  • A folder is an instrument or tool that allows us to store and order any type of document. It is an item that can be used to hand in papers or our important documents, as well as to carry it as if it were our class notebook.
  • All three types of folders are super useful, only some are less durable and more expensive than others. The first is the elastic binder, made of a cheap and flimsy material that works for temporary tasks. Second is the clamp binder, so you can clip your papers together. Finally, there are the professional ones.
  • To choose the best folder on the market, you must take into account the use you can make of it, the dimensions or size it has, the materials it is made of and other extra elements such as additional space and its appearance.

What is a folder and what are its advantages?

The folder is an instrument or tool used to store or organise different types of documents. There are folders of different sizes, which adapt to the requirements of their users. They are also made of different materials to make them more resistant and attractive.

All jobs that require paperwork or documentation are likely to use this product. For example, clinics and hospitals often use them to keep patient records. While in office jobs they are an essential part of the working day, as paperwork is handled all the time.

They are excellent tools for storing school and university work. Recently, however, ring binder models have been replacing notebooks to a lesser extent. This is because a notebook is useless when you run out of pages, while you can fill a folder.

Elastic, clamp or professional binder – What should you pay attention to?

Imagine going to buy a binder and finding thousands of varieties in the shop, an unexpected situation. The best thing about a product having variants is that each of these can offer you something that the other cannot, for this very reason it is necessary to know them.

Elastic. The elastic folder is one that is usually made of cardboard or plastic and contains strips to hold both “wings”. They are the cheapest and most common, but they solve the most pressing moments such as handing in a job. They are not durable.

With clamps or rings. When it comes to folders, those with clamps or rings are the most popular in offices and among students because they can be used to organise important documents or as a notebook. There are models that can last up to a year.

Professional. The so-called “professional” folders are those that look like a work portfolio. They usually have zips and are padded, so they are more resistant to falls and liquid spills. They are the most expensive, but also the most durable.

Purchasing criteria

To have the best folder in your property, that product that adapts to your needs, you only need to consider certain factors that will give you the possibility of choosing between one model or another. So here we show them to you so that you don’t miss anything.

The reason why we buy folders and other stationery products is to create great things or to make our life easier. Undoubtedly, the folder does the latter by providing protection and order to our papers. Following this, the main factor of buying such a product is the use we give to it, like these here.

Useful for school. The first use that comes to mind for folders is as school supplies. The elastic model works for handing in assignments, the ring binder is great as a substitute for a notebook, while for the more sophisticated, there’s the professional folder. If you are a student, consider it.

Office work. Filing files, business strategies, newsletters, human resources documents and other documents are used in an office. With folders we can store them and keep them in order in a filing cabinet. Without a doubt, any type of folder is perfect for office work.

Other work. There is an endless number of work spaces that need the use of folders to order or file different information. The majority prefer to buy collections of the simplest variant if they are for storage, but if you will use the folder constantly, it is advisable to use a clamp folder or even a professional one.

Crafts. Who hasn’t seen a decorated folder? When creativity is activated in our brain it is best to let it work. For this kind of things we recommend using elastic binders, they are cheaper and their materials lend themselves to create incredible designs with your own hands.

Manufacturing materials

The manufacturing materials is one of the purchasing factors that directly influences the price of the product and how long it will last. Of course, this makes it one of the most important. It all depends on the expectation you have or what you are looking for from a folder.

Plastic. Reliable and cheap, that’s what we all love about plastic. This material as the main element of a folder can come in two types, hard and soft. Both protect your documents, only one is rigid and the other can be turned upside down. If you want a resistant and cheap folder, buy a plastic one.

Cardboard. Do you need to protect some documents from dirt or to file them? Cardboard folders are suitable for this job and the best thing is that they are the cheapest on the market. The only thing we can reproach cardboard for is its weakness to twists and spills. Usually the elastic ones are made of this material.

Textiles. Textile material is usual in professional folders, it is usually padded and gives a very elegant appearance. One of the advantages of using textiles, especially water-repellent ones, is that the resistance and duration of the folder is greater (up to more than one year). The only disadvantage is that it is the most expensive material.

The size of a folder is providential, especially if we will keep sheets of a certain size or if we only want a small product so as not to have to carry something huge. This factor modifies your comfort or the usefulness of the folder, that’s why you should consider it before buying.

Small. Everyone deserves a product that meets their requirements and if your requirement is to have a lightweight folder that does not represent a nuisance, you should know that they exist in small sizes. With dimensions from 15 x 24 cm to 18 x 25 cm, small folders are used to store envelopes, invoices, notes and other documents.

Medium. The most common sheets are A4 and letter size, for storage there are medium sized folders. These have dimensions ranging from 21.5 x 29 cm to 24 x 30 cm and are the most commonly found in shops. All variables of this product have a medium version, choose your favourite.

Large. If your work demands the use of documents in official or legal size, you can acquire a professional, elastic or clamp folder with large dimensions. These are between 21.5 x 35.5 cm and 23.5 x 37 cm. None of your documents will be damaged although they can certainly be uncomfortable to carry.

Extra elements: design and additional space

Our last factor is a couple of extra elements that folders have and that you will surely find great, especially if you are a lover of personalisation and order. Before buying your desired folder, consider the design or appearance and the extra space it gives you.

Design. Who doesn’t like a folder with their favourite colour, cool details and amazing designs? Stay away from folders that don’t make you laugh or say who you are, unless you are going to deliver them to a bank. Design is a buying factor, but one that you should choose to be in harmony with life.

Extra space. It is good to have more space in a folder, to have pockets where we can put our pencils, erasers, highlighters and anything that is of prime necessity in our work or student environment. We advise you to think about whether it is worth giving up a few extra pesos for this.
