Do you love the pleasure of Cuban cigars and would also like to keep a stock of exquisite cigars at home? Then a humidor is the perfect container for you, in which cigars can be stored for a long time without losing their fine aroma.

Which cigar humidor suits you best is a good and legitimate question. Depending on the intended use and the intensity of your cigar passion, different humidors come into question. For our product comparison, we have compared various humidor models and worked out the most important aspects.

  • A humidor is a container, usually made of cedar wood, in which cigars can be stored for a long time.
  • Humidors are available in different designs: as a small travel humidor, as a table humidor or also in the form of a cigar cabinet.
  • If you want to store your cigars for a longer period of time, a humidor is indispensable, because cigars need a certain humidity (approx. 70%) so that they do not dry out and can mature for later enjoyment.

The Best Humidor: Our Choices

Below we have compiled our favourites. This should help you to simplify your purchase decision and find the right humidor for your needs.

Buying and evaluation criteria for humidors

In order to find the most suitable humidor, we have worked out some buying criteria that you should consider when buying. These criteria are intended to facilitate a comparison of the individual humidor models so that you can make your choice objectively and in a well-founded manner.

The criteria that help you compare the different humidors include:

Below you can take a closer look at the criteria you should look for when buying a new humidor.

Humidors are available in many different sizes. While portable travel humidors only hold 2 to 10 cigars at a time, humidor cabinets offer space for 100 or even more cigars. Of course, there are also humidor boxes in which up to 100 cigars can be stored under perfect climatic conditions.

When choosing a suitable humidor, your personal consumption behaviour should not be neglected.

For example, if you only consume 1 or 2 cigars a month, it is not worth buying a large humidor cabinet. For such low consumption, a small humidor box should suffice – and in an emergency you can always add more.

When choosing a humidor, you should also pay special attention to the material, as some materials can influence the aroma of the tobacco. Humidors are usually made of wood. However, some aromatic woods, such as Canadian cedar, Lebanon cedar and Western red cedar, are not desirable as they can completely mask exquisite tobacco flavours.

Spanish cedar (Cedrela odorata), on the other hand, is a suitable material as it supports the maturation and aroma development of a cigar. In addition, the wood helps to keep cigars free from pests such as mites and tobacco beetles. Furthermore, Spanish cedar also ensures that the humidity inside the humidor is kept constant over the long term.

Humidifier system

If the humidity is too low, the aroma of the cigars can be permanently lost. If the humidity is too high, there is a risk of mould forming on the cigars. Humidors are therefore usually equipped with a humidifier system to maintain a constant humidity inside the humidor.

Classic passive humidifiers are mainly sponges or acrylic polymers. There are also electronic humidifiers, whereby air humidity is automatically kept constant. Cigars can thus retain their full tobacco aroma and be stored unattended for years.

Design and equipment

A noble design is also one of the important purchase criteria. The most suitable humidor is always the one that you like. In addition, it is also important whether a humidor is well equipped.

For example, especially modern models always have a digital hygrometer. Some humidors also entice you to buy them with various accessories, such as a cigar cutter or a cigar case.

Guide: Frequently asked questions about humidors answered in detail

In the following, we would like to answer the most important questions about humidors. In this way, we want to give you a deeper insight into the subject.

What is a humidor?

The term humidor is derived from the Latin word “humidus”, which means moist. A humidor is a container equipped with a humidification system on the inside, made of wood or other materials, in which cigars are stored.

The filler of cigars usually consists of rolled, complete tobacco leaves and also retains a certain amount of moisture, which binds the multitude of aromas and essential oils. If it is too dry, the cigars wither and the aroma is also easily lost. A humidor keeps cigars from drying out for this purpose. With the right humidity, cigars can even be stored for years.

What types of humidors are there?

There are usually three different humidor models – the table humidor, the travel humidor and the humidor cabinet. Depending on your intended use, you can choose a suitable model from these. The table humidor is the most common form of humidor. It usually offers space for 20 up to approx. 50 cigars. The appearance and design play a major role here, as it is placed in the room as a decoration.

Do you travel a lot and want to have your cigars with you? Then a travel humidor is suitable for you. With this cigar container you can take 80 or even more cigars with you. Some travel humidors are made of hard plastic, which offers sufficient protection against damage.

Table and travel humidors usually use sponge or acrylic polymer humidifiers. Since a sponge releases moisture relatively unevenly, the humidity is also not kept constant. Humidors with sponge humidifiers are therefore unsuitable for long-term storage.

An acrylic polymer humidifier keeps the humidity relatively constant at about 70%.

However, regular control is necessary to prevent bacterial infestation or mould growth. A hygrometer is very helpful here. With a hygrometer you can always see how humid it is inside your humidor.

If you smoke a lot and want to have a large stock of cigars at home, a humidor cabinet is suitable for you. This model has a capacity of up to 500 cigars. Humidor cabinets are always equipped with an electronic humidifier. This keeps the humidity inside the humidor at a constant level of about 70%.

What does a humidor cost?

The prices of humidors can range from low to high for different models. The following table should give you an overview.
Humidor models price range
Table humidor approx. 50 – 200 euros
Travel humidor approx. 30 – 60 euros
Humidor cabinet approx. 100 – 400 euros

The cheapest model is the travel humidor, which you can get from about 30 euros. For the most expensive humidor or humidor cabinet, you have to spend at least 100 euros. Some deluxe humidor cabinets even cost over 1000 euros. Depending on the features, the prices of table humidors can also vary greatly between 50 and 200 euros.

How do I care for my humidor?

In order to store cigars for several years and sometimes even decades, regular care is necessary. Here we list what you should pay attention to when caring for your humidor.

  • To avoid bacterial infestation and mould, your humidor should be aired from time to time.
  • If your humidor is made of wood, you should also check for possible resin formation.
  • Sponge humidifiers should be moistened weekly with distilled water.
  • Acrylic polymer humidifiers should also be checked regularly and refilled with distilled water if necessary.
  • Hygrometers need to be serviced regularly to keep your cigars in optimal condition.

Even the highest quality humidor cannot do its job completely without your help and therefore needs regular care. This way your cigars can be stored for years and sometimes even decades.

If you are a beginner and want to buy a humidor, a table humidor is especially suitable for you. A travel humidor suits you perfectly if you travel a lot. A humidor cabinet is perfect for cigar lovers who want to store a large quantity of cigars at home.

If you also appreciate and enjoy the taste of an exquisite cigar, you should definitely not miss out on a good humidor. Only in a humidor can cigars be stored for a long time. Whether you want to take cigars with you on holiday or have a large stock of cigars at home – there is always a suitable humidor for you.
