Buying and evaluation criteria for magnesium spray

When buying a magnesium spray, you can pay attention to various aspects, such as:

By making the right choice for you, you can save money and also ensure that you don’t give your body anything it doesn’t need. Therefore, always look for high quality and ask to see the manufacturer’s certificates if necessary.

Handy spray bottle

You should make sure that the spray bottle is handy and of good quality. This way you can use it again and again and do something for the environment. We recommend glass spray bottles, which are not only handy but also durable.

Suitable as a bath additive

Especially for muscle tension, it is an advantage if you can use your magnesium spray as a bath additive. So make sure that the spray is versatile so that you can not only spray it on the painful area, but that it can also be used in other ways.

Type of spray bottle

There is a distinction between a glass and a plastic spray bottle. Each of the two spray bottles has advantages and disadvantages. You have to decide for yourself, depending on your taste, one or the other type is more suitable for you.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about magnesium spray answered in detail

In order to inform you comprehensively about the effectiveness of magnesium sprays and to give you an understanding of the current state of science, we have summarised all the important information in the following sections.

What is a magnesium spray and how does it work?

A magnesium spray is an oil-based medicine used to treat sore muscles, tension, muscle cramps and other similar symptoms. The use of a spray is especially recommended for children and infants because of its simplicity.
Magnesium is a true all-rounder among the minerals (4).

According to the forum contribution by Prof. Dr. Ingrid Gerhard, the transdermal application with magnesium chloride and water has a harmless effect on pregnancy and breastfeeding. From her professional experience as a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics, it offers an optimal solution against magnesium deficiency (5). It is important to know that magnesium is vital, as the metabolism would not function without this mineral.

  • Effect 1: Magnesium stimulates the energy metabolism.
  • Effect 2: In addition, the vital mineral is important for the permeability and stability of cell membranes and influences nerve impulses.
  • Effect 3: Magnesium is particularly important for strong bones and muscle function. A magnesium deficiency can lead to cramps and osteoporosis (6).

When and for whom is it useful to take magnesium spray?

A magnesium deficiency can not only be compensated for by various preparations, but nutrition also plays an important role. (7) Magnesium can be found in the following foods, among others:

  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Legumes
  • Cereals (8)

According to the Magnesium Health Institute, magnesium is one of the three vital components for human health, along with oxygen and water.

Women especially suffer from the side effects of severe magnesium deficiency during menstruation, pregnancy and breastfeeding. This study also shows the effect of taking antacids on magnesium levels. The permanent neutralisation of gastric acid leads to hypomagnesaemia. The transdermal application of magnesium oil counteracts the decrease of magnesium concentration in the blood (9). Magnesium has many different effects, which we have already explained to you in more detail in this article. However, it is mainly used for muscle tension or cramps. The transdermal application of the spray has the advantage that it is easy and quick to use. No other remedy can relieve muscular problems as quickly and reliably as the external application of magnesium (10).

How much does a magnesium spray cost?

Here, too, there are different price ranges. On average, the price is between 9.00 € and 40.00 €, but it also depends on the design, quantity and container. The following table should give you a rough overview:
Type price range
Spray bottle with 100 to 300 ml 9.00 to 37.00 €
Bulk bottle with 500 ml 11.00 € to 35.00 €
Bulk bottle with 1,000 ml 16.00 € to 40.00 €

As you can see, the prices can be quite different, but you can get a good magnesium spray for 15.00 €.

Where can I buy a magnesium spray?

You can buy a magnesium spray online as well as in various pharmacies, drugstores or specialist shops.

You can take a look at the following online shops:

  • amazon.com
  • docmorris.com
  • shop-apotheke.de

They offer you the opportunity to compare different sprays directly with each other. This way, you can choose and buy the magnesium spray that suits you best. In a pharmacy, however, you will receive additional advice, even if the prices are usually more expensive.

What are the alternatives to magnesium spray?

There are also some alternatives to a magnesium spray. The following table gives you an overview of the three alternatives.

  • Magnesium gel: Can be used in the form of a gel and is often used for massages or skin care
  • Magnesiumflakes: These can be used as a bath additive. Together with the warmth of the water, magnesium flakes can help to relax the muscles. The magnesium absorption increases disproportionately with the concentration(11)
  • Magnesium peeling: This is a coarser gel for cleansing skin care.

Depending on the area of application, there are different alternatives to a magnesium spray.

How should a magnesium spray be dosed?

An investigation by the consumer organisation Verbraucherzentrale in October 2016 showed that 64% of the magnesium-containing dietary supplements examined contained a higher amount than the maximum daily dose of 250 mg recommended by the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in dietary supplements (12).

To achieve the best possible effect, the magnesium spray can be dosed as follows:

  • Apply undiluted between 5 to 20 sprays to the skin
  • Avoid sensitive areas such as nipples or fresh scars
  • Spray directly onto the painful area and distribute well. Then massage in briefly.
  • Feel free to wash off any remaining oil, but it does not cause any damage to the skin. May, however, cause discolouration of clothing.

If you follow the above points, nothing will stand in the way of a healing effect. However, make sure that you do not use the spray too often. There is nothing to stop you from using the spray daily, for example after sports. Particularly with age, the absorption capacity gradually decreases, but discuss this with your doctor (13). It is important to know that magnesium plays a large and important role in the human body and that the right dose can prevent diseases such as Alzheimer’s or migraines (13).

What are the side effects?

The following side effects can occur with the wrong dosage:

  • Side effect1: Gastrointestinal complaints
  • Side effect2: Diarrhoea
  • Side effect 3: Complaints of the nervous system and heart due to exhaustion, tiredness and feeling of weakness

If you experience any of these side effects, stop using magnesium spray immediately. If there is no improvement, inform a doctor.
