  • Mixing bowls are an important accessory for kitchen machines. They are available in glass, plastic or stainless steel.
  • Glass bowls are decorative, but bulky and fragile. Plastic bowls or those made of stainless steel are usually easier to obtain.
  • Not every mixing bowl fits every food processor. You usually have to buy a mixing bowl from the manufacturer of your appliance.

What material is a mixing bowl made of?

Mixing bowls are usually made of plastic or stainless steel. Glass or aluminium is also often used.

How much do mixing bowls for food processors cost?

The price of mixing bowls varies greatly. You should plan on at least five, but more likely 15. The cost of a mixing bowl depends on various factors. Large mixing bowls are not always more expensive. Shape, material and manufacturer usually play the greater role.

Replacement KitchenAid bowls are often more expensive than those from other manufacturers. It is often worth taking a look at mixing bowls for previous models. With many suppliers, these are cheaper and still compatible with newer appliances.

As a rule, mixing bowls are made of plastic or stainless steel. Glass or aluminium is also often used.

How many litres does a mixing bowl have?

Mixing bowls come in many different sizes. Small bowls hold about half a litre, while the largest models have a volume of up to seven litres. More important than the question of how much a mixing bowl can hold is the capacity and connection of your machine. Not every food processor can handle very small or very large bowls.

Many mixing bowls have a capacity of around three to four litres and can be used flexibly. You can often find out how many litres a mixing bowl has on the bottom of the bowl or on the packaging.

To find out which mixing bowl is suitable for your food processor, check the machine’s instruction manual.

Can I use any bowl with my food processor?

Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no. The mixing tools need enough space – or if the bowl is too large, they will not reach the rim. Therefore, make sure that the mixing bowl not only fits into your food processor, but also fits it. In addition, manufacturers often use different connections and holders.

Even if a mixing bowl fits in your machine and the tools also fit, you should definitely buy a bowl that is suitable for your food processor. If you don’t, your machine may not start or the bowl may not have a grip and be “thrown” away.

Decision: What types of mixing bowls are there and which is the right one for you?

Basically, you can distinguish between three types of mixing bowls:

  • Stainless steel
  • Plastic
  • Glass

Due to different uses and preferences, a certain mixing bowl is best suited for you. The different areas of application result in different advantages and disadvantages for each mixing bowl.

Material Properties
Stainless steel Visually chic, Odourless
Plastic Simple and lightweight, Short shelf life
Glass Scratch-resistant

In the following sections, we would like to introduce you to the three different types. We will also briefly explain the differences between them to help you find out which mixing bowl is right for you. The advantages and disadvantages of each type are clearly presented for comparison.

How do you use a stainless steel mixing bowl and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Stainless steel mixing bowls are becoming more and more popular, and not only because of their timeless and beautiful appearance. Stainless steel bowls are heavier than those made of plastic, for example. Therefore, they have a better stability, which is especially advantageous when mixing with a hand mixer.

Did you know that stainless steel mixing bowls hardly wear out? Stainless steel mixing bowls are usually rather unpopular because they are expensive and heavy. Most customers go for a plastic bowl because they often offer everything you need. Stainless steel, however, is the most hygienic material and is also easy to clean. Even after repeated use, it still looks like new.

Stainless steel bowls absorb cold and heat very well. This can make some work steps, such as whipping cream, much easier, as cream can be whipped to a stiff consistency better in a cool mixing bowl. However, the absorption of heat or cold can also be a disadvantage. A dough needs more time to rise in a cold bowl.

Many mixing bowls made of stainless steel have a so-called pouring aid. This is a beak on the edge of the bowl. This allows particularly liquid doughs to be poured off in a controllable way. It facilitates pouring into the baking dish and is especially recommended for portioning.

  • Beautiful appearance
  • Firm stand
  • Odourless
  • Conducts heat and cold
  • Very loud when whipping

How do you use a plastic mixing bowl and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Plastic mixing bowls are the most commonly used. They are nice and light and come in many different designs. However, due to the low weight, you should pay attention to the stability of the bowl, especially when using a hand mixer. You may need to hold the mixing bowl with one hand to prevent it from tipping over or sliding away.

However, most plastic bowls stand on a rubber ring that provides the necessary grip. In addition, the contents of the bowl also increase the stability. Plastic bowls are available in many different colours and shapes. The different shapes in particular can make some work steps easier, such as whipping cream. This can be done more quickly in a narrow and high mixing bowl than in a wide one. Recently, plastic bowls have also been available with lids.

This means that any splashes of batter that occur when mixing with a hand mixer are caught by the lid. This saves you the trouble of cleaning the wall and your clothes. Due to the plasticisers contained in the plastics, the bowls become unsightly after a while, discolour and absorb odours. The resulting scratches are not only unsightly, but also unhygienic, as dough residues can get stuck here.

  • Lightweight
  • Splash guard available
  • Unhygienic
  • Less grip

How do you use a glass mixing bowl and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Glass mixing bowls are the least commonly used. They are made of transparent, robust glass. However, glass is not shatterproof: hard knocks or a fall can quickly break the bowl. In addition, glass bowls are quite unwieldy due to the heavy glass. On the other hand, they have good stability and are guaranteed not to slip when stirring with a hand mixer.

Glass is scratch-resistant: this means that even when using a hand mixer, no unsightly or unhygienic scratches can occur in the glass.

  • Good grip
  • Scratch-resistant
  • Can break
  • Heavy own weight

Buying criteria: You can compare and evaluate mixing bowls based on these factors

Mixing bowls are usually made of plastic or stainless steel. Glass bowls are only available from a few suppliers. Plastic is robust and easy to clean, but discolours quickly. Mixing bowls made of this material are usually the cheapest. Stainless steel bowls have an appealing look, are robust and light except for the stainless steel.

Unfortunately, they scratch quickly and are somewhat more expensive. Bowls made of glass for kitchen machines are often expensive, have a high weight and are not available for every model. However, they are quite decorative and also good for serving.

The size of the mixing bowl depends primarily on your needs. If you prepare food more for yourself or generally only in smaller quantities, you should choose a small mixing bowl with a volume of up to three litres. If you often whip cream or eggs, you should also choose a compact bowl. For dough or large quantities of ingredients, you should opt for a larger bowl.

With a capacity of five litres, you can prepare or cook meals for several people and even let yeast dough rise as well as mix it.

Size use
Small bowl preparation of small dishes, whipping cream
Medium bowl for light use
Large bowl for regular use and preparation of large dishes

Remember that not only does the bowl need to fit your food processor, but you also need to store it in your kitchen (or wherever else you have space).

When choosing the right mixing bowl, the manufacturer plays a big role. Often, spare parts from different manufacturers cannot be combined with each other. Even if they are similar or identical in terms of other attributes, they often do not fit kitchen machines from other manufacturers.

For example, a five-litre bowl from Bosch cannot be replaced with a six-litre mixing bowl from Beem. If you buy a bowl from the manufacturer of your food processor, there is a good chance that they will be compatible. However, always pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Don’t forget that the bowl not only has to fit your food processor, but you also have to store it in your kitchen (or wherever else you have space).

First and foremost, a mixing bowl is a tool for which design plays a subordinate role. However, if you have your food processor in constant view or want to serve prepared desserts and sauces in the mixing bowl, the look should also appeal to you. Bowls made of glass or stainless steel have a design that many people find extremely elegant. They look high-quality and simple. Glass bowls look particularly good when serving.

You should bear in mind that stainless steel bowls scratch quickly. On the inside, ingredients and mixing tools can damage the surface; on the outside, unsightly scratches can quickly appear due to storage and transport. If you also want to use your mixing bowl for serving, you should also make sure that the bowl has two handles or – depending on what you want to serve – at least one handle. The latter not only makes it easier to remove from the food processor, but also to “handle” at the table.

No matter which design you choose, it is important to clean the bowl after each use. Before buying, make sure that the mixing bowl is dishwasher safe.

Facts worth knowing about mixing bowls

Are plastic bowls carcinogenic?

Plastic mixing bowls are not carcinogenic. Many plastic bowls contain plasticisers. These substances prevent the material from becoming brittle and breaking down. One of these plasticisers, bisphenol A – BPA for short – is suspected of having hormonal effects and influencing the development of children and the fertility of adults.

For this reason, most mixing bowls are made without BPA. Most manufacturers provide information about this on the packaging. Look for the number indicated in a triangle on the bottom of the bowl. 1, 2, 4 and 5 are food grade, 7 and 3 should be avoided.

When do I use a high mixing bowl?

Mixing bowls that are taller than they are wide are particularly good for whisking liquids. In shallow bowls, the liquid tends to spread out and the tools can’t work properly. in higher bowls, the stirring bars get to the liquid and it can expand upwards.

Which food processor has a glass bowl?

KitchenAid food processors often come with a glass mixing bowl.

Note that glass bowls are very delicate and you have to be careful with them.

For many food processors, you can buy the decorative glass bowls separately and use them alternately or instead of the standard bowl.
