The Best Executive Chair: Our Picks
Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying an executive chair
What is an executive chair and what are its advantages compared to a conventional office chair?
An executive chair can be classified as an office chair or swivel chair. The difference with a conventional office chair is that an executive chair is usually of a higher quality than a simple swivel chair and has several functions. Since this chair is often found in the upper echelons of the executive suite, the name “executive chair” has become synonymous with high-quality office chairs.
The advantages of an executive chair compared to other types of office chairs, or even a simple chair without a swivel function, lie primarily in the mobility that results from using the chair.
On average, people spend 11.5 hours a day sitting. This puts an enormous strain on the back if there is a lack of movement or if we sit in a rigid position for long periods of time.
Many executive chairs offer an adjustable seat position, a rocker mechanism and lumbar support. A high-quality executive chair can therefore undoubtedly meet ergonomic requirements better than a conventional, cheap office chair.
What does an executive chair cost?
The higher the price of an executive chair, the more adjustment options and functions it usually offers. High-quality executive chairs, for example, allow the armrests to be adjusted in three axes, whereas cheaper models either only allow height adjustment or none at all. Likewise, the price of the office furniture also depends, of course, on its cover material. On average, the price of an executive chair is between 50 and 300 euros.
What functions should the ideal executive chair have?
In order to meet the guidelines for an ergonomic sitting posture, an executive chair must fulfil a number of requirements. This is particularly important to prevent back pain or to alleviate it if it is already present. As already described, high-quality swivel chairs usually have adjustable armrests. In addition, an executive chair should definitely allow for adjustment of the seat height and seat angle to enable an ideal fit to the back and body size.
Furthermore, a good swivel chair should offer the possibility to adjust the height of the backrest in order to support the back individually in the necessary places.
The chair should also be in the ideal middle ground between high seating comfort and effective support function. Because upholstery that is too soft does not contribute to ergonomic support of the back.
But padding that is too hard is also unable to adapt to the body shape of the sitter and is therefore also not a good choice. The degree of hardness of the chair that suits you best depends first and foremost on your weight. If you are rather heavy, i.e. if you weigh 90 kg or more, we recommend an executive chair with harder upholstery, as your body would quickly sink in with softer upholstery. If you are a rather thin person, i.e. you weigh 50 kg or more, we recommend a softer upholstery.
The following table gives you a brief overview:
|from 50 kg||Soft – if the executive chair is too hard, the seat quickly becomes uncomfortable|
|from 90 kg||Hard – if the executive chair is too soft, you quickly sink into the upholstery|
Decision: What types of executive chairs are there and which is the right one for you?
Basically, you can distinguish between 3 types of executive chairs:
- Executive chair with genuine leather upholstery
- Executive chair with imitation leather cover
- Executive chair with fabric cover
Due to the different areas of application and your own preferences, a certain executive chair is best suited for you. Because of this and the fact that not every executive chair is the same, there are different advantages and disadvantages in use.
We would therefore like to introduce you to the different types in the following section and help you find out which executive chair is right for you. For this purpose, we will present the above-mentioned types in more detail and clearly illustrate exactly what their advantages and disadvantages are.
What distinguishes an executive chair with genuine leather upholstery and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Executive chairs with genuine leather upholstery are characterised by their durability. Genuine leather also offers a high level of comfort and exudes a certain aesthetic appeal. Although imitation leather looks very real to the layman, there are some clear characteristics that distinguish genuine leather from imitation leather. The feel and smell of genuine leather are unmistakable, as is the texture of the surface.
When buying, care should be taken to ensure that the manufacturer’s claims are true, as unfortunately many try to mislead the buyer. Genuine leather also offers positive temperature regulation by warming in winter and cooling in summer.
The disadvantages of genuine leather are, on the one hand, the significantly higher price and, on the other hand, the increased need for care. Genuine leather must be treated constantly with care products to ensure maximum durability. In this case, however, genuine leather covers also last for a very long time.
What distinguishes an executive chair with imitation leather upholstery and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
In most cases, imitation leather covers are used for executive chairs between 100-300 euros – they are therefore significantly cheaper than genuine leather models. Another advantage is the simple care of imitation leather – the surface can be easily wiped with a damp cloth and does not require any special cleaning agents.
At the same time, however, imitation leather is also much more susceptible to damage; the imitation leather coating can crack quickly and chafe more quickly than real leather.
Another negative aspect is the surface of imitation leather, which feels uncomfortable on prolonged contact with the skin and is not breathable, which means that sitting for long periods can quickly lead to sweat stains.
In some cases, different materials are used in one model, but only one is mentioned in the general description. Therefore, you should always look very carefully and, if in doubt, simply ask.
What distinguishes an executive chair with a fabric cover and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
A fabric cover is a good alternative to a leatherette cover, as both are in roughly the same price category. However, executive chairs with fabric upholstery are much rarer than those with imitation leather or genuine leather upholstery.
Fabric upholstery is characterised by its colour diversity and individuality – unlike imitation leather and genuine leather, not only black, white and brown shades are used. Fabric covers offer a pleasant feel-good surface that also absorbs perspiration.
However, the colour of fabric covers can change after prolonged and intensive use. In addition, a fabric cover is very susceptible to stains of any kind, which are often difficult or even impossible to remove.
When buying an executive chair with a fabric cover, it should also be noted that both human and animal hair can very quickly get caught in fabric – especially in a household with several animals, this can lead to an unpleasant problem.
Buying criteria: You can use these criteria to compare and evaluate executive chairs
In the following section, we will show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate executive chairs. This will make it easier for you to decide which office chair is best for you. In summary, these are:
- Functionality & features
- Workmanship & material
Functionality & features
Specific features of an executive chair are, in particular, the thick padding of the seat and the backrest. In addition, executive chairs are usually always offered with armrests.
Executive chairs are also characterised by the high backrest, their padded neck section and the thick support for the thighs.
For gamers, there are also some very sporty models on the market that are more suitable for home use. These sporty executive chairs usually have thinner upholstery than more classic models. The design is more like the sports seat of a racing car. This is particularly evident in the backrest, which is narrower and more curved in the sporty executive chair than in the classic version.
The following table provides you with a brief overview:
|Type of office swivel chair||Description|
|Executive chair||Optically rather elegant, thick upholstery, backrest more curved|
|Gamers chair||Optically rather sporty, thinner upholstery, backrest resembles a racing car seat|
Workmanship & materials
When it comes to the workmanship of an executive chair, the principle that the higher the price, the better the workmanship usually applies. However, even a relatively inexpensive executive chair can be an appropriate option for the desired use.
The material of an executive chair, like most other chairs, is either imitation leather, genuine leather or a fabric cover, for example microfibre.
Most executive chairs offer a very high level of comfort at the workplace due to their high mobility, i.e. the rocking mechanism, the soft upholstery and the existing armrests, and are also ergonomic.
n sedentary jobs, the average worker often spends 7.5 hours or more in the chair. While the first few hours may be fine, by the halfway mark at the latest we are trying to shift our weight forward or to one side. We sit slouched and tense, which can cause acute and chronic back pain. It is therefore important that you choose a chair that is well adapted to your back and, above all, that you can adjust the height so that you can support yourself well with your arms and legs.
We especially recommend buying an executive chair if you work in your own office or home office. Often freelancers who work from home spend hours sitting on the sofa or kitchen chair to work. This can cause considerable damage and lead to back problems in the long term.
Facts worth knowing on the subject of executive chairs
How can I repair an executive chair myself?
First of all, it must be determined why exactly the chair has a defect and whether it can be repaired at all. A common defect of office chairs is the failure of the gas spring. You can recognise this by the fact that the swivel chair sags as soon as you sit on it.
If this happens, however, the chair is not a case for the dustbin, but can be repaired relatively easily from home.
There is usually a lever mechanism under the seat that operates a small valve at the top of the gas spring (height adjustment). Dust can quickly accumulate in this valve, which hardens in combination with the chair’s grease. As a result, the valve may no longer function properly.
To solve this problem, you should first remove the seat of your executive chair and put the chair in the highest position. From there, you can clean the valve with either a compressed air spray or a multifunctional spray such as WD40 by operating the valve very often in parallel or after spraying.
