Garden chair covers: buying and evaluation criteria

To help you decide for yourself which garden chair cover is best suited to you and your garden furniture, we have collected some criteria here. They can help you find the ideal garden chair cover.

You can find out which criteria you can use to select your garden chair cushions below:

Of course, these criteria are not the only things you can look for when buying. They are only intended to give you an idea of what to look for.

There are no standard dimensions for garden chairs. This means that you should measure your garden chairs carefully before buying the right cushion. This way you can be sure that the cushion really fits your chair.

The cushions from the manufacturer of the garden chairs usually fit best, as they naturally match their cushions to the furniture. Especially with special shapes, such as a trapezoidal or round backrest, you often have to use the manufacturer’s cushions.

Particularly with special shapes, you often have to use the upholstery from the garden chair manufacturer.

In addition to the shape of the chair, it also depends on what shape you personally like best. Here you should ask yourself whether you want a cushion for the entire chair, i.e. seat and backrest, or whether a seat cushion is enough for you and you don’t need anything for the backrest.

For chairs with high backrests, there is often an extra headrest attached to the cushion. Here, too, your personal preferences are the most important decision criterion.

If the cushions are used frequently, the question quickly arises as to whether they are washable, ideally machine-washable. In order to avoid unpleasant surprises when you wash the cushions for the first time, you should find out what you need to look out for when washing them before you buy them.

Most cushions can be washed at 30°C in the washing machine. However, some should only be hand washed or only the cover can be washed. To be prepared for this, you should pay attention to the information on the cushion.

Many garden chair cushions have a removable cover, which can often be opened with a zip. This has the advantage that you can wash only the cover, which usually gets dirty the quickest, and do not have to wash the whole cushion every time. However, you should pay attention to whether only the cover is washable or also the cushion itself.

Since garden chair cushions are usually used outdoors, the weather resistance of the cushions is of course an important aspect. Depending on the use, it is particularly important that the material of the cushion is waterproof and does not get damaged by cold and heat.

Some materials are more water-repellent, others soak up water. With cushions that absorb water, you should be careful if you store them permanently in the wet. Mould can easily form if the cushions are not allowed to dry completely on a regular basis. It is therefore recommended to choose water-repellent materials. However, if you care for and store the cushions properly, water-absorbent fabrics are not a problem, just a little more care is needed.

Both rain and sun can damage the cushions. Water-repellent, colour-fast materials need a little less care than other cushions.

However, in the case of permanent outdoor storage, it is not only the rain that is an important factor, but also the sun. Many natural fibres can dry out so quickly. Synthetic materials are usually more robust here and fade less quickly. So if you want to leave garden chair cushions out in the sun for a longer period of time in the summer, plastic can be a little more colourfast.

The material of the cushions can also vary greatly. Garden chair cushions can be made of both artificial materials, such as polyester, and natural materials, such as cotton. The following table gives a brief overview of the different materials.

Material Advantages Disadvantages
Cotton natural fibre, skin-friendly, absorbent, pleasant seating comfort absorbs moisture (rain) well, long time to dry, fades easily
Linen natural fibre, hard-wearing, pleasantly cool, soft fades easily, low elasticity
Polyester lightfast, weatherproof, elastic, dries quickly
Polyacrylic very dimensionally stable, soft seating comfort, very elastic easy to charge electronically

Generally speaking, synthetic fibres are more robust and weatherproof. Natural fibres are often more pleasant on the skin. It all depends on your preferences and the use of the cushions what is best for you.

In addition to the fabric of the cover, the filling is of course also important. Here, too, cotton can be used. However, the filling usually consists of foam flakes or a foam blank. The filling determines the firmness of the cushion. This in turn is a matter of taste and depends on your preferences.

Garden chair cushions: frequently asked questions and answers

Not only is the choice of garden chair cushions important, but proper use and storage are also essential so that you can enjoy the cushions for a long time. That’s why we answer the most important questions about garden chair covers below.

What are garden chair cushions suitable for?

Garden chair cushions are the ideal cushions and seat pads for your garden furniture. Anything on the balcony, terrace or in the garden has to withstand much different conditions than upholstery indoors. For this purpose, there are extra garden chair cushions to provide optimal seating comfort outdoors.

Garden chair cushions are suitable for all the chairs and benches you have on your balcony or in your garden.

Depending on the chair, different cushions with different sizes and different fastenings are suitable. The thickness and firmness of the cushions, on the other hand, is entirely up to you.

Another special feature of garden chair cushions is that they can be stored outside permanently, at least in summer, as long as they are protected from rain and strong sunlight. This way, they don’t take up any space indoors and you can store them on a covered terrace or in a garden box, for example.

What types of garden chair covers are there?

The type of garden chair cover you choose depends entirely on your garden chairs. Depending on the level of comfort, garden chair cushions are divided into seat cushions, seat cushions and back cushions and reclining cushions. What makes up the different cushions is described in the following table:

Type special features
Seat cushion cushion only for seat surface
Seat and back cushion cushion for seat surface, cushion for backrest, height of back cushion depends on the height of the backrest of the garden chair
Reclining cushion cushion on seat surface, backrest and footrest, only suitable for chairs with footrest (e.g. deck chairs)

Which cushion is right for you depends first and foremost on your garden chairs and how comfortable you feel. Not all types of cushions fit all chairs. For example, you must consider whether your chair has a high or low backrest.

For some chairs, no back cushion is suitable at all. To be on the safe side, you should always measure the chairs. This is the only way to be sure that the cushions will really fit.

What does a garden chair cushion cost?

Garden chair cushions are available in different set sizes. Individual cushions start at around €10, cushions with backrests at around €15. However, it is often cheaper to buy sets instead of individual cushions for entire garden chair sets. Sets of 4 are available from around €25. For particularly comfortable cushions, you can spend up to about 300 € per piece; these usually advertise special materials.

Type and set price
Single cushions without backrest from 10 €
Single cushions with backrest from 15 €
Cushion with backrest Set of 4-6 40-120 €
Cushion without backrest Set of 4-6 25-50 €

What alternatives are there to garden chair cushions?

There are hardly any sensible alternatives for the use of garden chair cushions.

If the covers of the cushions are no longer attractive, you can get creative and sew new covers yourself. This way, you don’t have to replace the entire cushion every time and there is less waste. Cotton fabrics in particular can be sewn well and are a nice alternative to new cushions.

Of course, you don’t urgently need garden chair covers for your garden furniture. However, you should consider whether it is a long-term solution for you to sit directly on the wood or plastic of the chairs. However, some chairs are made of very soft wood or plastic, so they are very comfortable even without a cushion.

Of course you can also use garden chairs without a cushion if it is comfortable for you.

For occasional use, you can of course also use cushions and pillows that are actually intended for indoor use. However, it is important to store the cushions indoors after each use. These cushions are not designed to be exposed to the weather and may wear out more quickly than garden chair cushions.

How do I wash garden chair cushions?

With many garden chair cushions, you can remove the covers and wash them separately. These are usually the first to get dirty and therefore need to be washed most often. For the exact details, it is best to look directly at the covers, where washing instructions are usually included. For covers, you can expect them to be machine-washable at 30 °C.

The covers of the cushions can usually be removed and washed in the washing machine.

You can see whether you can wash the cushions yourself by the corresponding symbols and usually also on the packaging of the cushions.

It is best to find out about the washability of the cushions beforehand so that you know what to expect when the cushions get dirty. Some cushions can only be hand washed.

If you cannot remove the cover, you will have to wash it together with the pillow. You can usually wash such pillows at 30°C in the washing machine. However, it is still more work than just washing the covers. You may not be able to fit all the cushions in one machine and they may take longer to dry.

In any case, the cushions should be completely dry before you store them again. Otherwise there is a risk that they will become mouldy in the long term.

How do I store garden chair covers?

Although garden chair cushions are usually weatherproof, it is not advisable to leave them outside all year round in all weathers without protection. They quickly show signs of wear and are soon no longer attractive. You should therefore protect the cushions from the weather when storing them. There are basically two ways to do this:

  • Outdoor storage: best in a box, protected from rain and sun
  • Indoor storage: best in a cushion bag or in a cupboard, protected from moisture

If the box is not covered, you should make sure that it is waterproof to prevent mould from forming on the cushions. If you don’t have room for such a box, it’s best to store the garden chair cushions indoors, at least in winter. In summer, you can also put them outside in a place that is protected from wind and rain.

For indoor storage, it is advisable to buy a cushion bag. This way you can easily pack and transport the cushions. The cushion bag should always be dry, otherwise the cushions will become damp, which has the same effect as storing them outside in the rain.

How do I dispose of garden chair cushions?

Even with optimal storage and cleaning, garden chair cushions will of course eventually become unusable after years of use. Then, at the latest, the question arises of how to dispose of garden chair covers properly.

Most garden chair cushions can simply be disposed of in the non-recyclable waste. If the cushions are too large or bulky for residual waste, they can also be disposed of as bulky waste. For bulky waste, or if you are not sure, you can ask your local authority.

To find the ideal garden chair cushion, you should pay attention to the fit, the material, the weather resistance and the washability of the cushions. You can decide according to the shape and size of your garden chairs, as well as your personal taste.

When using the cushions later, it is important to pay attention to how they are stored. Neither sun nor rain is good for the cushions in the long term. So store them dry and in the shade. If you want to wash the cushions, it’s best to follow the instructions on the cushions; usually you can at least wash the cover in the washing machine.
