are grill plates made of stainless steel, but we can only recommend them to you to a limited extent. Without additional oil or fat, your food will stick to the grill, which means that one of the basic virtues of the plancha grill is lost. Apart from that, the stainless steel discolours very quickly and becomes unsightly.
How much does a Plancha grill cost?
|Plancha electric barbecue||Between 100 and 500 euros.|
|Plancha gas barbecue||Between 200 and 1,000 euros.|
Electric plancha grills can be purchased at a lower price, starting at 100 euros. More luxurious models, however, can quickly cost four, five hundred euros or even more. Gas-powered plancha barbecues can also be purchased for as little as 200 euros, but here you will soon reach somewhat higher price regions than with the electric version. You can find gas grills for 800 euros and more. The performance also plays a decisive role here. Especially with electric grills, you will find very inexpensive models, but most of them have less than 2000 watts.
To really achieve the desired 300 degrees and more, you should therefore go for a plancha grill with at least 2400 watts.
Of course, there are exceptions, which are expensive due to various special designs, whereby the manufacturers generally charge very different prices. Quality features such as the grill plate or the equipment, which we will explain to you in the buying criteria, are sometimes decisive for these price differences.
What alternatives are there to a plancha grill?
The grill plate is the cheapest alternative to the plancha grill. Not to be disregarded, as the handling is very simple. Simply place the plate on the grill grate of your barbecue – and you’re ready to go.
The absolute classic among barbecue fans. Many swear by the typical smoky aroma that charcoal gives to meat, fish or vegetables. This special taste is said to be unsurpassable.
A typical gas grill offers similar advantages to the plancha grill. No smoke or soot combined with a quick heat-up made this variant gain popularity.
Decision: What types of plancha grills are there and which one is right for you?
If you want to buy a plancha grill, there are two types to choose from:
- Plancha gas grill
- Plancha electric grill
The differences are mainly in the handling and the possible uses. Otherwise, both models are offered with the same equipment options. Both options have their advantages, but also disadvantages. Depending on which aspects are more important to you, a different type of plancha grill is suitable for you. In this chapter we would like to make the decision easier for you.
What distinguishes a gas-powered plancha grill and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
With a gas plancha grill, as the name suggests, you need a gas bottle to power the gas burners of the grill. Propane or butane gas is usually recommended. Since these gas bottles are usually a bit bulky, this type of plancha grill is only suitable to a limited extent for use directly at the dining table. In addition, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions, as most models are not recommended for use indoors anyway.
A gas-powered plancha grill can be used flexibly outdoors. You can use the grill anywhere with the help of the gas bottle and are not tied to a power connection or similar. Thanks to the higher power, gas barbecues are usually hotter than electric barbecues and require less time. In addition, gas plancha grills are available in larger versions and are therefore also suitable for large groups of people.
What distinguishes an electric plancha grill and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The electric counterpart is perfect for use indoors, or directly at the dining table. This is not only due to the absence of a gas bottle, but also to the normally more compact design of the electric grill. To get started with the electric plancha grill, you only need a 230-volt power connection.
While you have an enormous choice of different models for gas barbecues, the range is more limited for barbecues powered by electricity. But here, too, you will find similar equipment factors as with gas barbecues, which we will look at in more detail in the buying criteria.
Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate plancha grills
In the following, we would like to show you criteria that you can use to decide between the many possible plancha grills. These include:
- Grill plate
- Type of heating
As already mentioned, grill plates are available in a wide variety of materials, which differ in terms of heat distribution and retention, as well as ease of maintenance. You can read about the most common variants and their individual advantages and disadvantages in our guide. Here we would like to give you just one more tip: It’s better to save on additional gadgets and buy good quality grill plates instead. Stainless steel and aluminium plates are cheaper, but can only be recommended to a limited extent.
For a really good plancha grill, you should go for cast iron or pressed steel, the grill will then give you pleasure for longer and justify the higher price.
Type of heating
As already explained in the decision section, there are basically two types of plancha grill, which differ in the type of heating – on the one hand, grills powered by electricity, and on the other hand, gas grills. Electric Plancha grills are easy to use, after connecting the power cable to a socket you can already switch on the heating elements. With a gas barbecue, on the other hand, you need a gas bottle including a pressure reducer. These plancha grills are usually supplied with a separate ignition button, or an ignition button for the gas burners already integrated in the regulator. However, some models also require additional batteries for this. So while electric grills can score with indoor grilling, the gas grill can convince with the cheaper heating method – gas is usually cheaper than electricity. As a brief incentive, you can take a look at some delicacies á la plancha here:
To reach the desired 300 degrees Celsius, you need a plancha grill with a high output. This is where electric plancha grills can have deficits. In online shops, you can often find grills powered by electricity for 50 euros or less. Even if these offers seem tempting, in addition to the quality of the grill plate, you should also pay attention to the wattage. In order to do justice to the function of your plancha grill, the model of your choice should at least have more than 2000 watts, better still more than 2400. Basically, the following applies here: The higher the power, the better the grilling process.
Since Plancha gas barbecues are only suitable for outdoor use, there are special versions of some models with a barbecue trolley and a lid. This not only improves the appearance, but also offers additional protection. Your barbecue trolley should have wheels so that you can easily position it in the garden or on the balcony. Furthermore, the trolley must have enough storage space for the gas bottle.
If you want to leave your barbecue trolley outside, make sure it is made of weather-resistant material and cover it with a protective cover. The cover also gives you the opportunity to protect your plancha grill plate from the weather. The cover also helps to prevent splashes when grilling.
Plancha grills basically consist of two parts: the housing and the grill plate. While you will find all the important information about the different grill plates above, we will now turn our attention to the housing and its additional features. First of all, some models have an elevation all around. This ensures that no liquids can run off the grill plate. Models without a lid often also have a splash guard. All plancha grills have a collection container that is connected to the grill plate by a drain. This container collects grilling liquids or water during cleaning. If possible, buy a grill with the largest possible collection container, as emptying the container during operation is not possible due to the high heat. Some plancha grill models also have adjustable feet for a secure stand. This allows you to adapt your grill perfectly to the ground and ensure a good grip.
Trivia: Facts worth knowing about the topic of plancha grill
How do I burn in my Plancha Grill?
You only need to burn in your Plancha Grill if you have chosen a non-enamelled material. This material requires baking because it creates a protective layer, also called patina. This protective layer serves on the one hand as a rust protection and on the other hand as a non-stick coating. This means that no food residues are deposited on your plancha grill plate. There are various methods for burning in your Plancha grill. Here we present one of the most popular variants with lots of oil, vegetables and salt:
- First heat the cooking oil on the plancha, calmly more than usual when cooking, with salt and vegetables. You can use potato slices or cucumber peelings for this.
- Fry the mixture until the vegetables and the plancha are black. Discard the vegetables, as they are no longer edible.
- Now give the plancha enough time to cool down. Then you can clean it with hot water. Never use washing-up liquid or detergent, as this would damage the patina.
What accessories do I need?
Not only the essential factors that are decisive for the grill itself should be included in your purchase decision. In addition to some special features, such as a splash guard, which we have explained in the buying criteria, you should also pay attention to accessories. Additional tools such as a grill spatula or grill utensils can make both grilling and cleaning easier. So if you want to buy a plancha grill, don’t forget the necessary accessories.
How do I clean my Plancha grill properly?
You don’t need much to clean your Plancha grill. If it is normally dirty, it is enough to let the grill cool down briefly and clean the still slightly warm plate with hot water. The dirt can be easily removed with a soft sponge or ordinary kitchen roll. You can carefully remove coarse food residues with a grill spatula. For stubborn dirt, you should ask a specialist shop for special cleaning sprays or cleaning wool. After cleaning, you should cover your Plancha grill. This way you can ensure that the plate is not exposed to external influences and at the same time increase its durability. For clarification, you can see the really simple cleaning here:
