Fondant: Frequently asked questions

What types of Fondant are there and what determines a good product?

There are two types of fondant, rolled and ready to use. Rolled is the more traditional type that you have to roll out yourself. Ready-to-use comes in a variety of colors and flavors (strawberry, chocolate) already prepared for your convenience.

A good fondant should be smooth, creamy and not too sweet. It shouldn’t have a waxy taste or feel to it. Fondants are made with sugar so they will always have some sweetness but you don’t want them to be overly sugary tasting either. You also want the flavor of your cake to come through in the fondant as well.

Who should use a Fondant?

A Fondant is a great choice for anyone who wants to have an easy time with their cake. It’s perfect if you want your cake to look like it came from the bakery, but don’t have the patience or skill required by other types of icing. The fondant will give you that professional-looking finish without all of the work.

Based on what criteria should you buy a Fondant?

There are a number of things to consider when buying fondant. First, you need to decide whether you want ready-made or homemade fondant. Homemade is more expensive but it tastes better and has no preservatives in it – so if that’s important for your cake then go with the homemade option. The next thing to think about is how much money do I have? If you don’t mind spending $50 on a bag of Fondant then there are some really good options out there like Satin Ice (my personal favorite), Cakes Decorating Company, Wilton etc… These companies make great quality product at an affordable price point. However, if cost is not an issue and you would rather spend $100+ dollars on one bag of Fondants than this might be something worth considering as well. You can buy from local bakeries who sell their own brand of Gumpaste/Fondant such as Sweet Celebrations or Cake Artistry which will give them exclusive rights over selling these brands in your area – however they tend to charge higher prices because they know people won’t shop around too much since its convenient for them being right down the road from where we live

The first thing you need to look out for is the quality of fondant. It should be soft and smooth, not hard or sticky. You can check this by pressing your finger on it – if it leaves an indentation then that’s a good sign. Also make sure there are no lumps in the Fondant as these will affect how well it rolls out later on. If you don’t like one brand over another just because they have different packaging (and price) then go with what works best for you.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Fondant?

Advantages

Fondant is a sugar paste that can be rolled out and used to cover cakes. It has the advantage of being easy to work with, as it does not need refrigeration before use and will keep for several months if stored in an airtight container.

Disadvantages

Fondant is not as flexible as gum paste. It does not have the same elasticity and can crack if it dries out or gets too dry.
