The Best Bepanthen Cream: Our Picks

The guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying Bepanthen cream

Are you thinking about buying a Bepanthen cream, but are overwhelmed by the choice and the different offers?

Then you’ve come to the right place, because we explain what you should look out for when buying Bepanthen cream.

Who is Bepanthen cream suitable for?

Bepanthen creams are suitable for everyone – young and old. You can already use the creams on your baby’s sore bottom without any problems.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers also have no reason to worry: the creams do not affect the development of the unborn child or breast milk. Bepanthen creams are therefore a real all-rounder for the whole family.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Bepanthen cream?

Basically, it can be said that Bepanthen cream is not the number one wound and healing ointment in Germany for nothing: the effect is undisputed and very effective. Nevertheless, we have researched the potential advantages and disadvantages of the preparation for you and listed them here:

Advantages
  • Effective wound healing
  • Different pack sizes according to need
  • Different creams for all areas of application
  • Available without a prescription
  • Suitable for all ages
Disadvantages
  • Relatively high price compared to competitors
  • Can cause skin irritation such as contact dermatitis
  • Only available in pharmacies

For which applications is Bepanthen cream suitable?

Depending on which Bepanthen cream you choose, it will of course have different uses. We will explain the characteristics of each cream later in the text.

However, at this point we would like to give you an impression of the complaints for which you can use which cream.

Type of Bepanthen cream Area of application
Bepanthen Wound and Healing Ointment Cracked and dry skin, small wounds, tattoo treatment, nappy dermatitis
Bepanthen Eye and Nose Ointment Sore and dry nasal mucous membrane, stressed conjunctiva and cornea, pollen allergy
Bepanthen Antiseptic Wound Cream abrasions, cuts, lacerations and scratches
Bepanthen Sensiderm Cream eczema, neurodermatitis, red and itchy skin areas
Bepanthen Scar Gel scars

As you can see, Bepanthen cream is very versatile. Not only can it help wounds heal, but it can also beautify scars.

Bepanthen cream for tattoo care

Fresh tattoos are basically wounds that need to heal. At this point, Bepanthen Wound and Healing Ointment can support the regeneration of the skin.

If a dry crust forms on your tattoo and breaks, the tattoo may lose its colour and/or shape.

Therefore, you should take care of the tattoo. This way, the skin is supplied with moisture and the crust does not break.

After the tattoo has been tattooed or lasered, appropriate care – for example, with Bepanthen cream – is essential. (Photo source: 123rf.com / 58212246)

Tattooing and lasering put a lot of stress on your skin. That’s why care afterwards is extremely important.

In addition, aftercare is also of enormous importance for tattoo removal. After all, lasering also creates a wound on your skin and often leads to strong feelings of tension.

You can care for this with Bepanthen cream so that it closes up again and heals.

Bepanthen cream for the genital area

Even though Bepanthen Wound and Healing Ointment is not specifically intended for use in the intimate area, there is nothing to be said against it.

Bepanthen cream can help with fungal infections.

It can be useful to use Bepanthen cream especially for fungal infections of the vagina.

However, as there is a lack of official information from the manufacturer, we advise you to consult your doctor before using it.

However, you should be careful with the antiseptic cream: it should never be used in the vaginal area, as this damages the natural vaginal environment.

Bepanthen cream promotes the tearing of condoms.

In addition, the manufacturer expressly points out that the Bepanthen cream ingredient white vaseline can reduce the tear strength of latex condoms when used in the genital area.

This can therefore pose a potential risk during sexual intercourse.

What active ingredients does Bepanthen Cream contain?

The main active ingredient in Bepanthen Cream is dexpanthenol. Dexpanthenol is an active ingredient from the vitamin group that has a regenerating and moisturising effect.

Bepanthen cream thus supports the natural healing process of the skin.

Dexpanthenol is a vitamin that supports the formation of new skin cells. It helps your skin to repair itself.

In addition, certain Bepanthen creams contain additives such as silicone in the case of the scar gel.

This forms a thin protective film on the scar and protects it from environmental influences.

The antiseptic Bepanthen cream also contains chlorhexidine, which is responsible for the antiseptic and antibacterial effect of this preparation.

What distinguishes Bepanthen cream from other manufacturers?

Bepanthen Creme is the most popular and best-selling wound and healing ointment in Germany. But that is actually also its only unique selling point.

Bepanthen Creme is one of the best-selling medicines in the whole of Germany. Unfortunately, this is also reflected in its price.

Other wound and healing ointments contain the same active ingredients and quantities of active ingredients as Bepanthen Creme. The areas of application also differ only slightly, if at all.

The only difference, but also a big one, is when you look at the prices: Due to its number one position, Bayer can sell its Bepanthen cream at significantly more expensive prices than its competitors.

Can side effects occur when using Bepanthen cream?

In general, no side effects are to be expected when using Bepanthen cream.

However, it can happen that your skin reacts hypersensitively to the preparation and thus causes skin irritations such as contact dermatitis.

If you suffer from diseases of the immune system or of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, or if you are allergic to dexpanthenol, you may experience rashes, redness, itching or blisters when using Bepanthen creams.

It is difficult to determine how often these side effects occur because reporting side effects to Bayer is voluntary, so it is not possible to say for sure whether all patients suffering from side effects have reported their experiences.

However, you can assume that these effects are very rare and that Bepanthen creams are safe to use.

Decision: What types of Bepanthen cream are there and which is the right one for you?

The Bepanthen brand range no longer consists only of the typical wound and healing ointment.

The manufacturer has expanded its range to include several creams, so that the Bepanthen product line offers all-round care for your skin. This includes:

  • Bepanthen Wound and Healing Ointment
  • Bepanthen scar gel
  • Bepanthen Antiseptic Wound Cream
  • Bepanthen Eye and Nose Ointment
  • Bepanthen Sensiderm Cream

To help you find the perfect Bepanthen cream for you, we will go into more detail about the different types in the next section.

We will also explain the advantages and disadvantages of the wound creams to give you a good overview of their properties.

What makes Bepanthen Wound and Healing Ointment special and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Bepanthen Wound and Healing Ointment is not only the classic Bepanthen cream, but also the evergreen among wound and healing ointments and can probably be found in almost every medicine cabinet in Germany.

Advantages
  • Effective wound healing
  • Free of fragrances, colourings and preservatives
  • Exists in four different tube sizes
  • Available without prescription
Disadvantages
  • Unpleasant smell of lanolin
  • Can cause skin irritations such as contact dermatitis
  • Only available in pharmacies

Due to the dexpanthenol it contains, Bepanthen Wound and Healing Ointment supports the regeneration and repair of broken or cracked skin and can therefore be used not only for minor injuries but also for extremely dry skin.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Bepanthen scar gel?

You can use Bepanthen scar gel for existing, older scars as well as for relatively fresh, still reddened scars.

To further enhance the effect of the gel, the bottle contains a massage roller that you can use to massage the scar.

This improves the scar structure in the long term, i.e. it flattens, fades and becomes more inconspicuous overall.

Advantages
  • Relieves itching and tightness
  • Free of fragrance, colouring and preservatives
  • Massage roller activates blood circulation
  • Available without prescription
Disadvantages
  • The extent to which the gel actually helps heal scars is unclear
  • Unsuitable for children under 3 years of age
  • Only available in pharmacies

You have probably also experienced that healing scars can be extremely itchy.

Bepanthen scar gel relieves this too and moisturises the skin so that the feeling of tightness is relieved.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Bepanthen Antiseptic Wound Cream?

Bepanthen Antiseptic Wound Cream is excellent for relatively fresh wounds that have not yet been closed. The cream has an antibacterial and fungicidal effect, i.e. against fungal infections.

Here, too, the active ingredient is dexpanthenol to repair the skin, as well as 5mg chlorhexidine per gram of cream, which is responsible for the antiseptic effect of the cream.

Advantages
  • Antiseptic effect on fresh injuries
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Non-greasy and therefore does not stain clothing
  • Free of fragrances, colourings and preservatives
Disadvantages
  • Not suitable for deep wounds
  • A burning sensation may occur for a short time during discharge
  • Contact with eyes and mucous membranes very painful

As the antiseptic Bepanthen cream also consists of a high proportion of water, it feels pleasantly cool on the skin.

What distinguishes Bepanthen Eye and Nose Ointment and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

Bepanthen Eye and Nose Ointment is, as the name suggests, specially designed for the nose and eyes.

Whether dry mucous membranes, pollen allergies or irritated conjunctiva or cornea on the eye, Bepanthen cream provides moisture and care thanks to the active ingredient dexpanthenol.

However, as our eyes are particularly sensitive, you should not apply a cream that you have used once in the nose to the eye again.

Otherwise, bacteria from your nose could get into your eyes. You should also discard or replace the cream once you have used it on your eye for a week.

Advantages
  • Effective healing and regeneration
  • Free of fragrances, colours and preservatives
  • Very well tolerated, even by sensitive eyes
  • Available without prescription
Disadvantages
  • Unsuitable for contact lens wearers
  • Should only be used on the eye for a short time
  • Exists only in a very small tube size
  • Only available in pharmacies

If you wear contact lenses, this ointment may not be suitable for you. In combination with lenses, it may cause intolerance or irritation.

In addition, the ointment can smear the contact lens, making it difficult for you to see clearly.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Bepanthen Sensiderm cream?

When the natural protective barrier of your skin is disturbed, redness and itching occur.

Bepanthen Sensiderm cream contains lipids that consist of a skin-like structure and thus fit into the skin’s protective barrier.

Advantages
  • Effective restoration of the skin’s protective barrier
  • Free of fragrance, colouring and preservatives
  • Free of cortisone, therefore suitable for young and old
  • Available without prescription
Disadvantages
  • Must not be used on injuries
  • May cause skin irritation under certain circumstances
  • Only available in pharmacies

This rebuilds and strengthens the skin. The effect is also supplemented by care gel lipids.

Bepanthen Sensiderm cream is suitable for mild atopic dermatitis, eczema or very red and itchy skin.

Since it does not contain cortisone, it can already be used on infants. Its use in long-term care or on the face is also unproblematic.

Bepanthen Sensiderm can also be used over a longer period of time without hesitation.

Buying criteria: These factors help you compare and evaluate Bepanthen creams

To help you decide which Bepanthen cream is right for you, we have defined and briefly explained the factors that could be important for the decision as follows:

  • Area of application
  • Package size

You can read about how to interpret and evaluate the individual purchase criteria in the following sections.

Area of application

Depending on your symptoms, a different cream is suitable for you

As you have probably already discovered, there are different Bepanthen creams for different areas of application.

Of course, you should also follow these recommendations and buy the right cream for your symptoms.

Since Bepanthen creams are basically homeopathic medicines, they can be used in most cases without hesitation for children and adults, but also for pregnant women and nursing mothers.

However, if you are unsure, you can always ask your doctor for advice.

Package size

Bepanthen creams come in many different sizes. The tubes start at 3.5 grams – the perfect companion for on the go.

If you prefer a large pack, you can buy tubes containing up to 100 grams of cream.

If you rarely use the cream, a small pack is better.

When buying, always remember that you should not leave the cream open in the medicine cabinet for years.

If you don’t use Bepanthen cream very often, it makes more sense to buy a smaller size.

On the other hand, the price per gram is lower with a larger pack, so you can save money in the long run by buying large tubes.

Facts worth knowing about Bepanthen cream

How do I use Bepanthen cream correctly?

If your doctor does not prescribe anything else, you can use the classic creams as often and as long as you want without risk.

Simply apply a thin layer of cream to your skin and massage it in gently.

To apply Bepanthen cream to your skin, all you need is a pea-sized blob of cream, which you then massage into the injured or dry area. (Picture source: 123rf.com / 111068043)

Be careful with wounds, though: If your injury is bleeding or oozing, wait until the wound secretion or blood has dried. Then you can use the antiseptic Bepanthen cream.

After a few days, the repair process of the skin begins, in which the wound heals and new tissue is formed. Wound and healing ointment can be used here, for example.

Finally, as soon as the scarring begins, you can treat your skin with scar gel to care for and smooth the scar. The scar gel can be applied to the scar for weeks or even months.

What is the shelf life of Bepanthen cream?

Bepanthen creams can be used for up to 3 months after opening. After that, even if you have not used up your cream, you should buy a new tube.

It is best to make a note of the date on the tube whenever you open a new cream.

That way you can see exactly when it was opened and how long it has been in use.

How can I remove Bepanthen cream from my clothes?

Bepanthen contains Vaseline. This makes Bepanthen cream stains on clothing particularly annoying and difficult to remove.

Basically, the removal of stains from Bepanthen cream works like that of ordinary grease stains.

A good remedy here can be dishwashing liquid: Rub the stain with ordinary dishwashing liquid before washing and then put the garment in the washing machine as usual.

Other little helpers like stain pens can also be useful to remove the stain from your clothes.

Be careful with fresh tattoos: what you might think is a Bepanthen cream stain could also be residual ink from the tattoo that got into your clothes.

If this is the case, it is very unlikely that you will be able to wash the stain out again.

Is it possible that I am allergic to Bepanthen cream?

Certain active ingredients can cause an allergy.

You cannot be allergic to Bepanthen cream itself. However, it is possible that certain ingredients, such as dexpanthenol, may cause an allergic reaction.

If you experience any undesirable side effects when using Bepanthen cream, we advise you to discuss the treatment with your doctor and discontinue the product if necessary.

Who is behind the Bepanthen brand?

Bepanthen cream was originally manufactured by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche and was first introduced in Germany in 1950.

In 2004, however, the German chemical giant Bayer AG bought the consumer care division, i.e. the over-the-counter medicines division, for about 2.4 billion euros.

This means that Bayer is now behind the production and distribution of Bepanthen cream as we currently find it in pharmacies.

Where is Bepanthen cream manufactured?

Although the Bepanthen brand changed hands in 2004, it is still manufactured in its home town of Grenzach, near Basel. From there, millions of tubes are exported around the world every year.

In Grenzach, the cream is not only mixed, but also bottled and, of course, checked for impurities and consistency at regular intervals.
