What exactly is glutathione?

Glutathione consists of the three amino acids glutamate, cysteine and glycine and is therefore also called tripeptide. Basically, glutathione is an important component of every cell in our body.

This substance protects our organism from harmful dangers and is therefore considered vital.

According to the latest findings, glutathione is able to enter the cells directly. The evidence for this was provided, among other things, by a study from America. This showed that the body’s own glutathione level could be increased by up to 35%. This was particularly visible in the blood cells, plasma and lymphocytes. (1)

If the production of glutathione decreases and there is accordingly too little of the active substance in our cells, our body has a problem fending off the dangers.

The neuronal system also depends on glutathione to maintain its functions. According to studies, a significant reduction in the amount of the substance is said to promote cell death.

As a result, some of the body’s functions become unstable and the person may feel ill. At first glance, the cause of the disease is often not obvious.

This connection could also be interesting with regard to neurodegenerative diseases, which include Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Scientific studies have provided evidence that glutathione is indeed able to delay the onset of the disease processes or mitigate further progression. (2)

It is striking that people with liver diseases often have reduced glutathione levels. It does not matter whether the disease can be attributed to heavy alcohol consumption or hepatitis.

Basically, the liver provides the largest amount of glutathione, which is why the connection between organ health and the available glutathione level is also interesting.

In a model on animals, however, it was found that mice with liver cirrhosis lived longer when the amount of glutathione was increased. (3)

It is also clear that the human respiratory organ is very sensitive to oxidative stress. At the same time, it has the highest demand for glutathione. According to studies, the substance can be counted among the most effective antioxidants that protect the lungs from external influences. (4)

Another study showed a statistically significant positive effect on sperm motility, especially on the percentage of forward movement. (5)

How is glutathione normally located in our body?

Every cell in our body is capable of producing glutathione itself. Since our liver is generally the central organ of our body for detoxification, the liver cells make the most glutathione. The highest concentration of glutathione is therefore found in this organ.

But glutathione can also be added to the human body through food. Especially with meat, fruit and vegetables, the glutathione store can be filled up.

However, it is important that the food is freshly prepared and then eaten immediately. Preserved foods contain much less glutathione.

How much glutathione should a person take in daily?

Scientific studies have proven that about 250 mg of glutathione should be taken in daily by the body through food. With this we can cope with the fight against harmful environmental factors and feel healthy.

In this day and age, however, it is unfortunately the case that our eating habits have changed greatly in contrast to the past.

Ready-made meals or meals from a can are cooked for so long in advance that unfortunately few healthy components remain.

Glutathione is also only contained in a very low concentration in these types of dishes.

If you have been eating this way, you may only be taking in 50-60 mg of glutathione daily through food. This is definitely too little to keep the glutathione level constant between 200 and 300 mg.

Which diseases favour a low glutathione level?

First and foremost, the widespread disease “obesity” is listed here. This is not only due to the consumption of convenience food, but of course it plays a major role.

If you have too much excess fat in your body, you break down antioxidants as a result. This in turn leads to very low glutathione levels.

For some other diseases, scientific studies have proven the connection with a low level of glutathione.

These include all cancers, kidney diseases, lung diseases, Parkinson’s disease and some eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

So if you have any of the above diseases, you can expect to have low glutathione levels. In this case, it can’t hurt to take glutathione supplements.

What environmental factors promote low glutathione?

Environmental pollutants and chemicals can also lower the amount of glutathione in the body.

These include first and foremost UV radiation and other ionising radiation.

We cannot always avoid exposure to these pollutants, but we can be aware of them and act accordingly.

So if you are experiencing vague symptoms of illness, it is important to remember that the cause could be that you have too little glutathione stored in your cells.

What can inhibit the production of glutathione?

Of course, you are aware that smoking is generally recognised as being very harmful.

If you are a smoker, you should be aware that this can also lead to a lack of glutathione in your body.

This is especially true if you are a heavy smoker – from about 20 cigarettes per day.

Excessive alcohol consumption can also be equated with smoking. There is nothing wrong with a glass of wine after a good – home-made – meal.

But regular drinking of alcohol not only leads to dependence or addiction, but is also a factor in having too little glutathione in your body.

Taking other medications also leads to low glutathione levels. These include not only medicines prescribed by your doctor, but also over-the-counter medicines.

Taking painkillers or medication for colds is already part of everyday life for many people. All of these are additional toxins that the body has to break down.

Does the production of glutathione decrease with age?

In contrast to the past, people today are getting older overall. On the one hand, of course, this is due to the ever-improving medical possibilities, but on the other hand, it is also due to research into ageing.

There are now many scientific papers on how ageing works and why it happens at all.

In this context, the following study is interesting: several researchers have closely examined 100-year-olds, of which there are several in the world.

It was found that these people had very high levels of glutathione. From this point on, it was clear that glutathione definitely plays a major role in ageing.

The more glutathione that is present in the body, the greater the chances that a person will grow old.

Incidentally, the 100-year-olds tested were not given glutathione externally in the form of tablets.

For these people, the only decisive factors were a healthy lifestyle and a food intake that was always freshly prepared.

Which foods contain particularly high amounts of glutathione?

Of course, there are foods that contain a lot of glutathione and there are foods in which the amount is low or even non-existent. But there is another distinguishing feature that should not be underestimated.

It depends on how and when the product was processed. It makes a big difference whether the goods are consumed immediately after harvest or slaughter or whether they have been preserved.

In most cases, the glutathione content is naturally higher in fresh produce. A liver, for example, contains 737 mg of glutathione directly after slaughter.

This makes it the best of all foods. However, this value only applies in a really freshly slaughtered state.

If the liver is sold afterwards – i.e. if it is preserved – the glutathione content is only 120-275 mg.

So you can see that only very fresh food is suitable for increasing the glutathione level in your body.

Basically, you should remember that foods that are prepared for a long shelf life can contain almost no glutathione at all. This is especially the case with canned foods.

The contents are heated to such a high temperature that in most cases there is no glutathione left. Incidentally, this applies to all healthy substances.

But even dried foods or those that have been cured or smoked contain hardly any appreciable traces of glutathione.

The only exception is in products that have been shock-frozen immediately after slaughtering or harvesting.

Food from the frozen section therefore contains the same number of vitamins, trace elements and also glutathione as in a fresh state.

Basically, you can distinguish between 4 different types of glutathione:

  • Glutathione as a liquid substance

What distinguishes glutathione in capsules and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Most dietary supplements that are intended to supply the body with glutathione are offered as capsules.

In addition to the active ingredient glutathione, other important foods can be added.

The capsule can also be used to control where the contents can unfold.

Ideally, the glutathione is only released in the intestinal area, because in the stomach it would be broken down into the three original components by the digestive juices.

  • Due to the enteric capsule, the active ingredient glutathione is only released in the intestine
  • Important additives can be added to the capsule
  • Capsules can be swallowed easily
  • The daily requirement of glutathione is covered with a single capsule.

What distinguishes glutathione as a liquid substance and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

These are usually spray cans with which the liquid glutathione can be administered orally. The handling is very simple.

Some experts are also convinced that the oral intake of glutathione has a much faster effect on the organism. The active ingredient is directly absorbed through the mucous membranes and quickly supplied to the body.

  • Drops with glutathione can be taken directly or mixed with other liquids
  • Glutathione as a spay can be taken quickly and discreetly in almost all situations
  • The dosage of glutathione can be changed yourself.
  • The optimal dosage does not succeed at first go in order to achieve the desired effect

The active ingredient glutathione not only helps inside the body, but also if you have problems with your skin. Special ointments and tinctures have been developed for this purpose, which are simply applied to the skin.

A nice side effect of using glutathione on the skin is that age spots or dark spots on the skin are lightened.

Some consumers of glutathione often use the ointments just to lighten the skin.

In this case, there are ampoules whose contents can be injected intramuscularly or intravenously. However, only your doctor can decide this, because the ampoules are prescription drugs.

Glutathione is available in many variations on the open market. At first glance, there are few distinguishing features, as the active ingredient glutathione is in the foreground in all products.

Nevertheless, there are some distinguishing features that are geared to the personal interests of consumers.

Dosage forms of glutathione

In most cases, a lack of glutathione is compensated by dietary supplements. The most common form is the supply of capsules.

The capsule walls consist of enteric substances so that the glutathione is only released in the intestine. From there, it is distributed in the body in such a way that it has a detoxifying effect.

Glutathione in liquid form is also a common way to absorb the active ingredient in the body. So if you already have to take a lot of tablets elsewhere, you might be glad of the option of taking drops or sprays.

The taste of the drops may take some getting used to, but the liquid can be added to other food or drink in most cases.

So you can choose the taste and also the concentration of the substance yourself.

If you only want to combat skin problems with glutathione, you should buy an ointment containing glutathione.

If you also want to conceal age spots, a paste for spreading is ideal. You should be aware that an ointment does not work inside your body.

Glutathione administered intravenously belongs in expert hands. You can inject yourself with the active ingredient, but you need a prescription from your doctor to buy the ampoules.

Dosage of the ingredient glutathione

The capsules contain a certain concentration – usually around 250-300 mg of glutathione. This corresponds to the daily requirement of a person who has a low glutathione level.

This usually replenishes the depot and the person already feels much better.

If, on the other hand, your glutathione level tends towards zero, you should pay attention to a higher dosage of glutathione. There are also some preparations on the market that offer the active ingredient from 400 mg upwards.

If you are undergoing medical treatment for your symptoms anyway, you can ask your doctor about it. He or she could prescribe a higher concentration for you as an injection. You can then order these ampoules from the pharmacy.

For the liquid form of glutathione, you should read the package leaflet carefully. It should tell you exactly how many drops you need per day.

Otherwise, you can only try to slowly introduce glutathione. Since the absorption of glutathione in your body has no side effects, it should not be a problem to gradually reduce the amount.

Additional ingredients

You will not find a product on the open market that contains only glutathione. Each manufacturing company will create their tablets, ointments or tinctures according to their own recipes.

The active ingredient glutathione will be present as the main ingredient, but other additional substances may be added to a capsule or ointment.

Sometimes these very additional ingredients are brought to the fore as purely promotional measures.

In most cases, these additives consist of further vitamins or other food supplements. In most cases, the intake is harmless.

Facts worth knowing about glutathione

Why are commercial products called “reduced” glutathione?

Artificially produced glutathione is a compound of amino acids whose molecules have been reduced.

This is the only way that glutathione can be effective in your body.

Does glutathione also help the environment?

Plants use glutathione to absorb harmful substances from the environment. Aquatic plants, for example, bind toxic substances from the water in their own cells and then repel them.

Other plants, for example, draw heavy metals or pesticides from the air and store them.

The air is thus freed from pollutants and the toxins are simply disposed of when the plants are harvested.
