Ceramic pans, besides being beautiful and helping to compose the décor of the lunch and dinner table, are efficient and practical.

These pans work faster than pans made with other manufacturing materials. So much so that they can retain the heat longer and thus speed up cooking.

Let’s suppose that you are cooking rice in a ceramic pan. The ideal is to turn off the cooker a few minutes earlier than usual. After all, as the utensil maintains its internal temperature, the cooking process will continue even when the heat is turned off.

On the other hand, for the unwary, this may cause the food to burn. The fact is that, to make good use of ceramic pans, it is best to cook food over a low heat.

Another advantage of ceramic pans is that they are free of metals that are harmful to health and of PTFE or PFOA, toxic substances generated during heating.

In addition, ceramic pans are versatile since they can be used on any type of cooker, in the microwave oven and in the dishwasher.

However, as much as they are very durable, ceramic pans can break easily. Moreover, as we will see in detail later, not every ceramic pan is made entirely of ceramic.

What is the difference between ceramic and coated pans?

There are two types of ceramic pans: those made 100% of ceramic and those which are only coated with this material.

The first, also called pure ceramic pan, is the one that offers the best heat retention and is therefore ideal to go straight to the table with a hot meal. Moreover, this type of pan is, in fact, non-toxic.

So much so that the pure ceramic pans usually have a certificate of non-toxicity, which ensures that the material does not release toxic compounds that contaminate the food.

Already the ceramic-coated pot usually has this material only on the inside, while the outer part of the utensil is made of aluminum or steel.

In this case, the pan is lighter, cheaper, may be nonstick, but is not always free of heavy metals, harmful to health, and also cannot be taken to the microwave.

Can I use ceramic cookware on any cooker?

As we have seen, ceramic cookware can be used on any cooker, whether gas, electric, oven, microwave, freezer and refrigerator.

You can use ceramic pans to freeze foods that go straight into the oven.

But the same does not apply to ceramic coated pans.

In this case, some are only compatible with gas hobs, while others can be used on electric or induction hobs.

Furthermore, there is no problem in taking the ceramic pan off the cooker and, while still hot, placing it directly on a marble countertop, for example.

When it is time to buy your ceramic pan, the first decision you will need to make is whether to invest in a single pan or a set.

This decision is valid because, in fact, the ceramic pan is more expensive than the others. The ideal is, if possible, to invest in a set. After all, this way, you can guarantee a variety of pots and pans that will be useful in your day-to-day kitchen life.

Generally speaking, you’ll be able to find ceramic pot sets that offer between four and 12 pieces, including there casseroles, frying pans, kettle and grill of different diameters and depths.

However, if you cannot invest in a set, or even if you live alone or cook very little, buying a ceramic pan on its own will also be worthwhile.


Another criterion you should take into account when buying ceramic pans is their weight. Because of the material of manufacture these pans are much heavier. And the fact is that this can end up being a problem to handle it.
