Basil oil based on cooking oil, such as olive oil or rapeseed oil, is mostly used in the kitchen. Basil is added to the vegetable oil in the production process to give it a special flavour.

You will want to retain the many natural minerals and vitamins and the natural taste in your basil oil. This is especially true if you use your oil for cooking or medicinal purposes.

When buying your basil essential oil, look for the designation “naturally pure”.

Filling quantity

If you calculate the cost of basil oil in terms of quantity, essential oil is naturally more expensive than cooking oil.

However, you should bear in mind that just a few drops of the intense essential oil are enough to season a pasta dish, for example, or to give your room a pleasant scent.

With cooking oil, you usually need a little more. If you are not yet sure whether the basil oil really suits your taste, it is advisable to buy a smaller bottle first to try it out.


With basil oil based on edible oil, you should make sure that the oil used is already of a high quality. The production process of the oil is decisive. A distinction is made between cold-pressed (virgin) and hot-pressed (refined) oils.

Virgin or cold-pressed oils

If the ingredients for the oil are pressed out without the addition of heat, we speak of cold-pressed or native oils. Since the extraction is very gentle, important flavours and vitamins are preserved.

Virgin oils are more suitable for refining.

Due to their low heat resistance, it is better to use warm-pressed oils for frying or baking.

Refined or hot-pressed cooking oils

In the production of refined oils, the ingredients are extracted with solvents, which leads to significantly higher yields of the plant.

In order to remove unwanted substances from the oil, it must then be refined with the addition of heat. However, vitamins, aromas and polyunsaturated fatty acids are lost in the process.

Oil blends

High-quality basil oil often consists of a mixture of oils. For example, a mixture of very good quality cold-pressed olive oil and tasteless refined sunflower oil is suitable.

Since virgin olive oil tastes very intense, the basil flavour would be lost if the oil were not blended.

A proportion of refined oil in the basil oil is therefore by no means an indicator of inferior quality, but rather ensures that the basil flavour can fully develop.

Country of origin

The country of origin can also play a role in the selection of your oil. Basil has its origins in India and Egypt.

If you choose an essential oil that was produced in one of these countries, you can usually assume that the quality is right.

High-quality cooking oils such as olive oil often come from Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Spain or Greece. In the case of a basil oil based on cooking oil, for example, these countries can provide information about the quality.

Besides basil, you can also add all kinds of other herbs, spices or even fruits to your oil. How about a basil-lemon oil with a hint of chilli, for example? There are no limits to your imagination.

How can I make basil tea myself?

If you have a basil bush in your kitchen, you can use the leaves not only for cooking or for garnishing your tomato mozarella salad.

Basil leaves and flowers also make a wonderful tea. Take some leaves and flowers, crush them in a mortar or with a knife and put them into a tea bag or tea ball.

Pour hot water over the whole thing and let it steep for about 5 minutes. Your basil tea is ready!
