Germany processes 440,000 tonnes of cocoa per year, which puts it in fourth place internationally. The cocoa is supplied from the African continent, where 75% of the entire cocoa harvest is grown. More than 250,000 tonnes come to Germany from the Ivory Coast. In addition, Nigeria, Ghana and Ecuador, the country of origin of the cocoa fruit, supply a large part of the cocoa processed in Germany.

The beans of the cocoa fruit are the main ingredient for our chocolate. For this reason, many people can no longer imagine their diet without cocoa. For our product comparison, we compared different types of cocoa and worked out the most important aspects for you.

Beans usually end up in the coffee machine and are therefore sold in slightly larger quantities. You can buy them between 500 g and 1 kg packs. However, since cocoa has a shelf life of up to two years, you don’t have to worry if you buy too much.

Cocoa should therefore have a higher cocoa content and not contain much sugar. That’s why we recommend that you buy a product with a cocoa content of 30-60%. These contain few additives and are therefore healthier. Cocoa with a cocoa content of 15-25% is not recommended because of the large amount of added sugar.

You can use cocoa in many ways in your kitchen. Depending on the variant, you can cook it, bake it, eat it raw or use it in your coffee machine. Cocoa is also available in capsules for your capsule machine. However, the capsules are made of a lot of plastic and are not recommended if you want to avoid plastic.

What types of cocoa are there?

We distinguish between fast-dissolving instant cocoa powder and pure and raw cocoa powder. Instant cocoa powder is especially popular with families with children because it is sweeter. The products can be easily dissolved in milk and are well suited for drinking chocolate.

If you are looking for a healthy diet and still don’t want to give up cacao, pure and raw cacao powder is suitable for you. This has a high cacao content and therefore contains only little sugar. For an even more intense taste of cacao, high-quality premium products would be suitable, as they have a particularly high cacao content.

You also have to distinguish between weakly and strongly deoiled cocoa. High-quality aromatic cocoa is weakly deoiled. This means that the residual fat content is at least 20%. Highly deoiled cocoa contains only 10% residual fat, which is why it has less cocoa flavour.

Is cocoa healthy?

Yes, cocoa has a positive effect on your health. When you consume a lot of cocoa, it leads to better blood circulation in your body. This results in lower blood pressure, which is good for your heart and blood vessels. In addition, the superfood cacao contains a lot of calcium, which has a particularly positive effect on your bones and teeth. Just 100 g of raw cacao contains 160 mg of calcium.

If you consume it frequently, however, you should make sure that the fat and sugar content is not too high. Such items increase the risk of weight gain and promote cardiovascular problems.

How to remove cocoa stains?

Here you have to see if the stain is still fresh or not. Fresh stains can usually be easily removed with cold or lukewarm water.

If the stain is already dry, it is a bit more difficult to remove it from the clothes. Again, we recommend soaking the stain in lukewarm water first. Then you can put a little vinegar on a cloth and carefully remove the residue. Finally, to remove the cocoa and vinegar smell completely, you should wash the garment in your washing machine.


When buying delicious cocoa, make sure to buy low-fat cocoa. This usually contains more fat and less sugar. It also gives you an aromatic and stronger cocoa flavour. With proper cocoa, frequent consumption of cocoa is also not a problem, as it has health benefits. For example, it reduces your blood pressure and strengthens your immune system.
