The Best Magic Box: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a magic kit for children

What is a magic kit for children?

It is a container: a box, a case, a cage – that contains objects and instructions to perform magic tricks. There are also magic boxes with instructions on DVD or additionally in videos on the internet.

By magic here we mean the art of deception and disappearance that gives the audience the feeling that something supernatural is happening before their eyes.

It is an ancient art – just look at the list of the most famous magicians at Wiki in the further sources!

But we want to make one thing clear: There are no extra tricks for children. A child as well as an adult can perform a magic trick.

The only difference between children’s tricks and magic tricks for adults is the more child-friendly presentation, processing and explanation. Other distinctions, such as the degree of difficulty, are not only linked to age.

Magic boxes were first mentioned at the beginning of the 19th century. Not in the form of a box, but a collection of utensils for performing magic. Many present-day magicians who practise this art as a profession started out with such a magic box.

Classic equipment

Almost every magic box contains the following accessories: cups, balls, rings, a magic wand, cards, a magic cloth, a false fingertip, a rope, dice, play money and coins.

Special equipment

For individually devised tricks, there are also special items in some boxes. For example, there are magic boxes with floating bank cards or coins that you can pierce with your finger. So look at the features of several magic boxes before choosing!

What is a magic box best for?

Magic boxes are ideal for children to practice patience, concentration and understanding complex processes in a playful way. In addition, your child can use it to train its motor skills and coordinated movements.

In addition, a successful magic trick that is rewarded with applause strengthens self-confidence through the courage your child musters to master stage fright.

All in all, learning magic tricks is considered educationally valuable and was already seen by Goethe as a nice activity for his grandchildren.

From what age is a magic box suitable?

Of course, it would be ideal if your child can already read, because then the surprise effect during magic and the independence are greater.

But it’s also nice when you can prepare tricks together and thus spend an exciting and fun time together and surprise the others in the family or among friends.

Basically, magic boxes are available on the market from the age of 5. It is not recommended for small children because magic kits usually contain small parts that can be swallowed.

The range is broader from primary school age. More important than age is a certain amount of patience and concentration and an understanding that magic has less to do with magic than with deception. But it is a lot of fun to make the audience believe that something incredible is happening.

If you start early with your child, he still needs your support. Later on, it will be easier for them to learn magic tricks on their own with the help of the explanations. It is also helpful to watch videos with instructions where you can see how it should look like.

Children’s equipment/toy sites

The selection here is not necessarily larger, but smaller, individual manufacturers also offer some higher-quality products that you won’t find everywhere. Buyers’ reviews are also sometimes more detailed (e.g. at mytoys).

  • myToys
  • tausendkind
  • SpieleMax
  • Mifus

Offline

On the one hand, you can get individual advice here and also take a closer look at what’s inside the respective magic box. On the other hand, the selection of magic boxes in the general toy shops is not possible in the same size as on the net.

However, this sometimes means that the shops have already made a good pre-selection of successful sets and that you have a better overview.

  • myToys
  • various toy shops

This also includes the sub-category of the specialist shop. Here you will find a wide range of accessories – unusual items (such as easily bent cutlery or an Indian scarf) and replacements for lost items (e.g. ropes or thumb tips). A selection of the standard range of magic kits and selected products of quality workmanship.

  • Magic shops
    • e.g. the Magic King in Berlin
    • or: Magic Center Harri in Kraftsolms
  • (many of these shops also have online sales)

What is an alternative to the magic box for children?

A nice, creative but more elaborate alternative is to make utensils for magic tricks. You can’t make one thing that fulfils all the functions of a box, but you can make different ones.

Another possibility is to do the tricks yourself with your own utensils. You don’t have to make anything extra, but you can do tricks yourself with things that you have in your household anyway.

For example, you can make things float in your hands, make water disappear in a bag, rub a coin on your arm, make a match disappear.

There are also instructions on how to build a small magic box yourself out of a matchbox. In the box, you can store a few magic objects, such as matches and coins, which you can use to perform tricks. You can find the instructions linked in the sources below.

This is very practical when you are travelling with your child, for example on a long car journey.

In the end, however, a complete magic kit is a great gift that motivates you to get started right away without any effort, and with its accessories you can practise many different tricks.

Decision: What types of magic kits are there and which is the right one for your child?

If you want to get a magic box for your child, there are three alternatives to choose from:

  • with wooden equipment
  • with plastic equipment
  • with cardboard equipment

The equipment of these three never consists entirely of the one material mentioned, but mainly. These three types differ mainly in terms of value and durability. On the other hand, the decision for one or the other is also a matter of taste. All three types have their advantages and disadvantages. Depending on what you prefer and how much motivation your child already has, a different type is suitable for you.

First of all, here is a brief overview of the outer materials of the crates.

The magic boxes themselves are made of cardboard, plastic and metal. This means the container in which the rest is stored.

Outside

Metal

The metal boxes are cases that contain all the material. They are robust, classic and timeless. This is a nice form to always take all the magic utensils with you and maybe even to perform as a little magician. The boxes make a professional impression and are also in a higher price category.

Cardboard

Cardboard boxes are boxes, like game boxes, in which all the accessories are stored. There is no extra storage in which you can transport the utensils.

For example, there are magic boxes in an unconventional shape like a magic hat or cage from which all the magic tricks start.

In the following section, we would like to make your purchase decision easier.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a wooden magic box?

So-called luxury versions are, as far as possible, made almost entirely of solid wood. This is a very durable and haptically beautiful material and might appeal to environmentally conscious people.

Advantages
  • Robust
  • Nice to touch
  • Sustainable
Disadvantages
  • More cost-intensive
  • Equipment is smaller but more thoughtful

What distinguishes the magic box with plastic equipment and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

On the other hand, there are the editions that are mostly made of multi-coloured plastic. This gives the whole thing a more childlike, colourful touch, is also cheaper, but not as durable.

Advantages
  • Bright colours
  • Cheap
  • Lightweight
  • Larger features
Disadvantages
  • Not sustainable
  • Haptics and smell not so appealing

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a magic box made of cardboard?

There are also boxes with contents primarily made of cardboard. These are good for a first start, to see if magic appeals to your child. Cardboard is not durable in frequent use, so once the passion has been kindled, you can go for a more robust version.

Advantages
  • Perfect for getting started
  • Inexpensive
  • Colourful
  • Easy
Disadvantages
  • Not durable
  • Appearance less appealing and valuable

Buying criteria: These are the factors you can use to compare and evaluate magic boxes for children

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible magic boxes for children.

The criteria you can use to compare the magic boxes for children include:

  • Age
  • Size
  • Price

In the following paragraphs, we will explain what is important in each of the criteria to help you make your purchase decision.

Age

Some are looking for magic boxes for children as young as 3 or 4, but manufacturers traditionally recommend them for children as young as 5. It all depends on the child, their basic understanding of magic and a certain amount of patience and attention.

Is he or she already willing or even interested in doing the tricks and perhaps several times?

You should pay close attention to the age at which the manufacturer recommends his product.

This determines, for example, the difficulty of the tricks. This will also prevent your child from quickly putting the box aside in frustration.

from 5-6

There are also boxes with a large repertoire. The tricks are kept simple so that children don’t lose interest and the explanations are illustrated. There are also supporting online videos.

from 7-10

From 7 onwards, the tricks become more demanding in their execution (e.g. by using several objects at the same time) and the associated imagination, and require more dexterity and fine motor skills.

From 10, the magic boxes also convince adults who want to take up a new hobby. The users of these boxes are fascinated above all by the reaction of their audience, as the deceptions are more amazing, and partly by the seriousness of the products, which can already move away from the childish. So very appropriate for older children and young teenagers, so that they feel taken seriously as users.

Scope

Tricks

Apart from the presentation and the material, the trick boxes differ mainly in the number of magic tricks taught, which are, however, independent of the recommended age.

There are boxes with 9 tricks or others with 150, sometimes already with complete suggestions for whole shows. This does not necessarily mean that they have to differ greatly in the amount of equipment. But it does mean that the manufacturers keep the range clear in the case of one box and get everything out of the accessories that it has to offer in the case of another.

Additional

The additional material already included can vary. Sometimes a magic wand is already included, or a rabbit to disappear, or a cape. The instructions are available either in the classic way in a popular booklet, or with videos on DVD or online.

In addition, make-up with children’s make-up can add to the overall magic fun.

5 tips on how to learn magic

Magic is an art. But do we have to practice for years before we can flawlessly pull off a trick? Here we have collected the 5 most effective tips you should pay attention to from the beginning:

Tip 1

Read the instructions carefully (before), understand each step well.

Tip 2

Practice the same trick several times so that you are sure and don’t get confused and your audience might see through the process.

Tip 3

Don’t give up. Practice again and again. Step by step more and more without help. In fact, until you can do it in your sleep. Then you have time during the show to distract your audience. You are talking about something completely different and they don’t see through your magic.

Tip 4

Practice again and again in front of a new audience. (other friends, other family members) Until you amaze someone really well!

Tip 5

Learn from the great magicians. Watch videos and practise a trick by copying it exactly – that’s how you learn from the pros what’s important.

German Magic Championships
