Bagged tea is therefore the perfect everyday option that saves you time and is practical to prepare. You should be aware that the type of tea can influence not only the taste, but also the amount of caffeine or intensity contained in the tea.

When it comes to teas containing cinnamon, we distinguish between green teas, black teas, fruit teas and herbal teas. The latter are infused with hot water and must then steep for between 5-10 minutes. The first two types of tea should be brewed in low-cal water and should steep for about three minutes so that the cinnamon tea does not take on a bitter note.

Cinnamon-containing herbal and fruit teas consist of plant elements such as leaves, flowers and fruit parts. The variant made from herbs is declared as medicinal tea. Black or green cinnamon teas consist of the leaves of the plant, which are either fermented or not fermented. Cinnamon teas in the green and black varieties usually contain caffeine and are therefore not suitable for children, but they quickly make feelings of tiredness disappear.

Just as versatile as the tea varieties of cinnamon tea are its tea properties. Meanwhile, properties of the cinnamon-containing hot beverage range from vegan to vegetarian to organic. Especially if you want to eat a purely plant-based diet or have allergies, the tea properties are an important aspect. As already mentioned, cinnamon teas are also available in blends with other herbs and ingredients. Among these, cinnamon tea with honey extracts is particularly popular among buyers. However, if you have an allergy to it or want to eat a vegan diet, vegan cinnamon teas are an optimal alternative for you. They contain purely plant-based substances and no animal products were used or harm done to the animal kingdom in their production. As a diabetic, you should also choose vegan cinnamon teas, as they do not contain any additional animal sugar such as honey. This way, your blood sugar level is not raised and you keep it under control. Some cinnamon teas also require insects for their production. These cinnamon teas are therefore neither vegan nor vegetarian. Insects such as the cicada Jacobiasca formosana provide the tea leaves with bites that gradually oxidise and give the cinnamon tea a special flavour. Another commercially available tea characteristic in cinnamon teas are organic teas containing cinnamon. Here, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides have been avoided in the production of organic cinnamon teas. You should also choose organic cinnamon tea if fair production factors are important to you. The cultivation of organic cinnamon teas also includes environmentally friendly cultivation and harvesting conditions, so that the cinnamon is grown sustainably, the soil is protected, the groundwater remains uncontaminated and the eco-system is not disturbed as much as possible. When you consume organic tea with cinnamon, you benefit from chemical-free ingredients, fair production conditions and natural flavour intensity.

Country of origin

As already noted, there are many varieties of cinnamon teas, which can contain three different types of cinnamon that come from different countries of origin. As cinnamon can be found especially in the latitudes of South Asia, cinnamon tea is particularly common from areas near the Indian Ocean. Among them, especially cinnamon tea from Sri Lanka and India. However, cinnamon tea often comes from the growing regions of Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Korea, Vietnam and oriental countries. Most of the cinnamon teas from the supermarket are Ceylon cinnamon, which is grown in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Latin America and Madagascar. Another type of cinnamon tea from Indonesia, which grows especially on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is cassia cinnamon. This is often used in coarser pieces for making tea or also finely ground. The third type of cinnamon tea contains Padang cinnamon from southern China or the Indonesian archipelago and tastes coarser, spicier and more bitter than Ceylon cinnamon. Since Ceylon cinnamon, Cassia cinnamon and Padang cinnamon each come from faraway exotic countries, you should be aware that all three types have to be imported for the production of cinnamon teas and long transport routes are involved. These can be expensive and environmentally damaging. Nevertheless, you should not miss out on the cinnamon hot drink as long as you consider it an exotic and scarce luxury good that you should not consume in abundance.


You can find cinnamon teas with various certifications. The organic seal of approval and the vegan certification are particularly important for many consumers. If you are looking for organic cultivation of cinnamon tea and fair production conditions, you should choose an organic cinnamon tea according to the EC Eco Regulation. The cinnamon and the other ingredients of the hot drink come from organic cultivation. If a cinnamon tea bears the organic seal of quality, you can be sure that no pesticides, herbicides or fungicides were used in the cultivation of the cinnamon. Many cinnamon teas today also carry a vegan certification. These guarantee that there are no animal products in the cinnamon tea of your choice, such as honey, caramel or condensed milk. Vegan-certified cinnamon teas usually bear the seal of the Vegan Society England, the V-Label of the Vegetarierbund Deutschland e. V. or the Vegan-Label of the vegan society Deutschland e. V., which indicate which cinnamon teas are purely plant-based.

Size of the packaging

Cinnamon teas in sachets are usually sold in packs of 20 sachets of 2 grams each. This makes them light and also practical to store, as the pack does not take up much space. In addition, the relatively small number of cinnamon tea portions means that you don’t have to worry about the shelf life of the cinnamon tea, as you will most likely consume it quickly due to its small content volume. However, as mentioned above, cinnamon teas are also sold in very large packaging volumes, especially through online shops. Especially loose cinnamon teas can often be found in packages of up to 5 kg of cinnamon tea. The quantity of cinnamon tea is very important because the longer it is stored, the lower its quality. So if you are a tea lover but consume it in moderation, it is better to buy cinnamon tea in small quantities.

Interesting facts about cinnamon tea

How should I dose cinnamon tea and when should I take it?

Cinnamon tea in sachets is often in very small doses. The sachets often weigh only 2 grams, and the amount of cinnamon in the sachet is even less, as the tea is often also fortified with other fruits and herbs.

The recommended daily dose is no more than one gram of pure cinnamon powder. So you can easily consume 3 cups of cinnamon tea in a bag per day.

However, if you consume 6 grams of cinnamon per day, you should do this for a maximum of 6 weeks and then not consume cinnamon tea for 7 days. This way you can ensure that the coumarin content in your body is not too high and you can avoid negative side effects of cinnamon tea, such as liver and stomach problems and blood clotting disorders.

Why is Ceylon cinnamon tea a better alternative than Cassia cinnamon tea?

Ceylon cinnamon and cassia cinnamon are two different types of cinnamon that can be found in cinnamon tea. As a rule, you should always choose Ceylon cinnamon tea rather than tea containing cassia cinnamon. This is because cassia cinnamon has a higher coumarin content, so that only about 0.02 grams of coumarin per kilogram of cinnamon are detected in Ceylon cinnamon, but more than a hundred times as much in cassia cinnamon.

Cinnamon powder, whether cassia cinnamon or Ceylon cinnamon, has a shelf life of about half a year.
