The Best Monitor Stand: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a monitor stand
What is a monitor stand?
Simple stands are easy to find and don’t cost much. You need little or no advice when buying one. On the other hand, they usually offer nothing more than raising the height of the monitor.
Stands with multiple functions are a little more complex. You can swivel and rotate some of them to get the perfect viewing angle. With this type of stand, you should get some information and advice to avoid making a wrong purchase.
A monitor stand can give you many new options in terms of height and viewing angle
Ordering online
Basically, buying online has a few advantages. Among other things, you have a huge choice between different dealers. In addition, there is usually an exact description of important factors, such as size or weight.
Furthermore, almost every product has a certain number of customer reviews that you can refer to, even if there are cases of false or bought reviews on online portals.
One disadvantage could be that you cannot directly grasp your monitor stand haptically. This can lead to you imagining the purchased product to be somewhat different than it looks in the end. In addition, there are staff in a shop who can advise you directly. You also have a delivery time that you have to wait for.
Electrical retailer
It’s not directly an electronic device, but it has so much to do with it that most electronics stores also have monitor stands in their assortment. Here you can also look at your stand directly to get a more accurate picture. In addition, you have shop staff who can advise you and you can take your product straight away. So you don’t have to wait for a delivery time.
But of course you need time and a way to get to an electronics shop. The knowledge of the staff is often rather limited, which is even more true for customer reviews online, but there you have more people from whom you can get a review. In addition, the selection is smaller, since not every model is always carried by every shop.
Used
Of course, you can also buy a monitor stand second-hand. These are usually not in too bad a condition. In addition, you have the advantage of a large selection. You can often decide whether you want to collect the product yourself after purchase or whether it should be delivered and you buy the stand from someone who has used it himself and therefore knows more about the device.
Unfortunately, you can’t be sure who you are buying the stand from and whether it is already a bit broken. You often have the option of a refund, but unfortunately this always costs time. You also have a certain restriction in your choice, especially if you only want to order from one or two portals, because they don’t always buy a product that matches your idea.
When buying a monitor mount, it is best to look at all three options to get the best comparison
Where should you put your monitor?
If you find that your desk is too small, you might want to consider wall-mounting it. This can save you a lot of space. However, you should make sure you know how much your mount can take and whether your wall is stable enough, otherwise you could easily have an accident.
Decision: What types of monitor stands are there and which is the right one for you?
There are a huge number of different models of monitor stands. All of them also have a lot of different functions. We have decided to divide them into three types and present them to you in as much detail as possible.
- Stationary
- Mobile
- Mobile
Stationary
This is probably the simplest form of monitor mount. However, it can also come in many different forms. The simplest of these is a kind of pedestal. A simple elevation of the screen for a better viewing angle.
The more complex version is a pedestal with a surface underneath that can be pulled out to place the keyboard. This is quite handy if you want to save space as you can just slide the keyboard away when not in use.
The third type is the wall mount. It is screwed to the wall and then the monitor is mounted on it. A simple wall mount usually just consists of a plate that is screwed to the wall. The more complex type of wall mount can be found in the second point.
Movable
A movable monitor mount has several joints that allow you to change the angle of your screen at any time. This type also comes in different models with different functions.
The first type is a swivel arm that is attached to the table. This is easy to attach either with screws or, on some models, with a simple clamp. The swivel arm is flexible and offers you many angles in which you can set up your monitor.
The second type is very similar but is mounted on the wall and comes with even more options. With this type of wall mount, you can freely determine the angle and thus have more options. There are also different swivel arms but also mounts with a kind of rail system.
The problem with movable monitor stands is that they offer more contact surfaces. The joints are probably the most sensitive and the more of them your stand has, the quicker it can break down.
Mobile
Mobile monitor mounts are usually very high and have wheels with which they can be moved around the room. This makes them very flexible, but they also take up a lot of space.
There are fewer different types of mobile monitor stands. Most are high poles on which a platform stands. The monitor is then attached to this platform. This is a simple solution to give your PC monitor a little more freedom of movement.
For example, there are models with height adjustment. This makes it even easier for the stand to fit anywhere. Another extra would be a small shelf on the pole, for example for your mouse or a remote control. The problem with this type, however, is stability. Especially if the stand stands freely in the room.
Type | Features(in mm) |
---|---|
Stationary | Easy to mount, Does not offer any great functions except height adjustment, Usually very simple design |
Mobile | Offers many functions such as angle adjustment, Has several mounting options (e.g. wall), Is somewhat more fragile due to many joints |
Mobile | Offers a lot of mobility while taking up very little space, Is very stable, Has a maximum of one height adjustment, Is somewhat more susceptible to tipping over |
Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate monitor stands.
Here we want to introduce you to factors that you can use to evaluate and compare monitor stands. We have decided to divide the whole thing into the following groups:
- Size
- Weight
- Load capacity
- Functionality
Below you can read about the respective criteria and find out why it makes sense for you to buy a device based on the criteria or not.
Size
This is a factor that is probably important to you, as people usually want to waste as little space as possible. Therefore, you should measure the space where your stand will be placed and adjust your purchase accordingly.
Of course, a stand on wheels wastes a lot of space, but you should be aware of this when buying such a model. If space consumption is still important to you, you should make sure that the wheel frame itself is not too big, as this often takes up the most space and makes the stand quite bulky.
With wall mounting, space should rarely be a problem, as wasted space is minimised. If you buy a stand for your table, you should make sure that it is not too big for it, but otherwise this type is also quite space-saving.
Weight
Weight is also an important factor in a monitor mount, but it depends on the model whether heavy or light is the better choice.
When it comes to weight, a monitor stand on edges should weigh more than other types. This is because it should have a good hold and not tip over easily. So you should be aware that if you want a light model, one on wheels might not be your cup of tea.
For wall-mounting it is the other way round, because here the stand itself should ideally weigh very little, since the weight of the monitor itself is also involved. So you should always use a stable wall and minimise the load.
Load capacity
The load capacity is a very important point for a monitor stand. It must be able to hold the monitor itself. Before buying, you should always check how much your monitor weighs and how much you can load the stand with.
With the mobile version on wheels, this point is rather unimportant. Here, the size of the monitor is more important, as the mount could tip over at a certain point.
For the wall mount, the load capacity is much more important. The entire weight of the monitor rests on it and if the mount is too weak, it can easily lead to a crash. You should also always check your wall, because if it has too many cavities, a stable mount won’t be of much help.
The required load capacity can vary from monitor to monitor, so it is very important to find out beforehand
Functionality
This point is important if you want more from your mount than just a certain elevation. There are many ways in which a mount can provide a better viewing angle.
The wheeled version has limited swivelling, but offers a wide variety of positions. This type of stand is very mobile and versatile, as you can also place it in some narrow places.
The wall and table version is more about the viewing angle. Here you have the option of using a swivel arm that is either attached to the table or to the wall and offers a huge amount of freedom in terms of the set-up angle.
Facts worth knowing about monitor stands
How safe is a monitor stand?
Often, when buying a monitor stand, the question is whether it will hold and not collapse at some point. This is especially a problem with brackets that are mounted on the wall and have many joints.
In general, you should not worry about the bracket breaking down. Manufacturers usually include detailed instructions on how to attach the stand to the wall. However, you should still make sure that your wall is suitable.
If you have a wall with a lot of cavities, it could happen that your moor stand loses its hold at some point.

You should worry even less about the joints. Complete failure is very rare, and if you notice that the joints are already weakening after a short time, you should contact the manufacturer and in some cases get a new device.
You should also avoid buying products with joints that are too cheap, otherwise the safety can actually decrease.
How can you make your own monitor stand?
You can easily build a simple monitor stand yourself. It is best to use wood. Unfortunately, it is rather difficult to make a swivelling version yourself.
There are lots of tutorials online for simple pedestals on which you can place your monitor. Unfortunately, the whole thing doesn’t go much further than that. Some creative minds will show you how to make a wall mount out of an old pipe, for example, but these are almost always bound to an angle. Building a swivelling stand requires a lot of patience and skill, which is why it is probably easier to buy one.
