The Best Carpet Sweeper in the United Kingdom: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a Carpet Sweeper

What is a carpet sweeper and who is it for?

A carpet sweeper is a type of broom specially designed for cleaning carpets, although it also does a good job on other floors. With its special bristles, the sweeper picks up dirt and dust from the carpet that even the hoover has difficulty picking up.

Did you know that carpet sweepers have been around since 1876?

The carpet sweeper was developed by the American pottery merchant and inventor Melville R. Bissell and a patent was filed on 19 September 1876. He came up with the idea because he kept having to knock sawdust out of the carpets in his business premises.

It is important that it is easy to use and can be applied quickly. But of course, removing the dirt is also the central role of a carpet sweeper.

Carpet sweepers should not be confused with a hoover or a 2-in-1 device, because the sweeper can neither vacuum nor mop.

Before assembling the carpet sweeper, be sure to read the instruction manual and clean it of dirt regularly, especially after use.

The sweeper is actually suitable for anyone who has at least one carpet in the household. It is much quicker to use than a hoover and cleans the carpet in no time. However, you should not only use the carpet sweeper, but also regularly use the hoover to remove fine dirt, because it is better suited for larger areas.

For example, if you have animals and/or several people in the household, the degree of soiling is much higher than in single households. In this case, the investment is particularly worthwhile.

How does a carpet sweeper work?

Classic carpet sweepers always consist of a handle and have special brushes at the bottom end that pick up the dirt. You move the carpet sweeper over the carpet several times and the brushes rotate, loosening the dirt. The loosened dust collects in the dirt container at the bottom of the sweeper.

Of course, you can also tap the carpet to loosen the dirt and dust, but this takes a lot of time and energy. Furthermore, you must have enough space to spread out the carpet, which should ideally be outdoors.

With the carpet sweeper, you don’t have to move the carpet from the spot and there are no clouds of dust, which can be irritating for allergy sufferers.

Compared to a hoover, the carpet sweeper can be the better alternative for long pile carpets, as the hoover cannot suck up the dirt as well here.

Vacuum cleaner

Fine dust is picked up and large areas can be cleaned faster and more efficiently.

Carpet sweeper

The carpet sweeper is quicker to use and also noiseless. Rough dirt is removed from carpets almost effortlessly.

It usually does not require electricity or a rechargeable battery, which saves money and protects the environment. It is also much cheaper to buy.

Which floors are carpet sweepers suitable for?

Ultimately, a distinction is made between models that only function for carpeted floors and sweepers that are also suitable for all hard floors such as laminate, wooden floors, tiles etc. In most cases, the name of a product already indicates which floors you can clean with it.

If you want to use a model that is only designed for carpet, you should pay attention to the hardness of the bristles. The bristles are usually harder, so they are not recommended for other surfaces. For example, they could damage the laminate.

With softer bristles, such as those used in carpet sweepers for carpets and hard floors, it should be noted that the cleaning of carpets is less thorough in comparison. Such carpet brooms are more suitable if you have alternating cleaning surfaces, e.g. tiles in the bathroom, parquet in the living room, carpet in the bedroom, laminate flooring in the hallway.

However, if you want to focus on thoroughly cleaning one type of floor, choose a carpet sweeper for carpeting, for example. However, make sure that it is not suitable for parquet, as it can scratch the surface.

Can children use a carpet sweeper?

The conventional carpet sweepers are definitely suitable and safe for children. The handle is usually adjustable, so that even the little ones can have fun with it without any problems. The small hand sweepers are also great for children.

You should only be careful with the electric models, as they often come with a charging cable and the child can wrap it around its neck.

What Types of Carpet Sweepers are there and which one is right for you?

The type of carpet sweeper you choose depends on your individual needs.
The type of surface you want to clean and how easy or difficult it is to reach play an important role.

Carpet sweeper with or without elbow joint

In every home there are corners and places that are difficult to reach. Especially under the bed or under the sofa, you can only reach them with difficulty, and the 360° rotating elbow joint can be a great help here.

However, if you don’t need this function, then the more stable version without elbow joint is more worthwhile for you.

  • Easy to reach hard-to-reach areas
  • No bending and less effort
  • Large selection of different types of wood
  • Heavier by weight
  • Lacks stability and is more prone to breakage
  • If used incorrectly, the pole adjusts itself
  • Not suitable for children as difficult to handle

Carpet sweeper with triangular attachment

A triangular shape is better for many corners, especially on stairs a good result is achieved and systematic cleaning is possible. The large sweeping surface allows you to clean large areas in no time.

  • Super for difficult corners
  • Often with battery and suction function
  • Often suitable for different floor types
  • Few products on the market
  • Not available everywhere
  • Customer reviews mostly bad

Hand sweeper

As the name suggests, a hand sweeper is very handy. It removes crumbs from tablecloths, carpets, upholstered furniture, tiles, laminate and parquet. However, it is not suitable for cleaning larger surfaces. It is also effective against coarser dirt such as breakfast crumbs, pet hair and much more.

  • User-friendly for children
  • Lies well in the hand
  • Works without electricity or batteries
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Ideal for the car or camper van
  • Does not take up much space
  • Few products on the market
  • Not available everywhere
  • Customer reviews mostly poor

Electric sweeper

Some carpet sweeper models are equipped with a rechargeable battery, so the amount of power required is much less than with manual sweepers.

Whether you choose an electric or a manual carpet sweeper depends on whether you only use it to clean the carpet or also want to clean other surfaces with it.

  • Saves time and energy
  • Also suitable for other floor types
  • Suitable for larger areas
  • More expensive to buy
  • Uses electricity and needs charging
  • Can break down more quickly, Heavier than manual carpet sweepers
Did you know that the running time of an electronic sweeper is between 20 and 60 minutes?

However, the charging time takes between 4 and 16 hours. So when deciding, you should consider how much and how often you will use your product. The longer your product can perform, the longer it will take to charge.

Buying Criteria: Use these Factors to compare and evaluate Carpet Sweepers

As with almost all products, there are big differences between the price and quality of carpet sweepers, so before buying you should weigh up which functions and features are particularly important to you and what you can do without.

You should consider how often you will use the carpet sweeper and which surfaces you want to clean with it. You should also consider these other factors:

The weight of the models varies significantly. It is important that the carpet sweeper reaches a certain weight so that the necessary pressure is built up on the surface. However, the heavier the carpet sweeper, the more force you have to use to move it.

When buying the carpet sweeper, think about who will be using it. Especially with large carpets that take a lot of time to clean, this can become a real feat of strength.

If you also want to teach a small child the first household chores, then we recommend a lighter product and thus easier handling.

Sweeping width

For use exclusively on carpets, the wider the head, the larger the cleaning area and therefore the faster the cleaning process. More professional products need more space, as the head is often also much wider than usual.

However, if you also want to use the carpet sweeper for other surfaces and sweep up narrow areas, for example, then a smaller head is more appropriate and also advantageous for space reasons.

Now there is also the question of how handy it should be in use. Here, the dimensions, the collection container and the ease of use and assembly are of particular importance.

Think about where you can store the product and how much space you have for it, here the dimensions of the sweeper are important. Most carpet sweepers can be adjusted in height or dismantled, which makes it easier for you to store the product. The height of the handle is also important in that it allows you to reach certain areas without much effort or expense. You may need to apply some pressure when cleaning the floors, so the handle should be stable.

A proper attachment to the base ensures that it does not slip during the cleaning process.

Depending on how often you plan to use the carpet sweeper and how dirty it is likely to get, you should make sure that the collection bin is large enough so that you have to empty it less. Some models do not have a collection container at all, but collect the dirt between the bristles.

In general, a carpet sweeper should be easy to assemble and operate, so that it is not a problem even for children.

The warranty on your product ensures that you can have your carpet sweeper repaired if it breaks down. You should be careful to find a longer warranty on expensive products with a battery. The more features your product has, be it an elbow joint or adjustable brushes, the more likely it is to have a warranty. Most products have a warranty period between one and three years.

If your sweeper breaks or has any problem within the warranty period, e.g. with the battery, handle or collection flap, you can usually have it repaired or replaced free of charge.

Also pay attention to what the manufacturer’s return policy says etc. are. As soon as you receive your product, you should also check all functions (battery life, runtime, functionality, adjustable brushes, elbow joint, etc.).

To ensure that your carpet sweeper is repaired free of charge within the warranty period, make sure you follow the user manual. Normal use is not considered as own fault.

Facts worth knowing about Carpet Sweepers

How should I handle my electric carpet sweeper?

The solution is simple: the secret is the instruction manual. If you read them carefully and follow them, your carpet sweeper will last longer.

Be sure to charge the battery for the time specified in the manual. If you charge your product for too long, you will shorten the effectiveness of the battery and thus the life of your electric sweeper

Another tip is to empty the dirt container after each cleaning operation to avoid the accumulation of dirt and bacteria.

You need to be particularly careful with electric carpet sweepers that have an elbow joint. While these are ideal for reaching difficult surfaces, the joint is particularly delicate and could break if you bend it too quickly or roughly.

What is the best additional way to clean my carpet and what are the home remedies?

Carpets provide cosiness and to keep it that way, you should also take care of the right cleaning.

Regularly cleaning the carpet with a sweeper to remove coarse dirt particles and vacuuming at least twice a month should be the rule.

But that alone is not enough, because stains in particular are stubborn and can often only be removed with expensive cleaners.

With these inexpensive home remedies, you can also get the stains out:

Home remedies Effect

Baking soda

Thanks to the sodium bicarbonate it contains, baking soda is a real miracle cure for all kinds of stains and dirt, and it also removes bad odours.

Simply sprinkle the baking soda on the stain and then work it gently with hot water. This mixture should now soak in for a few hours or overnight. Afterwards, the affected area only needs to be removed from the powder traces.

Salt is considered the ultimate remedy for fresh stains, e.g. red wine on the carpet. Simply apply salt to the stain and let it soak in. The salt absorbs the liquid and then only needs to be vacuumed away.

Lemon juice or vinegar

These have a bleaching effect and should therefore only be used on light-coloured carpets. To do this, simply dab some lemon juice or vinegar on the stain and wipe up carefully with a cloth.

Mineral water

Mineral water is particularly effective on fresh stains. To do this, simply pour the water onto the stain and soak up the dirt dissolved in it with a towel or microfibre cloth.

An alternative cleaner is glass cleaner, which can be used to get even stubborn stains out of the carpet. Simply spray some on the stain, let it dry and then brush it out again. You can also use a carpet sweeper for this.

Another tip is shaving foam, which works and is applied in a similar way to carpet foam. However, it is important that the foam is not coloured and does not contain any additives such as menthol. It is best to test it on an inconspicuous area beforehand. Before applying the foam, the carpet must be thoroughly vacuumed. The shaving cream is then applied to the stain, worked in carefully with a brush and then vacuumed up.

Which carpet is particularly suitable for pet owners?

Pets give us a lot of love and we also want to make them as comfortable as possible. The carpet is a nice oasis for them to rest and play in, but what unfortunately gives us less pleasure are the many pet hairs they leave us in the process. Especially on carpeted floors, they are nerve-wracking and usually difficult to remove.

The carpet sweeper helps immensely, but the type of carpet can also make the job a little easier.

Especially flat-woven carpets, which are made of synthetic fibres, are more durable and at the same time easier to clean, in contrast to carpets made of natural fibres.

Sisal carpets are particularly recommended because they are very durable. They are not only inexpensive and durable, but also beautiful to look at. Their firm structure prevents the claws of the four-legged friends from damaging the carpet.

The rule for pet owners is: the shorter the pile and the fibres, the better.
