Buying and evaluation criteria for LED floodlight

When searching for the perfect LED floodlight, you will find many different models on the internet. In this section, we want to show you which criteria you should consider when buying in order to find the perfect model for you.

The criteria with which you can compare the different LED floodlights with each other include:

Light output

When assessing the brightness of LED lamps, it is not sufficient to consider the wattage, as is the case with conventional light bulbs. To judge how bright an LED lamp is, several factors must be taken into account.

Decisive for the brightness are the number of lumens and the beam angle.

The luminous flux in lumens indicates how much light is emitted by an LED. When assessing the luminous flux, the beam angle must also be taken into account, which also has an influence on the brightness of a lamp.

Lamps with a smaller beam angle are brighter in spots than lamps with a larger beam angle.

The luminous intensity is given in candela and makes it possible to compare the brightness of LED lamps with different beam angles. The luminous intensity indicates how bright a lamp is in relation to the solid angle. However, this unit is not specified by all manufacturers, as the consideration of lumens is more common.

How many lumens an LED lamp should have depends on the particular location where the lamp is to be used. When used indoors, the colour of the furnishings also plays a role. A dark interior absorbs more light than a light one.

Colour temperature

The colour temperature of LED lamps is given in Kelvin. With different numbers of Kelvin, the mood that the LED lamp conveys differs. The following table lists the three different colour temperatures:

Lamps whose colour temperature corresponds to warm white contain a higher red or yellow component and therefore have a cosier effect. Neutral white light, on the other hand, contains a higher blue component and thus appears cooler. Cold white is also called daylight white because this light is particularly bright and intense.

LED lamps with up to 10,000 Kelvin are suitable for outdoor use or in aquariums, but not for indoor use.

Protection class and degree of protection

The protection class indicates whether and how the protective earth conductor must be connected. It describes the protection against electric shocks of the lamp in case of an operating helper. Three protection classes are defined, which are shown in the table below:

The protection class is often confused with the IP protection rating. This indicates how well the lamp is protected against the ingress of liquids or foreign bodies. The protection class is particularly important when buying a lamp for outdoor use.

The IP protection class is indicated by two digits. The first digit describes the protection against foreign bodies and the second the protection against liquids. For example, the IP65 protection class stands for a dust-tight lamp that is protected against water jets.

Type of power supply

The type of power supply can be distinguished between three power sources:

  • Battery
  • Mains cable
  • Solar panel

LED floodlights that are supplied with power via a rechargeable battery can be used in mobile applications. Therefore, this type of power supply is often used for construction spotlights. As a rule, a lithium-ion battery is used. The decisive factor here is the power of the battery.

A mains cable enables a longer service life

LED floodlights that are connected directly to the power source via a mains cable have only limited mobile use and must be placed near a power source. The advantage of this type of power supply, however, is the long service life.

An LED spotlight with a solar panel has the advantage that the spotlight can also be placed in a location where there is no power source. This makes this type of power supply ideal for use in the garden.

What is special about an LED floodlight and what advantages does it offer?

An LED floodlight offers a variety of advantages over conventional halogen floodlights. The following list shows the main advantages of LED floodlights:

  • Lower power consumption: LED lamps consume significantly less power than halogen lamps and are therefore more efficient. Unlike incandescent bulbs, which also produce a lot of heat when they generate light, LEDs use electricity directly to generate light.
  • Long life: LED lamps allow a higher number of switching cycles. Therefore, they can be switched on and off more often, which extends the life of LED lamps.
  • Do not contain hazardous substances: LED floodlights do not contain hazardous substances and therefore do not pose a danger if a lamp is dropped.
  • Instantaneous luminous flux: LED lamps do not have long ignition or switching times and reach their maximum luminosity immediately after being switched on. This makes them easier on the eyes.

What types of LED floodlights are there?

In the following, we would like to introduce you to the different types of LED floodlights. In general, there are two types of LED floodlights: LED floodlights with motion detectors and LED floodlights without motion detectors.

LED floodlights with motion detector

LED floodlights with motion detectors are particularly suitable for outdoor use, for example in the garden or in the entrance area of the house. The great advantage of this type of LED floodlight is that the light switches on automatically as soon as you are near the floodlight.

This type of LED floodlight also offers additional safety. A LED floodlight with motion detector can help to protect the house from burglars.

  • Serves as protection against burglars

  • Motion detector sometimes also reacts to animals
  • Manual switching on and off often not possible

LED floodlight without motion detector

An LED floodlight without motion detector can be used both outdoors and indoors. With these models, the floodlight must be switched on and off manually. In return, however, the light is on even if you do not move for a longer period of time.

In contrast to LED floodlights with motion sensors, these models do not have a built-in brightness sensor. Therefore, with this type of LED floodlight, you have to remember to switch the light off again.

LED floodlights are also suitable for illuminating garages, workshops, halls or sports fields. There are also special LED floodlights for construction sites. These are often equipped with a rechargeable battery.

What are the alternatives to LED floodlights?

There are few alternatives to LED floodlights that are as energy-efficient as LED lamps. We have selected the most common alternatives for you:

  • Induction lighting
  • Halogen floodlight
  • Gas discharge floodlight

An alternative that has similar properties to LED floodlights is induction lighting. This is similarly expensive to purchase and, like the LED lamps, has a long service life and low power consumption.

Halogen floodlights are another alternative to LED floodlights. Although they are cheaper to buy, they have a shorter service life and are not as energy-efficient as LED floodlights.

Gas discharge floodlights are another alternative to LED floodlights. The metal vapour floodlights, also called HQI floodlights, are the successors of the mercury floodlights. Sodium vapour gas discharge lamps, which are mainly used in road construction, were also developed from this technology.

HQI floodlights are primarily suitable for illuminating very large areas.

The metal halide floodlights are often used for sports fields or in halls. The gas discharge floodlights have a very high light output. However, they need around 8 minutes to start up completely. They are usually only available from specialist dealers and are relatively expensive.

What does an LED floodlight cost?

LED floodlights come in different price ranges. How much money you should spend on an LED floodlight depends entirely on your individual requirements and the floodlight’s area of application. What colour temperature should I choose for an LED floodlight?

When choosing the colour temperature of the floodlight, it depends on the purpose it is to fulfil. A cosy light is achieved with a warm white colour temperature. This requires about 2,700 to 3,250 Kelvin. Warm white light is primarily used indoors.

Neutral white light is achieved with 3,250 to 5,250 Kelvin. This colour temperature is suitable for outdoor spotlights, large halls and cellars. In industry, floodlights with a cool white colour temperature are generally used. This is achieved with 5,250 to 8,000 Kelvin.
