There is nothing like being in the middle of the hot season, and not having anything to cool ourselves with. That’s when fans come into play, particularly pedestal fans, which are the most common thanks to their practicality.

Continuing with our fan guides, we have tried in the following, based on our research, to address and make you mention the most important features and functions that a pedestal fan should have and we hope that with this, we can make it easier for you to choose the most suitable one according to your needs.

Summary

  • Pedestal fans are designed to be used in medium to large rooms where there is a lot of furniture or obstructions at floor level that could limit air circulation.
  • These fans can generally be powerful and their models can have 3 or 5 blades. They are also one of the best known and most used variants of fans, as they can also be portable, although this is not their main function as they can also be heavy.
  • Aesthetically they are not the most eye-catching, although in their latest models and in their higher ranges they have been improving their designs a little.

What are pedestal fans and what are their advantages?

Pedestal fans have the main feature of having the fan head mounted to a base that is placed on the floor. This base raises the fan so that it can circulate the air from a medium height and almost all models have a rotating or oscillating head. It is also one of the most popular models.

The oscillation of the head allows the airflow to be directed to various points in a given space as long as they are at the angle of rotation. This does not improve the air circulation within a room, but it does produce a cooling sensation directly on the person on whom the airflow is blowing as it evaporates perspiration and humidity, and therefore partly displaces the heat generated.

Advantages
  • They can be powerful
  • They circulate a fairly high volume of air
  • The airflow is not limited by obstructions on the floor
  • Generally its head is oscillatory for greater reach
Disadvantages
  • Aesthetically it is one of the least pleasant
  • It takes up space and obstructs a little in a room
  • You must be careful not to throw them away because of their height

Pedestal fans: What should you pay attention to?

As we have mentioned for other types of fans, including the pedestal fan, there are not many factors that make a major difference between different models. The differences nowadays lie in features or extras, such as remote control, different silencing technologies, etc.

However, there is one particular issue that we would like to clarify for you, and that is that many times and especially in this type of fan, they are sold in either 3 or 5 blades, after which many people wonder which one will be the best; there are usually small differences between the two.

3 blades 5 blades
They can make more noise 3 blades On the contrary, they tend to be quieter 5 blades
They weigh less and their motor makes less effort to move 3 blades 3 blades They can weigh a little more and need more powerful motors 5 blades
They move more air flow 3 blades They move less air 5 blades

Of course, with new technologies, these differences have become smaller or no longer have a major impact on performance, although in more basic or less sophisticated designs they may still exist.

Aesthetically they are not the most eye-catching, although in their latest models and in their higher ranges they have been improving their designs.

Purchasing Criteria: factors that allow you to compare pedestal fan models

It is important to know certain characteristics of a pedestal fan and to evaluate them so that when you are in doubt between 2 or several models you can make the best possible decision. Therefore, we will mention some of the most important ones:

Speed levels

They usually have at least 3 speeds, and some models may have more, which gives greater versatility to the amount of air to circulate. If you are in front of a fan without more than two speeds, don’t even think about it!

Number of blades

As mentioned above, the number of blades can influence the power and airflow that the fan is able to move, but it will also influence how quiet the fan is, generally 5 blades are less noisy and more stable, but move slightly less air.

Oscillation

A pedestal fan that doesn’t oscillate? I hope you’re not even considering it! Oscillation is a basic function of these fans and what varies is in the number of degrees. As a personal recommendation, I consider 90° to be sufficient, as some oscillate up to 180° but take too long to return to you.

Power

This factor will essentially depend on the room in which you want to place the fan, as a fan with too much power for a small room will be overpowered and underpowered for a large room. You can consider or take as a reference point that a medium power fan can range from 45W to 60W, beyond that, we are talking about high power fans, so this can be a very useful parameter.
