To help you understand what cinnamon is and what you should know about the cinnamon in cinnamon tea, we have selected a video that explains the most important facts about cinnamon.

Who is cinnamon tea suitable for and who is it not suitable for?

Cinnamon tea is suitable for many people because of its numerous and versatile health-promoting effects. Cinnamon tea is particularly suitable for you if you want to lose weight, suffer from diabetes, have severe menstrual cramps, have a cold or complain about stomach problems. If you have diabetes, cinnamon tea is a perfect natural solution as opposed to artificial medication, as the ingredients in cinnamon regulate your blood sugar levels naturally.

As cinnamon tea reduces your blood sugar levels and at the same time regulates the insulin in your body, cinnamon tea promotes weight loss.

If you want to lose a kilo or two, you should pour yourself a cup of cinnamon tea, as it ensures that your body stores less fat and that your digestion and fat burning are boosted. Also, if you are suffering from a cold, cinnamon tea can act as a natural medicine and reduce your discomfort. Due to ingredients such as vitamin C and zinc, cinnamon tea has an antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect that cures colds and relieves headaches and migraines. If you have digestive problems or stomach pains, cinnamon tea is particularly helpful as it counteracts flatulence and facilitates digestion. Cinnamon tea achieves this by helping you to digest and break down the food you eat better and faster. In addition, women with severe period pains benefit from the health-giving effects of cinnamon tea. Its warmth relaxes abdominal cramps and can also ensure regular periods, as its ingredient hydroxychalcone regulates and normalises menstruation. Cinnamon tea is also suitable for your children, as cinnamon tea is an ideal home remedy for vomiting and nausea, which you can also give to your offspring without worrying. Cinnamon tea has a stabilising effect on the circulation due to its healthy ingredients. Cinnamon tea also contains catechins, which can calm the stomach, prevent belching and reduce waves of nausea. Thus, nausea is relieved and the stomach is soothed. To help you visualise the health effects of cinnamon on your body, we have selected a video for you here. On the other hand, cinnamon also has a harmful side that can have many negative side effects, especially for pregnant women, people taking medication and people with stomach ulcers.

If you are taking medication or even antibiotics, you should not consume cinnamon tea, let alone cinnamon.

This is especially true for you if you take blood thinners or suffer from blood clotting disorders. This is because cinnamon has a blood thinning effect and can intensify a blood clotting disorder. Pregnant women should also not consume cinnamon tea as it stimulates the uterus. It stimulates blood flow and stimulates premature labour or contractions of the uterus, which can even lead to miscarriages. Shortly before birth, however, cinnamon tea can facilitate birth as it induces contractions and can thus induce birth. If you have stomach ulcers, you should also avoid cinnamon tea, as it can irritate your stomach mucous membranes. The coumarin contained in cinnamon tea can intensify stomach ulcers and can also cause liver and kidney damage in your body. So before you drink cinnamon tea, ask your doctor in what quantities and dosages you can consume the hot drink without affecting your health.

Cinnamon tea in moderation is therefore recommended for children, diabetics, women giving birth, women with severe menstrual cramps and arthritis sufferers, but not for pregnant women, breastfeeding women and people with blood clotting disorders.

How can you make your own cinnamon tea?

Of course you can make your own cinnamon tea. You can either use cinnamon sticks, tea bags, loose cinnamon tea or powder, which we will discuss in more detail in the decision section. First, pour hot boiling water over the cinnamon source of your choice and let the hot mixture sit for about 10 minutes. Then remove the cinnamon stick, tea bag or filter the loose components of the cinnamon tea from your drink. If you like, you can flavour your cinnamon tea with milk, sugar or honey to suit your individual taste.

If you decide to make your cinnamon tea with cinnamon powder, you should rather choose Ceylon cinnamon, as Cassia cinnamon contains a much higher percentage of coumarin, which can lead to the negative side effects mentioned above.

How much does cinnamon tea cost?

There is a relatively large price range between the different cinnamon teas. Depending on the content volumes, origin of the cinnamon tea, certification and brand of the tea, the cost point varies. The range can go from about 2 to 83 euros. If you are dependent on cinnamon hot drinks due to irregular menstruation, diabetes or digestive problems and you like the taste, the prices for cinnamon teas seem reasonable to us. Cinnamon teas in bags start at a price of 3 euros, although it is usually true that a package with fewer teabags is cheaper than one with a large number of bags. You can buy the powder for cinnamon tea very cheaply, as the offers start at just 2 euros. In addition, the cinnamon powder packages often have a large volume of contents, so that you can enjoy your cinnamon powder for a very long time. Cinnamon powder tends to be cheaper than cinnamon tea in bags, as loose cinnamon tea does not require the time-consuming and expensive packaging in tea bags.
Type of cinnamon tea Price
Cinnamon tea in bags 3-41 €
Cinnamon tea in powder form 2-83 €
Loose cinnamon tea 5-15 €

Loose cinnamon teas are therefore a little more expensive and you should expect them to be priced at around 5 euros. Loose cinnamon teas are often more expensive because they often carry the organic seal, are otherwise certified or have higher content volumes than cinnamon tea in tea bags. If you are interested in a loose cinnamon tea in the higher price segment, you can expect to pay around 15 euros, with prices varying depending on the country of origin and manufacturer. For powdered cinnamon teas, you can expect to pay up to 83 euros, but in return you can expect around 5 kg of cinnamon powder and a cinnamon powder that is certified organic. Expensive cinnamon teas in bags can be a little more expensive at around 41 euros. However, the higher price is justified by the refinement with other flavours such as ginger, honey and herbs and its exotic origin from Vietnam, India or Indonesia.

What is the alternative to cinnamon tea?

Teas can be made from many different fruits, spices and herbs. Each of the varieties has its own advantages and disadvantages. In the following section, we will give you a brief overview of the alternatives to cinnamon tea.
Type of alternative Description
Yarrow tea Helps against gastrointestinal-biliary disorders and stimulates digestion due to its azulene, flavones and bitter substances. Is a household remedy for loss of appetite, nausea and menstrual cramps. Promotes blood circulation, is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial and can induce labour shortly before birth.
Allspice tea Reminiscent of the taste of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Has a health-promoting effect as it stimulates blood circulation and lowers blood pressure. Supports weight loss and facilitates digestion, as allspice tea stimulates stomach acid and makes proteins easier to digest.

Each of the teas has certain benefits that are not to be sneezed at. Nevertheless, cinnamon tea seems to be superior to the others in many criteria. It is not without reason that cinnamon tea is popular all over the world and is considered a natural miracle and household remedy for various ailments, which you should, however, enjoy in moderation.

Decision: What types of cinnamon tea are there and which one is right for you?

If you have decided to buy cinnamon tea, you should note that you will find the hot cinnamon drink in 3 different alternatives:

  • Cinnamon tea in a bag
  • Loose cinnamon tea
  • Cinnamon tea in powder

The production, use and storage of the three different teas made from cinnamon each bring advantages and disadvantages. Depending on what you prefer and how you prefer to enjoy the tea, a different type is suitable for you. In the following explanatory section, we would like to make it easier for you to decide.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cinnamon tea in a bag?

In supermarkets, you can find cinnamon tea in bags as well as all the conventional teas. The advantage of cinnamon tea in bags is that it is very quick to prepare. You don’t have to spend your valuable time dosing the tea or mixing it yourself, as is the case with powdered or loose cinnamon tea. Bagged tea is therefore the perfect everyday option that saves you time and is practical to prepare. In addition, bag teas release their aroma and any caffeine they contain more quickly in hot water than powdered or loose teas. This is because the cinnamon spice in the tea bag is broken down into small pieces, but the surface of the tea bag has a larger volume than that of loose tea, which means that the aroma tastes more intense and the intensity of the cinnamon can spread more quickly in the water.

Advantages
  • Suitable for everyday use: quick and practical preparation
  • Simplified storage: has a long shelf life
  • No other kitchen utensils needed
  • Rapid aroma and caffeine development
Disadvantages
  • Tea quantity cannot be determined by the consumer
  • Ceremonial tea preparation is missed
  • Low-quality
  • Environmentally harmful tea bags
  • Often only standard varieties can be found in bags

Another advantage of cinnamon tea in bags is that it is very easy to store. It doesn’t take up much space and can be taken along because of its lightness and packaging. So you can enjoy it on the go. Enjoying cinnamon tea in a bag is also easy because you don’t need any extra kitchen utensils when you want to drink tea in a bag. Since the cinnamon tea is already portioned in bags, all you have to do is pour it in hot water and let it steep – and it’s ready! So you can do without filters or tea eggs in the future.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of loose cinnamon tea?

In contrast to its bagged variant, loose cinnamon tea shines with a flavour that is tailored to you. By making and bottling the tea yourself from start to finish, you can enjoy the traditional side of tea making and the ceremony of preparation, which can have a relaxing and meditative effect. In addition, the loose cinnamon tea convinces with a very high quality and its wide-ranging diversity in various flavours that cannot be achieved in bag teas or as powder. For example, in online shops you can find exotic loose cinnamon tea with cloves, oranges, turmeric or prickly pear, which you can only dream of in bag form.

Advantages
  • Tea quantity and intensity can be individually determined
  • Traditional tea preparation can be savoured
  • Very high quality
  • Many unusual varieties
Disadvantages
  • Not very suitable for everyday use: complex preparation
  • Additional kitchen utensils such as tea strainers required
  • Slow development of caffeine and aroma

If you prefer to enjoy a small amount of cinnamon in your tea due to health factors, you should also use loose cinnamon tea, as this is not pre-portioned as in the bag, but you can dose it individually and thus regulate its intensity. This is also an option for pregnant women who want to give birth soon and for whom the cinnamon content in the tea bag is not strong enough. https://www.instagram.com/p/BxFGI3hgrTz/

What are the advantages and disadvantages of powdered cinnamon tea?

Powdered cinnamon tea has the great advantage that it can be purchased very cheaply, unlike tea bags or loose cinnamon tea. You can even just make it with the cinnamon from your kitchen cupboard and don’t have to buy extra cinnamon tea from the supermarket or online shop.

Advantages
  • Inexpensive
  • Individual dosage possible
  • Intense aroma
Disadvantages
  • Difficult to dissolve in hot water
  • Additional kitchen utensils such as tea strainers and paper filters needed
  • Time-consuming preparation

Like its counterpart in loose format, cinnamon tea in powder form impresses with its ability to be dosed individually. This allows you to adjust its intensity individually to health and taste factors. In addition, cinnamon tea in powder form has been proven to have a more intense aroma than cinnamon tea in sachets.

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate cinnamon teas

In the following section, we will show you which aspects you should consider in order to find the best cinnamon tea for you and which decision-making criteria play a role. The criteria that are important when making a decision mainly include:

  • Tea type
  • Tea property
  • Country of origin
  • Certification
  • Size of packaging

In the coming paragraphs, we will explain to you what is important in each of the criteria.

Type of tea

As already mentioned, cinnamon tea is available in many different varieties in supermarkets or online shops. The large variety of cinnamon teas is particularly highlighted when you consider the types of tea in which the hot, cinnamon beverage can be purchased.

You should be aware that the type of tea can influence not only the taste, but also the amount of caffeine or intensity contained in the tea.

When it comes to teas containing cinnamon, we distinguish between green teas, black teas, fruit teas and herbal teas. The latter are infused with hot water and must then steep for between 5-10 minutes. The first two types of tea should be brewed in low-cal water and should steep for about three minutes so that the cinnamon tea does not take on a bitter note.

Teebeutel

Teas containing cinnamon are available in powder form, in tea bags and as loose cinnamon tea. As you can see in the picture, there are different types of tea that contain cinnamon. These include herbal and fruit teas and the mostly caffeine-containing stimulants: green tea and black tea. (Image source: pixabay.com / Skitterphoto)

Cinnamon-containing herbal and fruit teas consist of plant elements such as leaves, flowers and fruit parts. The variant made from herbs is declared as medicinal tea. Cinnamon-containing herbal and fruit teas usually do not contain caffeine and are therefore also a “wake-up” tea. Black or green cinnamon teas consist of the leaves of the plant, which are either fermented or not fermented. If you do not want fermented leaves in your cinnamon tea, you should opt for green cinnamon tea, which comes into contact with hot steam during production and is then dried, giving it its intense green colour. Black cinnamon tea, as already mentioned, is made from fermented leaves and thus pressed so that the leaves excrete their cell sap, which mixes with air and makes the cinnamon tea last longer and turn black. Cinnamon teas in the green and black varieties usually contain caffeine and are therefore not suitable for children, but they quickly make feelings of tiredness disappear.

Tea property

Just as versatile as the tea varieties of cinnamon tea are its tea properties. Meanwhile, properties of the cinnamon-containing hot beverage range from vegan to vegetarian to organic. Especially if you want to eat a purely plant-based diet or have allergies, the tea properties are an important aspect. As already mentioned, cinnamon teas are also available in blends with other herbs and ingredients. Among these, cinnamon tea with honey extracts is particularly popular among buyers. However, if you have an allergy to it or want to eat a vegan diet, vegan cinnamon teas are an optimal alternative for you. They contain purely plant-based substances and no animal products were used or harm done to the animal kingdom in their production. As a diabetic, you should also choose vegan cinnamon teas, as they do not contain any additional animal sugar such as honey. This way, your blood sugar level is not raised and you keep it under control. Some cinnamon teas also require insects for their production. These cinnamon teas are therefore neither vegan nor vegetarian. Insects such as the cicada Jacobiasca formosana provide the tea leaves with bites that gradually oxidise and give the cinnamon tea a special flavour. Another commercially available tea characteristic in cinnamon teas are organic teas containing cinnamon. Here, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides have been avoided in the production of organic cinnamon teas. You should also choose organic cinnamon tea if fair production factors are important to you. The cultivation of organic cinnamon teas also includes environmentally friendly cultivation and harvesting conditions, so that the cinnamon is grown sustainably, the soil is protected, the groundwater remains uncontaminated and the eco-system is not disturbed as much as possible. When you consume organic tea with cinnamon, you benefit from chemical-free ingredients, fair production conditions and natural flavour intensity.

Country of origin

As already noted, there are many varieties of cinnamon teas, which can contain three different types of cinnamon that come from different countries of origin. As cinnamon can be found especially in the latitudes of South Asia, cinnamon tea is particularly common from areas near the Indian Ocean. Among them, especially cinnamon tea from Sri Lanka and India. However, cinnamon tea often comes from the growing regions of Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Korea, Vietnam and oriental countries. Most of the cinnamon teas from the supermarket are Ceylon cinnamon, which is grown in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Latin America and Madagascar. Another type of cinnamon tea from Indonesia, which grows especially on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is cassia cinnamon. This is often used in coarser pieces for making tea or also finely ground. The third type of cinnamon tea contains Padang cinnamon from southern China or the Indonesian archipelago and tastes coarser, spicier and more bitter than Ceylon cinnamon. Since Ceylon cinnamon, Cassia cinnamon and Padang cinnamon each come from faraway exotic countries, you should be aware that all three types have to be imported for the production of cinnamon teas and long transport routes are involved. These can be expensive and environmentally damaging. Nevertheless, you should not miss out on the cinnamon hot drink as long as you consider it an exotic and scarce luxury good that you should not consume in abundance.

Certification

You can find cinnamon teas with various certifications. The organic seal of approval and the vegan certification are particularly important for many consumers. If you are looking for organic cultivation of cinnamon tea and fair production conditions, you should choose an organic cinnamon tea according to the EC Eco Regulation. The cinnamon and the other ingredients of the hot drink come from organic cultivation. If a cinnamon tea bears the organic seal of quality, you can be sure that no pesticides, herbicides or fungicides were used in the cultivation of the cinnamon. Many cinnamon teas today also carry a vegan certification. These guarantee that there are no animal products in the cinnamon tea of your choice, such as honey, caramel or condensed milk. Vegan-certified cinnamon teas usually bear the seal of the Vegan Society England, the V-Label of the Vegetarierbund Deutschland e. V. or the Vegan-Label of the vegan society Deutschland e. V., which indicate which cinnamon teas are purely plant-based.

Size of the packaging

Cinnamon teas in sachets are usually sold in packs of 20 sachets of 2 grams each. This makes them light and also practical to store, as the pack does not take up much space. In addition, the relatively small number of cinnamon tea portions means that you don’t have to worry about the shelf life of the cinnamon tea, as you will most likely consume it quickly due to its small content volume. However, as mentioned above, cinnamon teas are also sold in very large packaging volumes, especially through online shops. Especially loose cinnamon teas can often be found in packages of up to 5 kg of cinnamon tea. The quantity of cinnamon tea is very important because the longer it is stored, the lower its quality. So if you are a tea lover but consume it in moderation, it is better to buy cinnamon tea in small quantities.

Interesting facts about cinnamon tea

How should I dose cinnamon tea and when should I take it?

Cinnamon tea in sachets is often in very small doses. The sachets often weigh only 2 grams, and the amount of cinnamon in the sachet is even less, as the tea is often also fortified with other fruits and herbs.

The recommended daily dose is no more than one gram of pure cinnamon powder. So you can easily consume 3 cups of cinnamon tea in a bag per day.

However, if you consume 6 grams of cinnamon per day, you should do this for a maximum of 6 weeks and then not consume cinnamon tea for 7 days. This way you can ensure that the coumarin content in your body is not too high and you can avoid negative side effects of cinnamon tea, such as liver and stomach problems and blood clotting disorders.

Why is Ceylon cinnamon tea a better alternative than Cassia cinnamon tea?

Ceylon cinnamon and cassia cinnamon are two different types of cinnamon that can be found in cinnamon tea. As a rule, you should always choose Ceylon cinnamon tea rather than tea containing cassia cinnamon. This is because cassia cinnamon has a higher coumarin content, so that only about 0.02 grams of coumarin per kilogram of cinnamon are detected in Ceylon cinnamon, but more than a hundred times as much in cassia cinnamon.

Zimtstangen

As already mentioned, you can find cinnamon teas in three different types of cinnamon: Padang cinnamon, Ceylon cinnamon and Cassia cinnamon. The cassia cinnamon shown here, with a very smooth structure, contains a very large amount of cumin, which can be harmful to health. So if you want to make cinnamon tea, you should look for Ceylon cinnamon, which has a rather rough and brittle structure. (Image source: unsplash.com / Aditya Joshi)

Especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to pollen and coumarin, you should go for Ceylon tea. Coumarin can cause migraines, headaches and liver problems in large doses and in some cases even increases the risk of cancer. In addition, Ceylon cinnamon is known for its high quality and allows for a variety of health-promoting factors that Cassia cinnamon cannot offer.

How can I store cinnamon tea?

You can store cinnamon tea in a bag without any problems. However, if you decide to make your own cinnamon tea with cinnamon powder, you should be aware that cinnamon powder has a best-before date that you should respect. Cinnamon powder, whether cassia cinnamon or Ceylon cinnamon, has a shelf life of about half a year. You should consume the cinnamon powder within this period, as the quality of the cinnamon decreases and the aroma loses intensity.
