What do you have to consider when buying a kitchen lamp?

Of course, you have to make sure that the kitchen lamp provides a lot of light and shines into as many corners as possible. Depending on the type of lamp and the way it is installed, it may be difficult to change the bulb in some kitchen lamps. So you should think carefully about whether to go for a ceiling light or a hanging kitchen lamp.

Basically, it should be noted that there are many different types of kitchen lamps. That’s why it’s good to know in advance where the lamp will go and how it will be installed.

Another important aspect is that you consider where the lamp will be placed in the kitchen. If it is near the hob, it is important to note that the lamp will get a lot of steam. So before buying, make sure that it is also suitable for this and that you may have to clean it more often and more intensively.

You can say that it ranges from €3 to €39,000. With this, we just want to give you a small overview of how large the price range of a kitchen lamp can be, depending on the model and quality.

What size kitchen lamp should I buy?

Kitchen lamps come in many different sizes and shapes. When choosing the size and type, you should consider the size of the kitchen in which the lamp will be used.

If you have a large kitchen, large, round ceiling lamps or a hanging lamp are the best choice, as the light needs to illuminate a larger area. Of course, you can also use more smaller ones to have more light.

If the kitchen is smaller, you should go for a swivel-mounted luminaire because you can turn the individual luminaires individually in all directions. This way, you can illuminate specific areas and better cut, mix and do other things in your kitchen that require a lot of light.
What are the alternatives to a kitchen lamp?

There are many different types of kitchen lamps. Due to the wide range of models, each model also has advantages and disadvantages. In the next section, we will give you a brief overview of the alternatives.

Lamp type Description
Under-cabinet luminaires Under-cabinet luminaires can be mounted directly on the wall, even under a wall cupboard. This provides additional light to the kitchen lamp.
Rail and cable systems Rail and cable systems are particularly suitable for kitchens with many angles because they can be moved around easily.
Swivel luminaire A swivel luminaire is an eye-catcher and also very practical because it is height-adjustable. They are popular above cooking islands, but are rather impractical in a small kitchen with lots of wall cabinets. They are most often seen above the dining table.

Decision: What types of kitchen lamps are there and which one is right for you?

If you want to buy a kitchen lamp, there are four alternatives to choose from:

  • classic ceiling light
  • LED kitchen lamp
  • Wall light
  • Suspended lamp

The different types of kitchen lamps have advantages and disadvantages. The following section will help you decide.

What distinguishes a classic ceiling lamp and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A ceiling light is, as the name suggests, on the ceiling, which makes it very space-saving. Ceiling lights can be large or small and also round or square. You are free to decide which type of ceiling light you choose according to your needs and your interior design style.

  • Space-saving
  • Bright or more subdued light, depending on the light source
  • Compatible with any furnishing style
  • Light may not reach every corner
  • More difficult to change light sources
  • No atmospheric light

You can put different light sources in a ceiling lamp so that you can decide for yourself whether you prefer a very bright light or a warmer shade. Whether vintage or modern, a classic ceiling light fits into every household.

Because the luminaire is on the ceiling, the light may not reach some places, such as under a wall cupboard. However, you can help out with under-cabinet luminaires. When changing the bulbs, you may have to take the ceiling light apart first to get to the bulb.

What are the features of an LED kitchen lamp and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The LED lamp has become very popular due to many different aspects. LED lamps are more expensive to buy than other light sources. In the long run, however, the price is balanced out because the low energy consumption means lower electricity costs.

Since LED lamps do not generate heat, they can be used almost anywhere. Moreover, the lamps no longer contain any toxic substances, such as mercury or lead. This is a great advantage from an ecological point of view.

  • Energy-saving
  • Long service life
  • There are also dimmable lamps
  • No heat development and no UV radiation
  • More expensive to buy
  • Very direct light
  • With cheap LED lamps, the light quickly becomes dim

If you wish, you can also buy a dimmable LED lamp, because otherwise they have a very direct light. If you want a cosy atmosphere, you should install the lamp behind a screen.

The direct light can also be an advantage if it is mounted above the worktop in the kitchen, for example. However, it is important to pay attention to the quality of LED lamps. Inexpensive lamps may quickly become dim and not provide optimal light.

What are the features of a wall luminaire and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The wall luminaire is mounted on the side of the wall. The individual spotlights or spots can be aligned as desired. If they are turned towards the wall, you get atmospheric light that does not dazzle anyone. This is advantageous for a dining area.

  • Dark areas are better illuminated
  • Spotlights can be aligned
  • Atmospheric light
  • Very decorative
  • Not suitable for sole use
  • Gives off little light

However, if you want good lighting, you can also adjust the spotlights to the desired position and illuminate certain areas better. However, the wall lamp is not suitable as a single light source.

If your goal is good lighting, you can install it in addition to a kitchen lamp to have more light in your kitchen. The wall lamp also offers a decorative side effect, as it is available in many different styles.

What distinguishes a pendant luminaire and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

A pendant lamp often convinces with its design, as it creates a cosy and pleasant atmosphere. It can be in almost any room, whether dining room, living room, bedroom or even in the kitchen.

  • Height adjustable
  • Beautiful designs
  • Targeted light
  • If they hang too low, they get in the way
  • Offer too little light for an entire room
  • Luxury lamps are more expensive

If you have a small kitchen or a kitchen with lots of wall cupboards, a pendant lamp often has too little space and does not look good. Moreover, it provides too little light for an entire room. Of course, you can help with additional wall luminaires or under-cabinet luminaires.

A very popular option is a pendant light above a cooking island, in a spacious kitchen. The risk of hitting your head is low because you can adjust the height.

Buying criteria: You can use these factors to compare and evaluate kitchen lamps

In the following, we will show you which aspects you can use to decide between the many possible kitchen lamps.

The criteria you can use to compare kitchen lamps include:

In the following paragraphs, we explain what is important in the individual criteria.

All types of kitchen lamps come in many different sizes: The size of a kitchen lamp can range from a diameter of 14 cm to 40 cm. Rectangular ceiling lamps are even available with a length of 120 cm.

The size of your kitchen lamp depends on the kitchen it will go in.

For larger, more spacious kitchens, large ceiling and recessed luminaires are ideal. In addition, you can use wall luminaires or under-cabinet luminaires to provide optimum light in the kitchen. Above a cooking island, a hanging luminaire is an eye-catcher for your guests and you can work very well because it illuminates the island optimally.

If you have a small kitchen or a kitchen with wall cabinets, you can work well with swivel luminaires and wall luminaires. Since you can turn the individual spots of the luminaires in all directions, you can illuminate certain areas precisely or highlight them.

Material & style

The material of the kitchen lamp also plays a role. Standard kitchen lamps are made of metal, aluminium or plastic.

If the lamp is near the extractor fan, you must make sure when buying that it is also suitable for this. A ceiling or recessed lamp is a good choice here because it is easy to clean. A kitchen lamp made of fabric sucks up steam and grease, so you should avoid it in this case.

Kitchen lamps made of wood, porcelain or glass are very decorative and popular. Whether vintage, rustic, modern or country house style, there is a kitchen lamp for every type of interior that visually matches the rest of the kitchen.

Suitable for LED

LED lamps are well suited for the kitchen because they provide bright, good light. When buying a luminaire, however, you need to make sure that it is suitable for LED lamps. The right light colour is also important:

Light Kelvin
Warm white light depending on intensity, around 2500 to 3500 Kelvin (cosy atmosphere)
Neutral white light around 4000 Kelvin (good for kitchen)
Day or cool white light around 6500 Kelvin (very direct light)

Many models of LED lamps are dimmable. You can prepare food in the kitchen in neutral light and then dim it to create a cosy and atmospheric atmosphere.

The LED lamp has become a very popular light source due to its low energy consumption. It actually consumes up to 90% less electricity than an incandescent lamp. This makes up for the slightly higher purchase costs in the long run.

LED lamps can also be recessed ceiling lights. Since you can use many smaller LED ceiling lights, the light ratio is optimised and you can specifically illuminate darker areas.

Facts worth knowing about the topic of kitchen lamps

How do I install a kitchen lamp?

Have you bought a kitchen lamp and now have to install it yourself? In the following section, I have a short and easy-to-understand guide for you on how to install it safely.

The right tools are important:

  • High, sturdy ladder
  • A phase tester – to check the current of the wire
  • A luster terminal – to connect the cables
  • The luminaire and the appropriate bulb

First of all, switch off the fuse, then check with the phase tester whether there is really no more current on the line.

Then take the luster terminal and insert the protective conductor first, then the neutral conductor and finally the phase conductor.

Next, mount the lamp; this varies depending on the type and installation of the lamp. Finally, test whether the lamp works.

Of course, there are always cases where something does not work. In such a case, you should call in an expert who may be able to fix a fault and install the kitchen lamp.

How do I change the bulb of a kitchen lamp?

How you change the light bulb of your kitchen lamp depends on whether you have an ordinary light bulb or an LED lamp and on how the luminaire is installed. With some luminaires, you first have to remove the shuttering to get to the bulb.

Basically, you change a light bulb as follows:

  1. Switch off the power
  2. Unscrew the old bulb
  3. Screw in the new bulb
  4. Test

Before unscrewing the bulb, it is very important to switch off the power. When the bulb has cooled down, you can simply unscrew it. Afterwards, simply screw the new bulb back in and test whether it works. If it doesn’t or if there are other doubts, it is best to get help from an expert.

There are two ways to change the bulb of an LED lamp.

If it is a replaceable bulb, it can be replaced in the same way as an ordinary light bulb. Of course, it is always important to check whether the luminaire is also suitable for an LED lamp.

But if it is a non-replaceable, integrated light source, you have no choice but to replace the entire luminaire. Since LED lamps have a very long service life, you do not have to replace them as often as an ordinary light bulb.
