What is the role of serotonin in the body and what happens when there is a serotonin deficiency?

Serotonin is considered the happiness hormone par excellence and is also known as an important messenger substance in the brain. (1) If you suffer from a serotonin deficiency, you feel irritable or anxious more often and your sleep-wake rhythm also suffers. Serotonin deficiency can occur in several ways. It is often preceded by a lack of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is not only absorbed by eating eggs or fish, but also by sunlight. (2) In the summer you feel fit and full of energy, but in the winter you’re just a bit tired? Then you probably lack vitamin D, which would be converted into serotonin. A large proportion of Germans have only half the recommended daily intake of vitamin D.

Another cause of serotonin deficiency can be an insufficient supply of important omega-3 fatty acids. These are important support for your brain and heart. (3) The consequences of a deficiency are low mood and reduced concentration, so that your body cannot use its full potential. Omega-3 fatty acids are found especially in fish, but a vegan alternative is nuts and algae, where the concentration is much lower.(4)

How high should the serotonin level in urine be?

The normal range of serotonin per gram (μg/g) of creatinine is 50-250 micrograms. (5) Please note that some medications can affect this value and thus falsify the test result.

What are the risk groups?

In Germany, more than 5 million people per year suffer from depression due to serotonin deficiency. Women are affected twice as often as men and show more varied symptoms. (6) Certain medications can also have an effect on how susceptible a person is to depression.

What influence does the hormone oestrogen have?

It is not only the susceptibility to depression that distinguishes the hormone balance of the two sexes: the levels of oestrogen and testosterone are particularly decisive.
Oestrogen plays an important role in fertility.

The female hormone is oestrogen: it determines the development of the female sex organs and the female cycle. During pregnancy or the menopause, women have to deal with fluctuations in oestrogen levels in particular.(7) There is no such thing as an “optimal” oestrogen level: this hormone in particular must be considered on a very individual basis and fluctuates considerably in the course of a monthly cycle. In any case, you should only use this test as a guide and discuss the results with your doctor.

What influence does the hormone testosterone have?

Testosterone is particularly important for muscle building and physical fitness and is also known as the male hormone. (8) Nevertheless, men over 30 often have to struggle with testosterone deficiency. This can manifest itself in overweight and fatigue – an excess of testosterone, on the other hand, leads to aggression.(9)

Through the bloodstream, testosterone affects various organs throughout the body, so a testosterone deficiency can manifest itself in many different ways. With a hormone test you can make sure that your testosterone level is balanced. By the way, women also have small amounts of testosterone in their blood, which is important for muscle building and blood formation.

Measure your hormone levels yourself: What you should look out for in self-tests

If you feel a little dull, unfocused or even unnaturally hyper, it may have something to do with your hormone balance. With a home hormone test, you can get a first impression without having to wait a long time for a doctor’s appointment. A test is not only easy and painless to do at home, but can also be sent in easily and discreetly. You will receive the results by post or e-mail.

For whom is a hormone test useful?

A hormone test can help if you have been feeling low for some time without knowing why. Hormones affect your eating habits, your sleep patterns, your mood and your fitness. (10) So if your hormone levels aren’t balanced, it’s easy to feel like you’re not living up to your potential. Even small changes can have a big impact. So it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your hormone levels. Even if you don’t have any symptoms, a hormone test can be revealing.

How can I measure my hormone levels?

Most home hormone tests work with a saliva sample. In the Hormone Test Kit you will find a cotton swab to take the sample and a small tube to send the swab to the lab after you have taken it. This is very easy and painless. Your saliva consists mainly of water, but it also contains small amounts of proteins, enzymes and hormones. (11) With the help of a saliva test, you can find out the concentration and composition of these substances in your saliva.

With the Hormone Test Kits for home use, you can send a urine sample just as easily. To do this, you need to collect the specified amount of urine in the enclosed container and send it well sealed to the specialised laboratory. There it will be analysed by experts. Urine excretes many harmful substances that the body cannot process. (12) These residues are particularly useful for determining your hormone levels, because the lab can determine whether certain substances are present in larger or smaller amounts than normal. This can have an impact on your mood and health.

A blood test doesn’t sound like something you should do at home. But even a small amount of blood can tell you so much about your hormone levels and your health! Not only can allergies and intolerances be detected, but also deficiencies of certain vitamins or minerals.(13) You can send in a blood sample just as easily as a saliva or urine sample. A small prick in the finger is enough to obtain enough blood for a sample. The pain is limited and the bleeding stops quickly. Then you can send in the tube and just have to wait for the results.

How conclusive are the results of a hormone test?

Your samples will be sent to a specialised laboratory with years of experience, where they will be analysed and evaluated by experts. You can therefore fully rely on the experienced diagnosticians. The results of your test will show you even small changes in your hormone balance. Even small deviations can show up in your well-being, but they don’t necessarily have to. You can also use a hormone test to counteract a certain deficiency.

Where else can I have my hormone levels measured?

If you don’t want to do the test alone at home, you can always contact your family doctor. He or she can not only explain everything to you, but also help you take saliva and blood samples. However, as with the self-test at home, the samples are not usually analysed on site, but are also sent to a laboratory. You can also seek advice at a pharmacy. Pharmacists usually know a lot about the importance and influence of hormones, so they can help you choose the right test. You still have to take the sample at home.

  • Easy to do at home
  • No appointment necessary
  • Free information material by post
  • Easy to use
  • No professional help when taking the sample
  • No confirmation whether the amount taken is sufficient for evaluation

What can I do if the test result is not good?

If you are worried about the result of your hormone test, you should definitely talk to your family doctor about it. He or she will be able to clear up many uncertainties and know how you should proceed. But even with a self-test, you are not completely on your own: The laboratory will send you a variety of health information and instructions on how to deal with the results and use them for a healthy lifestyle.

A hormone test can tell you many things about yourself. Whether you have a medical condition or just want to know what your hormone levels are – a hormone test is always informative. A self-test at home has the advantage that you don’t have to wait a long time to be seen by a professional. With a hormone test kit, not only does taking a sample become a simple task, but the rest of the procedure is also easy to manage thanks to information material and comprehensive customer service. This way, you can decide for yourself which test from the large selection is the right one for you.
