The Best Cordless Hoover: Our Picks

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a cordless hoover

What is a cordless hoover?

As the name suggests, it is a hoover that is powered by a simple rechargeable battery. This makes doing the housework much quicker and, above all, more comfortable.

Who hasn’t experienced this: you want to quickly vacuum another room, suddenly feel resistance and realise that the cable is no longer long enough.

A cordless hoover is your ideal solution here: since these household appliances no longer have a mains plug, you can move around much more freely. This is also practical if you want to vacuum the car or the garage.

Another important aspect is that you no longer need a dust bag with most appliances. The integrated dust bins of cordless hoovers can be easily emptied and reused. This saves you a lot of hassle, because buying new dust bags is no longer necessary.

Who is a cordless hoover suitable for?

Generally speaking, a cordless hoover belongs in every household. There are now many different types and models of these devices, so there is something suitable for just about everyone.

Who hasn’t heard the saying: “Housework doesn’t do itself”? Maybe not all of it, but at least some of it. Who would have thought a few years ago that this work could be done completely by robotic vacuum cleaners? However, if you can’t keep your feet still and simply watch, you will at least be interested in a cordless stick hoover.

The devices are between a good one metre and 1.20 metres high. So they are not too bulky or heavy. However, particularly tall people (over 1.90 metres) might be advised not to buy one, as the constant bending could be a bit of a strain on the back in the long run. It would be worth considering a hoover with a cord, as these are larger with telescopic tubes.

Kill two birds with one stone: Save time and nerves!

sor: text; float: none; background-color: #ffffff;”>For most of us, however, size should not be a problem. With cordless hoovers, housework can now be done much more comfortably. What’s more, in today’s society, time is becoming an increasingly important issue. With a cordless vacuum cleaner, it simply goes much faster than with conventional vacuums, so you kill two birds with one stone.

Do you live on several floors? Then it will be worth your while to think about a battery hoover, because you don’t have to keep looking for a power socket.

How many watts should a cordless hoover have?

As a rule of thumb, you can’t go wrong with a battery that is at least 18 volts! Some models that have such a powerful battery deliver consistently good performance on hard and smooth floors as well as on textile and carpeted floors.

sor: text; float: none; background-color: #ffffff;”>In fact, a cordless hoover cannot develop the performance that would be comparable with a corded device. The reason is simply that the hoovers would be much too heavy and too expensive.

However, it should be emphasised that cordless hoovers do not have to hide when it comes to cleaning performance. On the contrary, most devices use a rotating brush to compensate for the reduced suction power. This makes it possible to pick up the dirt from the floor or carpet and whirl it up. The suction power must then only be sufficient to transport the dirt into the dirt container.

It is therefore advisable not only to pay attention to the power rating, but to make sure that the device is equipped with a rotating brush, among other things.

What does a cordless hoover cost?

Very simple handheld hoovers are available from around 20 euros. However, it depends on what you expect from a cordless hoover. Of course, the price ultimately determines the quality of the product. If you have pets, for example, you should always make sure that the hoover has a so-called brush roller. However, you should keep in mind that these can quickly block on very cheaply produced devices.

It also depends on whether you are looking for a normal replacement for a stick hoover, whether you want to switch to a robot hoover or whether you want to kill two birds with one stone and are interested in a 3-in-1 wet and dry vacuum cleaner.

Robot vacuum cleaners are available from around 5 euros on Amazon. Whether the product ultimately meets your expectations for such a low price is up to you to decide. The comparative winner from 2020 in Stiftung Warentest costs around 230 euros.

Type Average price
Hand hoover 50 euros
Stick hoover 249 euros
2-in-1 hoover 150 euros
Robot hoover 180 euros
Wet and dry hoover 700 euros

If a 3-in-1 wet and dry vacuum sounds interesting to you, you will find some offers starting at 200 euros. This is suitable for both hard floors and carpets. It vacuums, washes and dries in one wash – literally.

In general, however, it should be mentioned that a good cordless hoover can hardly be found for less than 200 euros. Good cordless hoovers with high suction power and a good battery are very well priced by the manufacturers. Inexpensive appliances are often only recommended as second appliances, as they often lack battery capacity, suction power and/or runtime. Unfortunately, the old saying applies here: If you buy cheap, you buy twice!

In summary, it can be said that the price range here is very wide. Before buying, it is advisable to consider what you expect from a cordless hoover and what you are prepared to spend on a cordless hoover. When comparing the individual models, you should pay particular attention to the quality and performance in addition to the price.

Which manufacturers are there?

There are many different brands and manufacturers of cordless hoovers. Two of the best-known names here are probably Dyson and Bosch. Although they are also one of the most expensive brands, the Dyson models in particular are always convincing in tests.

Other names worth mentioning are, for example:

  • AEG
  • Miele
  • Vorwerk
  • Siemens
  • Kärcher
  • Nilfisk
  • Philips
  • Hoover

Which cordless hoover should I get for pet hair?

For pet hair, make sure that the cordless hoover has either a special pet hair nozzle or a floor nozzle with an integrated brush roller. These are highly recommended because they are driven by a motor and rotated by an air stream. This enables an improved pick-up of fibres and lint as well as hair.

Furthermore, there are certain attachments for many models, which is something to look out for when buying. Fibres and hairs are often picked up better than with conventional hoovers with a mains cable and without a brush. However, the brushes should only be easy to clean.

You can remove pet hair particularly well with a wet vacuum cleaner. This is because the hair that is sucked in is bound directly in the water.

What is the alternative to a cordless hoover?

A normal hoover with a cable, as we are probably all familiar with it, is the obvious choice. You simply plug a classic hoover into a socket and start cleaning. Apart from the cable, the classic hoover differs from a cordless hoover in that it has a bag or container that needs to be emptied. If it is a bag, there are of course additional costs to buy them again and again.

You will have to find out for yourself whether a classic hoover with a mains cable or a rechargeable hoover is best for your purposes.

Decision section: What types of cordless hoovers are there and which is the right one for me?

As already mentioned in part, there are different types of cordless hoovers:

  • Hand hoover
  • Stick Vacuum Cleaner
  • 2-in-1 hoover
  • Robot Vacuum Cleaner
  • Wet and dry vacuum cleaner

It all depends on what you want to buy a cordless hoover for. You should answer the following questions beforehand: Do you want a second vacuum cleaner? Or do you want it to replace a classic corded hoover that you still have? Do you have pets – if so, should your cordless household helper ensure that these annoying hairs don’t lie everywhere?

In the following section, we would like to make the decision easier for you, to give you an even better overview of the individual advantages and disadvantages of the different types.

What distinguishes a hand-held hoover and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

The little battery-powered household helpers are perfect for cleaning up small messes as soon as they arise. They are also very good at getting into even the smallest corners. To be honest, however, they are no substitute for a real vacuum cleaner. But they are definitely worth considering as a second vacuum cleaner, especially because the small battery-powered hand vacuums are not too expensive.

The small devices are perfect for quick cleaning in between. Maybe you have children and are annoyed that there are biscuit crumbs on the sofa where you just vacuumed. In these cases, this inexpensive alternative saves you from having to reach for the more expensive stick hoover.

  • Fast, uncomplicated
  • Handy
  • Cost-effective
  • Independent of the mains connection
  • Low performance
  • Short battery life
  • Small dust container

What distinguishes a stick hoover and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

Stick hoovers can be used quite normally in the household. They have the usual characteristics of a conventional hoover with a cord. Due to the constant development of technology, the cordless stick hoover has already overtaken the usual hoover in many households.

Not only because they do not have a mains plug and thus have a larger action radius, they are also often quiet and space-saving.

  • Flexible handling
  • Greater manoeuvrability, unlimited action radius
  • Bagless, elimination of extra costs
  • Convenience
  • Lower suction power
  • Limited battery life
  • Mostly expensive to buy
  • Small dust container

What distinguishes a 2-in-1 hoover and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Probably the most popular alternative of the cordless hoovers is the 2-in-1 cordless hoover, as this form includes a wand and still a hand hoover. The previously described types are found here in only one product.

  • Flexible use
  • Cost-saving (2-in-1)
  • Unlimited action radius
  • Lower suction power
  • Limited battery power
  • Small dust container

What distinguishes a car hoover or vacuum robot and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

Robot vacuum cleaners are practical helpers that do the work for you because they usually work fully automatically. They work to clean floors of daily dirt, crumbs and hair. However, it’s fair to say that they don’t completely replace a full-fledged hoover. They just can’t get into every little corner.

They often can’t get over thresholds and also have problems with some carpets. On smooth floors without major obstacles, however, they can definitely score plus points. If you have children and don’t want to reach for a hoover three times a day, you could really think about this alternative.

  • Automatic
  • No presence required
  • Reduce the use of a conventional hoover
  • Charging automatically
  • Rather expensive
  • Can’t fully replace floor vacuum
  • Corners, thresholds and obstacles pose problems
  • Sensitivity of sensors

What distinguishes a wet and dry vacuum cleaner and what are their advantages and disadvantages?

A handheld wet vacuum cleaner is intended for damp and dry dirt residues. It is a combination device because, unlike the models presented so far, there is a water filter inside the device. If you do not want to use the hoover as a water hoover, you can also use it as a normal stick hoover for everyday use.

  • Suitable for damp and dry dirt residues
  • No bag and no cord
  • Easy to use
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to use with one hand due to its shape
  • Very expensive
  • Limited battery capacity
  • Older devices with integrated nickel cadmium exhibit so-called memory effect
  • Limited areas of use

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate cordless hoovers

In the following section, we would like to take a closer look at some important criteria that you can use to make your decision when looking for a cordless hoover. This will make it easier for you to decide on the product of your choice.

We would like to explain the following criteria in more detail at this point:

In the following, we explain what you should pay particular attention to before buying:

As already mentioned several times, the suction power plays a major role in the quality of the product.

The suction power is not only dependent on the voltage. Most devices use a rotating brush to compensate.

It is no secret that cordless hoovers perform somewhat worse in terms of suction power than conventional hoovers with a mains cord, because the batteries would simply be much too heavy and too expensive. Therefore, one should not orientate oneself on the standards of hoovers without rechargeable batteries. Nevertheless, the battery technology is constantly being improved, so that especially good cordless hoovers are now often equipped with lithium-ion batteries and even up to approx. 25 volts.

It is important to mention that cordless hoovers do not have to hide when it comes to cleaning performance. This is because the suction power is not only dependent on the voltage. Most devices use a rotating brush to compensate for the reduced suction power. The suction power must therefore only be sufficient to transport the dirt into the dirt container.

If you want to use your hoover every day to vacuum your flat or house, then the power of a cordless hoover is definitely quite sufficient. Because by vacuuming regularly, you won’t get too much dirt.

When buying a cordless hoover, make sure that it is equipped with a lithium-ion battery. Compared to the older nickel-metal hydride batteries, the new batteries offer many advantages in terms of charging time, durability and weight. It is not for nothing that the lithium-ion battery is now considered the heart of electric cars and hybrid vehicles.

It is also important to mention that the quality of a cordless hoover depends especially on the battery life and the suction power. It is no use if the suction power is excellent and the running time is reduced. These two factors are mutually dependent, otherwise the battery would be much too heavy and expensive.

When buying your personal test winner, make sure that it is a lithium-ion battery with the highest possible voltage.

Fortunately, many devices also have different power levels, which benefits a much longer runtime as you can easily regulate the suction power. On average, most current devices should offer runtimes of 20 to 30 minutes. The processing of lithium-ion batteries has even increased the runtime of some cordless hoovers to one hour.

Their charging time is also relatively short these days, limited to just a few hours. That’s about a third of the charging time compared to the gradually outdated nickel-metal hybrid batteries.

Suction nozzles

When deciding what to buy, it is important to keep in mind what you want to use a cordless hoover for. As mentioned above, the different suction nozzles determine the flexibility of the devices.

A distinction is made between:

Type of suction nozzle Application
Combination nozzle hand-held hoover and floor hoover in one device.
Upholstery brush cleaning of sofas, e.g.
Crevice nozzle perfect for narrow corners, sofas.
Universal floor nozzle Suitable for all surfaces
Brush attachment Perfect for removing hair. For example on carpets.
Wet nozzle Removes damp or dry dirt. Vacuums and cleans in just one step.

There are now various nozzles and attachments for many cordless hoovers. A combi-nozzle, as the name suggests, can be used on almost all surfaces. A crevice nozzle for vacuuming between upholstery and an upholstery brush is very helpful if you have pets and want to remove hair from the sofa. There are also attachments and brushes that are suitable for removing pet hair from carpets and the like.

In other words, the described attachments and nozzles characterise the different types of cordless hoovers.

Size of the collection container

As already described, cordless devices are usually bagless, so these have a collection bin instead. These have a volume of between around 0.3 and 0.5 litres and would be recommended as a guide when buying a cordless hoover.

The larger the dust container of the cordless hoover is, the more dirt particles it can logically hold before it has to be emptied.

It is very important to make sure that your device is equipped with a good filter and seal so that the dust is securely sealed and no suction power is wasted. Dyson devices, for example, have rubber seals that create a vacuum and thus securely seal the filter. A permanent filter is best here, so that you don’t have to buy a new filter. A permanent filter can also be removed, making it easier to clean.

sor: text; float: none; background-color: #ffffff;”>In addition, you should make sure that the inside of the container is not too angled, otherwise dirt can easily get stuck. Especially with cordless hoovers that can also hold liquids, it would be annoying if the container cannot be cleaned easily.

Simplicity of cleaning

sor: text; float: none; background-color: #ffffff;”>If possible, the dirt container should be cleaned after each vacuuming operation so that the suction power is not additionally limited. With most models, this can be done quite easily; with some, a spring device helps to eject fine dust as well.

sor: text; float: none; background-color: #ffffff;”>It is also practical if the container can be cleaned easily and quickly. Some models have a button that simply opens the dust box so that the contents can fall directly into the waste bin. With others, the dust box must be separated from the motor of the cordless hoover with a twisting motion or by pressing a button.

Some devices also have a fine filter on the device or inside the dirt container, which must also be cleaned at certain intervals. Brushes should also be cleaned of hair regularly. With most appliances, the brush can simply be removed, but there are also appliances where the brush is cleaned at the push of a button during operation. In this case, the hair is almost automatically cut through and sucked up.

As with almost every appliance, maintenance is always necessary if you want to handle your new acquisition sustainably and enjoy it in the long term. However, this is really limited with cordless hoovers. Depending on how many functions you expect from a hoover and how much you are willing to pay for it, the more or less will be automatically taken care of for you.

Your cordless hoover test winner should be as light as possible. Of course, it depends on whether it is a hand hoover or a floor hoover. Cordless handheld hoovers weigh between 0.8 and 1.5 kg on average. This is very light. This makes them easy to transport and versatile. Even hard-to-reach places – such as the top of a door – are easy to reach without the hoover becoming too heavy for you.

However, cordless floor hoovers can also keep up with this and cut a very good figure. With a tare weight of only around 2 kilos, you can easily and comfortably clean all floors in the household without tiring your arm.

It gets especially exciting when it comes to vacuuming over different floors and stairs, you will be happy about the lowest possible weight you have to carry. In principle, a cordless hoover weighs more than the tube of a classic hoover with a cord, but you can easily push it across the floors so that you don’t even feel the weight.
