What studies have been done on the effects of Brahmi?
Science has already taken a closer look at Brahmi. A study by the Neuropsychology Laboratory of the University of Victoria in 2001 followed a similar research design and found the following. In the double-blind study, one group of healthy adults was given a placebo and the other Brahmi. A neuropsychological examination took place after five and after 12 weeks.
After 12 weeks, the Brahmi group showed a clear improvement in the processing of visual stimuli, the ability to comprehend and learn, and memory. The study also showed that both short-term and long-term memory were positively influenced. (3) Furthermore, the 2008 study of the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland examined the effect of Brahmi on the memory of older people. After 12 weeks, the result was that the overall mental performance of the test subjects improved, which was verified with the help of a learning test. Thus, Brahmi can counteract the natural cognitive ageing process and help against memory loss in older people. (4) In 2014, Indian scientists investigated the efficacy and tolerability of an herbal extract of Brahmi with regard to the symptoms of ADHD children.
The 31 children between 6 and 12 years of age diagnosed with ADHD who were included in the study took one capsule of the herbal substance (225 mg per capsule) daily over a period of six months. Every 15 days, the parents had to come with their children to the treatment centre to check compliance with the therapy and the potential occurrence of side effects.
After six months, the researchers found up to 50 percent reduction in ADHD-typical symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, learning problems and impulsivity in the 27 children available for evaluation. Except for problems in the social sector, the investigated symptoms could be significantly improved by the regular intake of the Brahmi extract. (5)
Another study conducted by the Department of Phamacology of the Banaras Hindu University in 2000 dealt with the connection to stress and investigated to what extent Brahmi can be anxiety-relieving and stress-reducing. The study showed that the plant substance is a so-called adaptogen. Adaptogenic natural substances, by botanical definition, support the body in being resistant to stress by helping to correct the body’s imbalance in homeostasis.
Homeostasis is often thrown out of balance by stress. Broadly speaking, homeostasis of the body refers to various regulatory processes related to body temperature, hormone balance, blood circulation, etc. By botanical definition, adaptogenic herbs have the power to counteract this. Brahmi is one of these herbs. (6)
Can I grow Brahmi myself?
Brahmi is not native to our latitudes, but it can be grown from seed and cultivated quite successfully, as long as the requirements of the Asian marsh plant are taken into account.
Brahmi needs a moist and nutrient-rich soil. It is best grown in a small indoor greenhouse. If you don’t have one, you can help yourself by putting a plastic cover over the plant pot. The seeds are only lightly pressed into the soil but not covered with earth, as they are light germinators. The seeds will develop quite quickly on a warm windowsill.
