  • A baseball bat is a piece of sports equipment used in baseball that can be made of wood, aluminium or foam. Each of the materials comes with individual advantages and disadvantages.
  • Baseball bats made of wood are good for perfecting batting technique, but this is a little difficult. Baseball bats made of aluminium are suitable for hobby athletes who only want to hit the baseball occasionally.
  • When buying a baseball bat, you should pay attention to the length and weight of the bat as well as a non-slip grip. You should also assess your skill level to find the right bat for you.

The Best Baseball Bat: Our Choices

Guide: Questions you should ask yourself before buying a baseball bat

What size baseball bat is perfect for me?

Here are two tips to help you get it right:

type of player Characteristics for the right size
child For children, you can place the bat on the ground right next to them.If the bat goes further than your child’s hip, it is probably too long. This will cause problems when swinging the bat.
Adult With an adult, first extend the arm out to the side. Then place one end of the bat on the centre of the chest and the other end horizontally towards the outstretched arm. If the bat fits exactly between the middle of your body and your outstretched fingers, it is the perfect size.

What should my baseball bat weigh?

Baseball bats usually weigh between 800 to 1,000 grams. Where you should go depends partly on your playing experience and partly on your strength. If you are stronger, you can allow yourself to play with heavy bats. We would advise beginners to use light rackets.

The advantage is that you can focus on technique. Instead of trying to swing a heavy bat with all your strength, you will be able to work on your precision. With patience, you will also be able to use the heavier guns one day. They bring more power than the lighter versions.

What kind of wood should my baseball bat be made of?

Each type of wood offers advantages, but also disadvantages when hitting. A harder surface and heavier material mean more power when hitting. However, the heavy weight will reduce your swing speed with the baseball bat. Light bats, on the other hand, swing faster but with less power.

Ash offers high flexibility and is generally stronger than maple. You will rarely see breakage on misses. It is the most robust and lightest wood. This means less power behind your shots.

Maple gives you the perfect hardness of the surface. The material provides the best sound when in contact with the baseball. Due to its hardness, it transmits more power to the baseball than softer woods. Unlike ash, it wears very slowly and is therefore very durable.

It is also the heaviest wood you can choose for baseball bats. So if you are a bit stronger, this bat might suit you. Otherwise, you won’t have enough speed to hit.

Depending on how hard and heavy the wood of the baseball bat is, there are different advantages and disadvantages. Heavier wood gives you more power, but reduces your swing speed. (Image source: / tshide)

Birch wood provides you with the best combination of hardness and flexibility for durability. The hardness is almost similar to maple. This gives you the same sound when hitting. The light weight is better for faster strokes. If you are a beginner and want to try wooden bats, birch is a good choice.

If you’re wondering, do I need to be a professional? Do I have to have a career in baseball? No. Anyone can buy a baseball bat and you can try your hand at it too. Be it just as a hobby or for fun with friends. You have the right to own a baseball bat.

Don’t be afraid. Buying a bat doesn’t mean you have to play every day. You can also play only once a week or even once a month. The condition of the bat will not deteriorate. So decide for yourself when you want to pick it up or put it away.

You are not required to take care of it every day. Put it away directly after the game and only take it out again when you need it. Wipe it once and it’s ready to use again.

How old are baseball bats?

Baseball bats are for everyone. The size of the bat is more important. There are no age restrictions. This means that anyone can purchase and carry a baseball bat.

Do I need a gun licence for baseball bats?

No. The baseball bat is primarily a piece of sports equipment. You can carry it wherever you want without any restrictions. Provided you use it for sport and not for other purposes.

Which is the best bat at the moment?

At the moment the Easton BB17MK Mako is very popular and belongs to the elite rackets. This racket is made up of two pieces. This gives you an extended length that allows you to hit very fast shots, and the aluminium makes this racket very light.

The new technology has put the focus on the sweet spot, it will transfer your full power to the baseball and hit it further than the rest of the bats. So be prepared for the ballholer to run very far.

Decision: What types of baseball bats are there and which one is right for you?

Basically, there are three types of baseball bats you can buy:

  • Baseball bats made of wood
  • Baseball bats made of aluminium
  • Baseball bats made of foam

Do you want to take your skills to the next level? Or do you just want to have fun while playing? The material determines your future in the world of baseball.

Each bat offers you a unique experience on its own. We want to help you find the perfect bat. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player. Whether young or old. After reading this article, you are guaranteed to find the perfect racket. Tailored to your goals. In the following, we will explain the advantages and disadvantages of the material so that you can make absolutely no mistakes when buying.

Wooden baseball bats

Wooden bats are usually made of maple, ash or birch, with maple being the heaviest. On the other hand, the beautiful sound when hitting the baseball is immediately noticeable and will make your baseball player’s heart beat faster.

The bats are very well balanced. In addition, the wood provides a good feeling in your hand. And with the right care, you can use the wooden bat for a long time.

Do you want to improve your batting technique and become a better baseball player? Then the wooden baseball bat is just right for you. You will be asked to do more to be able to hit the base ball further.

But once you have the technique down and hit the baseball almost perfectly the first time, nothing will stand in the way of your baseball career. The feeling of being able to hit the ball far and see it fly will thrill you. After that, it’s just one home run after another.

  • Requires constant improvement
  • Promotes proper swing technique
  • Nice sound
  • Relatively small sweet spot
  • Not beginner friendly
  • More prone to breakage

However, be careful. If you don’t put the necessary time and effort into perfecting your technique, it can be difficult to see the baseball in the air. The reason for this is the relatively small “sweet spot” on the bat: the optimal area on the bat to hit the ball.

So more precision is required from you. But if you are passionate about the sport, the wooden baseball bat will take you to a new level.

Wooden baseball bats have different sounds depending on the type of wood.

Aluminium baseball bat

The aluminium bat is lighter and more suitable for beginners who want to get to know the sport. Not sure if this sport is for you?

Then the aluminium baseball bat might be for you. The lighter weight means you can hit faster. You don’t have to be the strongest to handle this bat.

The material makes for long and very fast balls. The trampoline effect of the aluminium bat transfers all the power to the baseball when it is hit, just like a tennis racket. This in turn means: be careful! Because faster balls mean a higher risk of injury.

  • Relatively large sweet spot
  • Light weight
  • Beginner friendly
  • Not breakable
  • Higher risk of injury

Misses that would break the wooden bat have no effect with the metal. An important point for beginners. Because nobody is error-free at the beginning. This racket shows you understanding and forgives you every mistake. In addition, the large “sweet spot” makes it very easy for you to hit good balls more often.

So do you want to play a little baseball with friends or family without much effort? Or pursue your hobby without much expectation? If the answer is “yes”, then the aluminium baseball bat would suit you. But if you want to see an improvement in your batting technique, you’re better off with the wooden version.

Foam baseball bat

Looking for a baseball bat for your kids? Do you want to introduce them to the world of baseball? Or just keep them busy so you can have some time to yourself? This bat is as harmless as a butterfly.

  • Child-friendly
  • Very soft material
  • Very low risk of injury
  • Nice pastime for children
  • Objects in the house could fall over while playing

The material is so light that even a toddler can swing with it. Who knows. Maybe your child will discover his passion in the sport and start to get enthusiastic about it.

The foam makes it possible for them to get rid of their excess energy. And without causing any damage. Most foam bats are made of a very soft material. They will not succeed in hurting each other while playing.

Even in bad weather, children will be able to play baseball at home. If you take care to put away fragile things, the fun can begin for the children. This bat is almost perfectly designed for your child.

Buying criteria: Use these factors to compare and evaluate baseball bats

Below you will find criteria that are very important when buying a baseball bat. If you don’t consider them, you risk wasting a lot of potential.

Here are the most important factors:

  • Weight
  • Length
  • Non-slip handle
  • Suitable for beginners and advanced players
  • Colour

You should pay special attention to the weight of the baseball bat. Among other things, it influences your success with the batting technique. Heavy bats are more difficult to control. This means that it will take you longer to master the optimal technique if you have to take care of the heavy bat all the time.

Especially as a beginner, you should use lighter clubs. You will not transfer as much power to the ball as with the heavier version. But that doesn’t matter in the beginning. Do you want to become a good baseball player? Then perfect technique is essential for your baseball career.

Did you know that the unofficial baseball anthem “Take me out to the ballgame” was written by Jack Norworth and Albert von Tilzer?

Neither of them has ever seen a baseball game.

Your priority should be to be able to control the bat, like your own body part, and move it wherever you want. And once you have control of your bat, you can finally use the heavy bats.

Now that you have the technique down, it’s time to build up your strength. You will automatically get stronger when you train with heavier weights. Your muscles will adapt. Eventually, even these clubs will seem light to you. The weight that was hard for you to control at first will be easier in your hands after a few weeks or months.

But be careful. You should not increase the weight too quickly. If you increase the weight too quickly with a lean technique, you will make many mistakes with the new club. Therefore, it is important to practice and to master the stroke technique optimally.

Because only with an optimal technique can you continue and work on your strength. Without technique and with a lot of weight, you won’t be able to hit the ball any further.

Young children and beginners should always start with a light bat. However, if you are more advanced, we assume that you have mastered the technique. If this is not the case, you should stay with the light racket and keep practising.

As an adult, you can start with heavier bats. You are already stronger. The heavier bats will have an ideal weight for you. If the bat is too light for you, it will not help you get better.

If the club is too light for you, it will not help you to improve, and swinging too fast can lead to a lack of control in your swing. You will automatically notice if you are struggling to hold the club up or if it is like an extended arm waiting to go into action.

It is always better to be a little lighter than too heavy. Only the perfect weight will allow you to constantly set personal records. The values that were set at top speed because of the weight.

The length of the baseball is also one of the most important factors in your baseball choice. A longer bat gives you more range, for one thing. This means that you have a larger surface area on the bat. It will increase your chance of hitting balls at all.

For example, if you react too slowly when hitting, you may miss the ball with a short bat. In this case, a longer version would have saved you and still hit the baseball.

In addition, not only is the surface itself larger. No. Even the “sweet spot” (the optimal area to hit the ball perfectly) is bigger. This is very helpful if you are a beginner and new to the world of baseball. It will be a good support for you and help you in the beginning.

But that’s just one of many things where the length wouldn’t have made you look bad. The length will also give your club a faster swing speed. You will be able to achieve new best values when hitting the ball. And you owe that all to the extra centimetres.

But you also have to keep in mind that extra length means extra weight. What this means for your hitting quality can be read in the section “Weight”. One thing we can tell you in advance: If the weight is too high, your swing and your hitting technique will deteriorate. Your baseball will not fly far.

Only the best combination of length and weight will give you the best swing. Whether the ball-holers will still like you is another question.

Non-slip grip

The non-slip grip is highly recommended for beginners as well as advanced players. Especially for beginners it is difficult to have a firm grip on the baseball bat. It can slip out of your hand. This could seriously injure not only yourself but also others involved.

The non-slip coating gives you an optimal grip on the bat. This allows you to focus more on hitting instead of trying to hold on to the bat, saving you a lot of trouble.

Did you know that the first baseball championship took place in 1903?

Boston and Pittsburgh played; Boston won 5 to 3

For one thing, you need less strength from your forearms and your arm gets tired much more slowly. Secondly, fatigue affects your body with a longer delay. So your overall endurance on the field is increased.

You don’t want to train your forearms by gripping the bat tightly, you want to play baseball. If you agree with me, the non-slip grip is just right for you. Otherwise, if you don’t have a strong grip, you won’t just see the ball fly.

For those who should actually insist on strengthening their hand (so maybe you too), I would recommend doing so by other means. There are enough small devices that can help you. Do you still want to strengthen it while playing baseball? Then get one without a non-slip grip.

The only danger with a non-slip grip is that when you inevitably switch to a bat without an aid, your grip strength will be lacking. So choose your grip carefully.

Suitable for beginners/advanced players

In this point, we have considered what else is important for beginners. Here we distinguished between rackets for beginners and advanced players. We determined this by the hardness of the material and its robustness.

Beginners are more prone to misses. That’s why we thought that rackets that forgive a lot of mistakes are recommended. You don’t want your racket to break after a few missed swings.

We would not support something like that. So to keep you motivated and to keep you going, we have very robust rackets in the beginners’ category.

You shouldn’t worry at all about the aluminium rackets as a beginner. They don’t break so quickly. In the wooden alternative, we have only selected certain rackets. These will serve you for a while. So you don’t have to be afraid when hitting.

Advanced rackets are a bit more fragile. This does not mean that they are cheaper in quality. They are mostly just wooden rackets. And wood is known to be more fragile than aluminium.

Last but not least, there is the colour of your baseball bat. The choice depends on your personal preference. The colour itself has no advantage or disadvantage. You could stay classic and use the natural colour of the wood.

Nowadays, there are even aluminium bats that look exactly like a wooden bat. So decide here how you want it. The colour does not affect the flow of your game.

Facts worth knowing about baseball bats

What are the biggest baseball teams in the world?

Team MLB Title Stadium
New York Yankees 27 Yankee Stadium
Boston Red Sox 9 Fenway Park
Los Angeles Dodgers 6 Dodger Stadium
Chicago Cubs 3 Wrigley Field
Atlanta Braves 3 Suntrust Park

How do I hold a baseball bat?

First of all, we determine your weak hand. If you are right-handed, right is your strong hand and left is your weak hand. Your lead leg is on the left in this case. Now place the bat vertically on the ground with the handle facing up.

First grasp the handle with your weak hand, placing your little finger at the end of the handle. Then place your strong hand directly over your weak hand and grasp the bat. Make sure that the knuckles of both hands form a line. With this grip you are ready to play baseball.

How long does it take to become a good baseball player?

Like any sport, baseball requires a lot of hard work and energy from you. If you are willing to practice several times a week, your work will show immediately.

To become a good player, you should practice more often than once a week. And by training, we mean going out and practising at least three to four times a week. Ideally, you should have a training partner who throws you the ball.

You can also take turns. This helps you to see the other positions. You can better put yourself in the shoes of other players. Maybe one day it will help you to make the right prediction. It will help you visualise the trajectory of the baseball when someone throws it to you.

But blunt hitting will not make you a good baseball player. If you really want to become a good baseball player and not an average player, you should do special training. A combination of batting and strength training will help you see greater results in a period of one month.

It won’t be anything great, of course. But at least it’s a start. Every professional was once a beginner. So don’t get demotivated if things don’t work out. There will be good days and bad days.

If you stay consistent and keep learning (videos / books / own experience), we promise you visible success. And that in the shortest time. So stay on the ball. You will be surprised what is possible.
