The exact date of the invention of candyfloss is unclear. The first reports can be found in literature between the 16th and 17th centuries in recipe books. In 1897, William J. Morrison and John C. Wharton filed a patent in Nashville for a machine to make candyfloss.

National Cotton Candy Day is celebrated every year on 7 December. Well, it’s not a highly official holiday, but it is celebrated by many Americans.
It is often claimed that candyfloss was only invented in 1897 and presented at a world’s fair in St. Louis a few years later, because the improved machine was patented here. This misconception even made it into popular literature, so it is widely circulated as a legend.
How is candyfloss made?
In a candyfloss machine, about five to six grams of household sugar or isomalt – maple syrup is also often used in North America – are heated, liquefied and spun by centrifugal force for one serving. Granulated sugar is heated on a heating coil to the flow point at around 150 °C and spun away from the spinning head by centrifugal force.
On its way from the spinning head, the liquid sugar solidifies into threads and is wound up in a round tub with a stick as candyfloss. The resulting threads are not crystalline like the original substance, but amorphous. Therefore, they are soft like cotton wool. The candyfloss also owes its name to this cotton wool-like consistency.
Candyfloss can be coloured by adding food colouring. Additional flavourings of numerous flavours, such as blueberry, strawberry, cherry or melon, increase the range.
How can I prepare candyfloss correctly?
When you have a craving for candyfloss in addition to your other cravings for ice cream and chocolate, you simply get the candyfloss machine out of the cupboard and prepare the appropriate ingredients. The most common method for making candyfloss “on your own” with the candyfloss machine is the following:
You need about three to four tablespoons of sugar. Ideally, white sugar and not brown sugar is used for this. The latter sometimes proves to be more “unruly” in the course of preparation, so the procedure could be a little more time-consuming overall. The sugar is filled into the container provided for this purpose, which is located at the bottom of the machine, usually in the middle.
Then it is only necessary to press the start button and bring the appliance to the required temperature of around 180 degrees Celsius. As soon as the temperature is reached, the sugar starts to become liquid. In the course of this, the spindle head is immediately activated so that thin threads of sugar are formed by these rotations, which now settle at the bottom of the container in the machine.
At this point, at the latest, you should take a thin wooden stick and stretch these threads with skilful grips. Steady turning is now important to stretch the delicious sugar threads evenly and to achieve a result worth seeing.
If you don’t have the opportunity to make your own candyfloss with your own candyfloss machine, you can either use a saucepan to produce the popular delicacy. However, this involves a considerable amount of time.
It also requires far more sugar – about five to six cups full. Here are the ingredients for candyfloss without a candyfloss machine.
